Canada is known as one of the most liberal countries in the world. However, recent developments have revealed worrying trends towards the invasion of privacy and a widespread loss of online security. Much of this comes down to Canada’s position in the Five Eyes alliance. Canada’s involvement in this alliance should really be enough to make everyone concerned about their data privacy.

There is, however, one way to safely ensure your private data remains private, and that is to use a VPN. VPNs allow you to connect to an IP address other than your own—often in another country—and encrypt this connection to ensure you cannot be traced. This doesn’t only protect you from the government: it also protects you from hackers. Quebecois gamblers can rejoice, too, because a VPN allows you to circumvent censorship of outlawed material.

Which VPNs are the best, though? Let’s find out.

Best VPNs for Canada

1. Surfshark VPN

  • Location: British Virgin Islands
  • Pricing: starts at $3.49/month (or $1.99 from affiliates)
  • Features: great security, geo-unblocking, torrent support, download speeds

If this is the first you’re hearing about Surfshark VPN, we wouldn’t be surprised. It’s a relative newcomer to the world of VPN, and it’s shaping up to be one of the best once it becomes fully developed and fool-proof.

Surfshark provides excellent download speeds, which makes it great for torrenting. It’s also reasonably good at unlocking geo-restricted content such as Netflix and Hulu. That and lots of other great features brings Surfshark onto our best VPN for Canada list.

2. NordVPN

  • Location: Panama
  • Pricing: starts at $3.49/month
  • Features: great security, server list, geo-unblocking, support

Though NordVPN doesn’t quite have the advantages of Astrill for users seeking the best VPN for Canada, that doesn’t prevent it from being a top-drawer VPN in its own right. Indeed, Nord has enjoyed a considerable reputation for quite some time, and we don’t see that ending any time soon.

Its enormous fleet of servers (5200+ in 60+ countries) means Nord has the capability to unlock just about any geo-restricted content. With a plethora of servers in Canada itself, it can do this fast. Most importantly, though, with NASA-grade encryption ciphers on hand, it can do this securely!

One advantage it does have is its price. At less than three dollars per month for a three-year plan, Nord is certainly one of the most affordable VPN services on the market today. Given the features we’ve just mentioned, you certainly get your money’s worth with NordVPN.

3. ExpressVPN

  • Location: British Virgin Islands
  • Pricing: starts at $8.32/month
  • Features: great security, accessibility, geo-unblocking, torrenting

ExpressVPN has arguably built up the most formidable reputation of any VPN over its nine years in business. This is partially why it’s one of the most expensive; as with many recognizable brands, you have to pay extra for something you know is trustworthy.

That’s not all, though. While it doesn’t have the advanced download speeds of Astrill, Express remains one of the most high-quality VPN on the market today.

There’s no stopping ExpressVPN once it’s in action. A top-tier encryption cipher combined with a reliable kill switch and a private DNS server makes for a real tough cookie. Better yet, Express has you covered when it comes to the best protocols, as it allows the option to use OpenVPN (optimal for desktop security) and IKEv2 (optimal for mobile security).

4. VyprVPN

  • Location: Switzerland
  • Pricing: starts at $5.00/month
  • Features: great security, server list, geo-unblocking, torrenting, download speeds

VyprVPN is another VPN that fits all of our criteria:

  • registered outside of the 5/9/14 Eyes (Switzerland);
  • a good balance of pricing and features (more on this in a moment);
  • and security and privacy protection that is practically invulnerable.

Like our top picks, VyprVPN uses military-grade security—AES-256-bit encryption, a kill switch, and private DNS servers among other assets. Its mid-range price is entirely appropriate given its ability to appeal to fans of streaming and torrenting. As well as being able to unlock geo-restricted content anywhere, VyprVPN also comes equipped with Golden Frog’s custom Chameleon protocol. What is this? Basically, it’s designed to bypass firewalls and may be useful against speed throttling.

5. Astrill VPN

  • Location: Seychelles
  • Pricing: starts at $8.33/month
  • Features: great security, server list, torrenting, download speeds, support

Citizens of the Western nations face the greatest risk of prosecution for torrenting, so this is certainly a major consideration when it comes to finding the best VPN for Canada. Fortunately, Astrill VPN has you covered: Astrill is almost custom designed for fans of torrenting—and provides great tunneling protocols and ample download speeds for good measure!

Residents of Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northern Territories can rejoice at this news because the internet connection speeds in those areas are notoriously slow. Astrill is designed to ensure your data is properly secured with as little hindrance to your user experience as possible. Indeed, as one of the fastest VPN services on the market today, it’s difficult to find a match when it comes to securing data in Northern Canada.

Yes, it’s slightly expensive. For $8.33 per month, though, you’re paying for a considerable piece of software. AES-256-bit encryption, a zero-log policy, and OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols are surefire ways of ensuring your data stays private, and the strength of these components means there’s no limit on how long you can retain your security.

6. TorGuard

TorGuard service logo
  • Location: USA
  • Pricing: starts at $4.99/month
  • Features: great speeds, security, geo-unblocking, torrent support

An American VPN doesn’t exactly fit our criteria for the best VPN for Canada, especially seeing as the US is also part of the Five Eyes alliance. However, we feel there’s some value in TorGuard, and that’s why we’ve included it here.

As the name suggests, it’s a perfect VPN for torrenting. Its enormous fleet of servers is great for ensuring high-speed connections, and its collection of protocols includes all the essentials (OpenVPN, IKEv2, and Stealth VPN in particular). This makes its mid-range starting price, $4.99 per month, actually pretty reasonable.

The only other issue is TorGuard’s email provider: Gmail. In the right (or wrong) situation, this can mean a compromise of your data privacy. It’d require a whole lot of bad luck for that to happen, of course, but it’s worth noting either way.

Overall, while it clearly isn’t the best VPN for Canada, we have a soft spot for TorGuard, and it’s definitely worth considering if your main gig includes torrenting.

7. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN service logo
  • Location: Sweden
  • Pricing: starts at $3.82/month
  • Features: great speeds, security, geo-unblocking, torrent support

Once again, we’re breaking the golden rule of including a VPN registered in one of the 5/9/14 Eyes. This time, it’s Sweden, the country that has managed to shut down everyone’s favorite torrenting site, The Pirate Bay (for a few days, anyway). Why would we do this?

Well, for one thing, PrivateVPN has a no-logs policy, which means that even if the Fourteen Eyes managed to get hold of your data, there’d be nothing for them to actually see.

As well as this, PrivateVPN is impressively speedy for such a lightweight VPN. With only a small fleet of servers, the company behind it had the foresight to purchase internet capacity straight from the IP transit provider. Amazingly, PrivateVPN remains pretty cheap, too!

All in all, then, this is a lightweight, lightly budgeted version of Astrill that rounds up our list of the best VPN for Canada in reasonably good standing.
