More people are cutting their cord than ever before and Netflix is the main alternative. However, the size of your Netflix library heavily depends on your location. If you’re based in the US, you get 1157 TV series and 4593 movies available for streaming. The number may drop significantly elsewhere (e.g., Russia only has 113 shows and 509 movies on Netflix).

With a VPN, you can watch all the Netflix content blocked in your location.

By connecting through a server in your chosen country, you can unblock Netflix anywhere in the world. This works even in countries where Netflix is prohibited as a service, like in China.

Yet only the best VPN providers can reliably unblock geo-restricted Netflix libraries.

NordVPN is excellent in every area – you will also be able to use it in restricted countries, such as China, with no trouble whatsoever. This VPN has never had issues getting around the Netflix VPN block. We were able to stream content on Netflix using multiple US servers.

Although your internet speed will always be a bit lower with a VPN, NordVPN’s speeds are good enough to stream 4K content without interruptions. The provider doesn’t apply any speed or bandwidth limits to its users.

If you decide to purchase NordVPN, it’s one of the best value options out there with strong security features and an ability to connect 6 devices simultaneously.

Anything you throw at Surfshark VPN, you can be sure that it will do very well. Most importantly for Netflix fans, this service reliably unblocks not only Netflix US, but other libraries as well. Surfshark’s SmartDNS feature (which can be activated via the account settings) is a great feature for streaming because it doesn’t affect connection speeds, which are very fast in any case.

You can also select between the United Kingdom, India, Italy, Norway, Germany, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea libraries to watch region-exclusive titles and get the right subtitles. This is also a great way to watch the content in your preferred language when you’re far from home.

PrivateVPN is rightfully among the best VPNs for Netflix. It offers robust security, fast speeds, and very good features. PrivateVPN won’t try to stop you from torrenting, either, and it’s a decent choice even in countries like China.

If you have a good connection, it’s definitely possible to stream in HD or even UHD (4K), unless you’re connecting to a server on another continent. In addition to Netflix, PrivateVPN will allow you to enjoy BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime content. Kodi users will be pleased as well.

Using PrivateVPN has additional advantages, like a regularly updated list of unblocked servers on their website. So even if some of them get blocked and display the “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy” error, you’ll know which servers are confirmed to work.

This service has over 700 servers across 70+ countries. That should be enough for both streaming and torrenting. What’s more, VyprVPN owns all its servers, meaning they can tune them to maximum performance.

With above-average speeds, you can expect high-quality video regardless of where you live. We advise you to try VyprVPN for yourself, as they have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Private Internet Access (PIA) is among the best providers for Netflix. It has good security credentials and decent speeds that should be enough to stream your favorite shows in high-quality. This service owns more than 36700 servers in over 77 countries – more than enough to provide good coverage for Western users.

PIA is a great Netflix US VPN. What’s more, it can also unblock the Netherlands library. While we didn’t have much luck with other locations, that doesn’t mean that Private Internet Access won’t be able to offer them shortly.

Get PIA to try their service with a 7-day money-back guarantee. It’s very cheap and also allows you ten simultaneous connections per account.

6. Hotspot Shield

135 Mbit/s
  • Catapult Hydra protocol allows faster data transmission
  • Supports all major platforms

If all other options don’t suit you, you can always turn to Hotspot Shield. It doesn’t have top of the line security features but you’ll find plenty of servers and very good speeds. With Hotspot Shield, you should easily be able to watch Netflix in UHD (4K).

While the service has no dedicated apps for Smart TVs, Hotspot Shield can be set up on virtually any other device you may have. This includes Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android platforms. If you want to try out this VPN first, go to the Hotspot Shield website to use full service for a 7-day free trial period.

Sadly, Hotspot Shield doesn’t unlock as many Netflix libraries as some others. For example, the biggest library, Japan, is left out.

For a deeper investigation of Hotspot Shield, read our Hotspot Shield review.

How do Netflix regional restrictions work?

Depending on where you are in the world, you get to see different content on Netflix.

For example, local television networks may have the broadcasting rights to stream certain TV shows, hence preventing Netflix from having the shows on its library in that country.

Also, Netflix acquires distribution rights from copyright owners, which enables the platform to stream that content in certain countries. Therefore, if Netflix doesn’t have the distribution rights to have your favorite TV series in your country’s library, you won’t be able to stream it.

Netflix VPN proxy error

If you get the message: “Whoops, something went wrong. Streaming error. You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy. Please turn off any of these services and try again.” accompanied by the error code m7111-5059, you’ve met the infamous Netflix VPN proxy error.

This usually means that the VPN IP you’re connecting through has been flagged. This might happen when many people use the same server to watch Netflix. It doesn’t mean the service is unusable – changing the server often solves the problem.

Always test to see if you can access the same content on a different device, like your phone or a tablet. If the problem persists, you can always ask the VPN’s customer support – they usually know a few tricks that work.

Are there other VPNs that unblock Netflix?

Netflix isn’t sitting idly, allowing anyone to unblock its libraries. The company’s anti-VPN measures are evolving on a daily basis. Most VPNs cannot afford to spend time looking for new solutions on how to overcome these blocks. As a consequence, even some of the biggest providers reportedly don’t work with Netflix.

The silver lining is that our top 6 VPNs are already ahead of the curb, so it’s easier to keep their unblocking tools prepped in case of a sudden update that makes Netflix unblocking harder.

All the VPNs on this list are decent choices, and all have 30-day or even 45-day money-back guarantees.

There are other aspects you might want to consider before buying. If so, we urge you to read our reviews for these (and other) VPNs. There may also be cases where smaller and lesser-known VPNs may sneak around Netflix’s VPN blocking measures, but it’s hardly worth it to risk subscribing to a provider that might prove to be unreliable in the long term.

How to choose the best VPN for Netflix?

If you’re looking to unblock Netflix, naturally, the best VPN for that is the one that does just that – unblocks Netflix. Hence, the most crucial factor deciding your purchase should fall on the VPN’s ability to bypass Netflix restrictions. However, if you pay for a full-fledged VPN service, you shouldn’t be satisfied with just that:

  • Performance: when you connect to a VPN, your speeds shouldn’t suffer from significant speed drops and lag spikes. What’s the use of unblocked Netflix if the performance is unreliable? Look for high server counts, which usually mean a better ability to manage user traffic and ensure better speeds. Also, check speed test results and test them with your system.
  • Security: look for military-grade encryption, reliable tunneling protocols, a kill switch, and steer clear if a VPN has IPv6/DNS leaks. Protect your privacy not only when you’re unblocking Netflix but when you’re browsing every day.
  • Versatility: VPNs have the potential to perform a plethora of functions. Some do, others merely promise to. Whenever a function is not available, that’s less value for money in our mind.
  • Price: Last but not least, the VPN should offer the promised features for a fair price. You also should be able to get a refund with a money-back guarantee. A free trial is a nice bonus, too.

Does VPN affect Netflix’s streaming speed?

All VPNs direct your traffic through a separate tunnel than it would go through if you were connected directly. Yes, this means that your streaming speed will be affected no matter how good a VPN you’re using is.

For that reason, you should be smart when selecting VPN servers. Always try to pick the closest server geographically that you possibly can. Distance matters and nearby servers may significantly increase your streaming speed.

For example, if you’re living in Spain and want to access American Netflix, better choose a server that is located on the East Coast rather than the West Coast. This simple trick will help you to have better speeds to avoid having to deal with customer support teams to sort these issues out.

Always keep in mind that there are many factors that decide which VPN will give you the best speeds for streaming. All the research in the world will not substitute a simple test that you can do yourself with a free trial that most premium VPNs offer.

VPNs that can’t unblock Netflix:

Big names don’t exactly guarantee VPNs the ability to unblock Netflix. Mind you, this is no easy task as Netflix is continuously improving its anti-VPN measures.

Every day Netflix flags hundreds of IP addresses that get suspended as proxy connections. What it means is users are more likely to encounter the “You seem to be using an unblocker or proxy” error. If you see this error, there’s a good chance that this IP was flagged and this server will be no good when trying to stream. Here are the most popular VPNs that are affected by this:

1. Tunnelbear

TunnelBear is a top-quality VPN that also offers a limited free version, but unfortunately no longer unblocks Netflix. All of its locations, including the US, CA, and UK servers, have been blocked by the streaming giant.

2. IPVanish

IPVanish no longer promotes itself as a Netflix-capable VPN, which means that most (if not all) of its servers are blocked. And our tests show as much. If you’re looking for a VPN that reliably works with Netflix, IPVanish isn’t it.

3. Opera VPN

While Opera VPN has a “VPN” in its name, in reality, it’s just glorified a proxy. Even though you may be able to access a couple of libraries outside your country, getting into the coveted US Netflix server with Opera is not an option.

Do free VPNs unblock Netflix?

Some free VPNs may unblock Netflix. That said, many free VPNs come with additional problems. Here some that may occur if you’re trying to unblock Netflix for free:

  • Most free VPNs collect and sell your data & browsing history to third parties
  • Free VPN services considerably slow down your connection
  • Some free VPNs have a data limit, which is not ideal for streaming
  • Certain free VPNs can inject malware into your device
  • Usually, there’s no customer support to help you out

As you can see, the potential benefits come with potential risks. You might be compromising your streaming quality, your privacy or the security of your device. With that in mind, paying a few dollars a month for a fast, secure, and unlimited premium VPN service no longer seems like such a bad deal.

Netflix VPN FAQ

Is it legal to unblock Netflix with a VPN?

Absolutely. Using a VPN for Netflix won’t get you into any legal trouble whatsover.

However, in their Terms of Service Netflix explains that they: “may restrict your account without compensation or notice if you are engaged in “improper” use”.

It is not completely clear whether using a VPN is considered improper use, but that’s something to be aware of.

Can Netflix detect VPNs?

Yes. In fact, the Netflix VPN detection system seems to be quite advanced and capable of sniffing out the vast majority of VPN services. Even VPNs that can unblock Netflix won’t do so 100% of the time.

How does Netflix know I'm using a VPN?

Netflix uses sophisticated tools to detect whether you are using a VPN.

First of all, they check whether the IP address that you are using is associated with any VPN. That’s why it’s so important to choose a reliable VPN service that constantly updates the IP addresses.

Moreover, Netflix also checks whether your IP address and DNS server match. If they don’t, you don’t get to enjoy your chosen content on this streaming platform.

Does Netflix work in China?

It does if you use a reliable virtual private network or SmartDNS.

As China is widely known for its heavy censorship, opting for a high-quality VPN with SmartDNS feature is the way to go.

Does Netflix ban VPN users?

No. To date, there have been no cases that we know of where Netflix banned anyone just for using a VPN.

For now, the rather annoying Netflix proxy error message is your only slap on the wrist.

Why is Netflix content different in other countries?

According to Netflix, the reason behind that is copyright law, which can significantly vary across different countries. Plus, the rights holders for each particular film can limit the rights to show their product to as many (or as few) countries as they wish. is

This means that Netflix is forced to comply with these requirements, resulting in content differences across its regional libraries, as well as the subsequent Netflix VPN ban.

Which Netflix region has the largest content library?

The first runner in terms of the largest Netflix library constantly changes. Usually, the US, the UK, Canada, and Japan are among the leaders.

As we are writing this article, the UK has the largest content library with 4130 movies and 2084 series.

Unsurprisingly, the fact that Netflix is based in the US means that Americans have access to one of the largest and most sought-after content library that includes 3949 movies and 1957 series.

For a fuller comparison of the different Netflix content libraries, be sure to check out our in-depth guide to beating the Netflix VPN ban.

How to watch American Netflix in the UK?

To watch American Netflix in the UK, you need to get a reliable virtual private network. With it, you’ll be able to connect to the server in the US that will allow you to stream to your liking.

When choosing the best server to stream American Netflix, go to your NordVPN app, type United States and #. You’ll see the whole US servers list and the one with the highest number should be your go-to choice.

Also, after choosing a server check its IP address online to see how far is it from you. Generally, the closer the server is, the better.

The higher the number, the more likely it will work for American Netflix, as servers with the highest numbers are the newest ones.

How to watch Japanese Netflix?

The key selling point of Japanese Netflix is the variety of Anime content it offers. Moreover, the number of libraries that Japanese Netflix offers is one of the biggest on the market today.

To stream Netflix Japan, a VPN is what you need. With it, you’ll be able to connect to Japan, and access all Netflix has to offer in this country.

Just like with the US Netflix, to find the best NordVPN server for Japan, go to your app, type Japan and #, and pick the server with the highest number. Afterward, check online how close is it to get the best streaming experience.

Is there a difference between the Netflix app and Netflix in a web browser?

Theoretically, yes. Some VPNs that can unblock Netflix in your web browser won’t be able to do the same for the Netflix app installed on other devices like smartphones, tablets, or smart TVs.

This is because the Netflix app can force DNS requests to be sent to public DNS name servers. This can alert Netflix that you’re not using your actual IP address and are trying to fool the streaming company with a proxy or VPN.

That said, all of the top VPNs we listed in this guide have no issues with unblocking Netflix both in the dedicated app and your web browser.

How to unblock Netflix with a VPN on devices that don’t support VPN?

The easiest way to do that is by setting your VPN on a router, or purchasing a router that has been pre-configured already.

Doing so will allow you to stream Netflix on devices such as smart TVs, Roku, Apple TV, or even XBox.

Can I use Netflix abroad?

Of course, you can. Keep in mind that you may notice that the available content choices have changed. You will be informed about the limited period of time when you will still be able to watch all the content from your home country.

However, after the end of that period, you’ll only have access to the TV shows and movies for the country you’re currently residing in. Afterward, to access the content you will need a VPN.

How much does Netflix cost per month?

Netflix subscription prices vary depending on where you are in the world.

You can save the most by purchasing the Netflix subscription from South AmericaBrazil and Colombia, specifically.

To see, how Netflix prices differ around the globe, check our recent research.

How do I change my region on Netflix?

The easiest way to do that without flying all the way to the USA is to change it with a VPN. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Download your chosen VPN
  2. Connect to a server in a chosen region
  3. Check if your IP has changed to your chosen region
  4. Go to the Netflix website and log in

After going through all these steps, you’ll be able to stream Netflix completely unrestricted.

How do I change my Netflix country without VPN?

You can do that by purchasing a smart DNS proxy that will help you access the geo-blocked content.

Smart DNS Proxy’s servers are protected with encryption, hence you remain secure while streaming.

since the corona pandemic there is nothing better to do than watch netflix to be honest. so it’s time to get a vpn. i’m from uk, and really want to watch other libriaries. your article really helped me to understand a little more about vpns, and which provider to get.

  5. Randy Stanard

Netflix DOES block Surfshark. I like the VPN, but both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video blocks access using this VPN service.

    1. Ethan Payne

      Hi Randy,

This is literally the first US server I tried. Have you tried changing servers/protocols?Surfshark VPN US server working with Netflix

  6. strongvpn

Does StrongVPN work well with Netflix? Does it unblock Netflix US? Or is it not that good to do this?

  7. Roman

While I understand Netflix needs to fight this in some way because of copyright issues, they shouldn’t fight it too hard and risk losing users. The list of VPNs that work is getting smaller and I can attest that ProtonVPN or PIA are not working.

  8. Manda 90

Netflix has many of my favorite series geo-blocked. I’m looking for the best VPN to unblock my streaming service. I’ve tried some but I’m kind of frustrated with the slow speeds and dodgy security features.

I really need to get this working. I’ve heard good things about NordVPN. Is it worth the price?

    1. avatar
      Ethan Payne Author

Absolutely! Not only does NordVPN unblock Netflix (which has become very adept at blocking other VPNs), it’s the best at working with pretty much any streaming platform out there. That’s why we consider NordVPN as the best VPN for Netflix, after all.

  9. Robert

All the VPNs here can work well for Netflix and I would also add VPN Unlimited. I’ve tried it and it works fine. I’ve also tried NordVPN and PrivateVPN and both unblock Netflix but if you also need a VPN for many other things like torrenting or need a more secure option, then Nord is better.

  10. Hugh P

I’ve been using ProtonVPN for a few month now and it’s working perfectly with Netflix. (I only tried it on my Mac so I don’t know about any other device). Before I had tried Avast and PIA, and honestly ProtonVPN is way better.

  11. Nathaniel

Been looking for how to unblock netflix and so glad I bumped on this article. Purchased Nord on the first list and it’s really intuitive, compact, nice-looking, and most importantly – the strong vpn gets the job done. Big thanks to the developers, this is very helpful!

  12. Yandarbi77

Netflix is very picky about what they share with their viewers. Some programs like HBOs GOT is not available on Netflix due to piracy issues. However, GOT writers will now be joining Netflix due to the unfavorable response they have received after Season 8. Viewers will need to get a good VPN provider to access Netflix, like StrongVPN.

  13. jinj

If you want Netflix to work well I have 2 solutions: ExpressVPN which works great and VPN Unlimited. Tested both and they work very well; didn’t have any issues with either until now.

  14. Airel76

Been using CyberGhost before I shift to NordVPN to solve all my VPN-related needs! It has unblocked netflix in no time. No Netflix no life! Thanks NordVPN

  15. Lora

My stepsister is a Netflix fan However a few months ago she had A problem with Netflix blockage in her location however she managed to solve her problem with Windscribe VPN application and browser extension.

  16. Keegan

PrivateVPN has worked for me perfectly for almost a year now. The only technical issue I have is the battery drain, but I think this is expected considering that it needs to encrypt and decrypt literally every bit of network traffic you go through which is taxing on processing power. Overall it’s a very strongvpn for streaming Netflix and accessing other restricted content online
