Chile is well-known for its digital freedom, at least compared to nations like Russia, China, or even the USA. But there are still plenty of great reasons to use a Virtual Private Network, whether you’re in Santiago or Valparaiso.
However, as you’ll find out the hard way if you opt for low-cost free services, not all VPNs are equal. That’s why we’ve put together our listing of the best providers Chile has to offer. With our help, you can ensure total privacy and security for whatever you do online.
Reasons to use a VPN in Chile
Why would we compile a list of the best VPN for Chile? Well, actually there are plenty of excellent reasons to invest in the protection that high-quality Virtual Private Networks provide.
Firstly, you can use them to unblock services like Netflix which are subject to “geo-blocks.” This opens up a much wider range of entertainment products to Chilean users. And, on a related note, you can also work around geo-filters used by retailers to segment their markets. This can help you find much cheaper airfares, for example.
Then there’s privacy. While Chile has a pretty good record on censorship and surveillance, the Agencia Nacional de Inteligencia and other bodies have broad powers to watch citizens. And you may also want to hide browsing habits or P2P downloads from corporations and law enforcement bodies. Virtual Private Networks are a great way to do so.
What makes the best VPN for Chile? How our rating system works
When we rate VPNs, several key factors come into play. We tend to consider all of them equally, then come up with a rating for each provider. And our choice for the country’s finest provider is the company with the highest overall score.
Here are our key criteria:
- Security – the foundation of any good Virtual Private Network, security should include kill switches, DNS leak protection, and rock solid, up to date encryption.
- Privacy – we don’t tolerate any weaknesses when it comes to IP anonymization, meaning providers in the so-called “14 Eyes” network of countries are also generally excluded. We favor companies that accept crypto payments, and a strict no logging policy is non-negotiable.
- Speed – Chilean web users demand high speeds for streaming video, communicating, and downloading files, and only the best Virtual Private Networks can be relied upon. Wide server networks really help out here.
- Price – Being cheap isn’t necessarily good when it comes to VPNs, but it helps. Plenty of leading providers are also very good value, so the price has to be a consideration.
- Flexibility – Providers should offer clients for all major platforms, as well as multiple simultaneous connections. If not, it’s a minus point.
Hopefully that clears up our methodology. So let’s move onto the best VPN for Chile, via some of the leading competitors.
Our list of Chile’s leading Virtual Private Networks
1. ExpressVPN ‣
Location: British Virgin Islands
Pricing: $8.32 for 1 year
Features: Crypto payments accepted, high speeds, 3 simultaneous devices, 256-bit encryption, excellent Netflix performances, 30-day money-back guarantee, P2P friendly, 2000 servers in 148 locations (including Chile)
Often ranked number one on the global VPN scene, ExpressVPN misses out by a whisker in our search for the best VPN for Chile. However, it’s still a superb product and should offer everything Chilean users need.
ExpressVPN scores well in terms of speed, thanks to its massive global server network, which handily includes locations in Chile. Coupled with excellent Netflix unblocking capabilities and P2P support, and this is the ideal product for entertainment lovers.
Security is right up there, thanks to 256-bit AES encryption and a wide protocol selection, including OpenVPN. Cryptocurrency payments are accepted, which is good for anonymity. And the ExpressVPN app is very simple to use, with versions for all popular devices.
So why did ExpressVPN lose out? Well, it’s not the cheapest provider. And it only offers 3 simultaneous device connections, which makes it less useful for families.
2. CyberGhost ‣
Pricing: $5.99 for 1 year
Features: 256-bit AES encryption, kill switch, 45-day money-back guarantee, 3000+ servers across the world, a wide range of apps, 7 simultaneous devices, IP and DNS leak protection, no logs policy, chat, and email support
Romania’s CyberGhost is almost as slick and effective as the best VPN for Chile but doesn’t quite make it. On the plus side, this Virtual Private Network is very affordable – and may well be the cheapest of all elite options.
But it doesn’t sacrifice much to achieve this level of value. Speeds are good, and security is as it should be: 256 bit AES encryption, DNS leak protection, IP anonymization, and a kill switch to provide extra insurance.
Being able to hook up 7 devices at one time is a real benefit, which makes CyberGhost great for families and larger households. And you can install it on computers, smartphones, or smart devices – providing all-around protection.
Even better, this is a true “try before you buy” VPN. The 45-day money back guarantee allows you to delve into the provider’s features, and see whether it delivers on an extended basis. If not, you can look elsewhere.
So what’s the issue with CyberGhost? Well, there have been some allegations about its parent company being associated with malware and adware injection, but these, so far, are just allegations. And support isn’t quite at the standard we expect. So there are reasons to look at other providers before giving it a try.
3. NordVPN ‣
Pricing: $6.99 month for 1 year ($3.49/month)
Features: High-level AES encryption, P2P support, reliable Netflix unblocking, 5230 servers in 62 countries (7 in Chile), supports TOR, no logs policy, kill switch, CyberSec included, 6 simultaneous devices, crypto payments supported
NordVPN is usually bracketed with ExpressVPN as one of the “big two”, and it’s definitely a solid option for Chilean users. Speed is ensured by a massive server network featuring 5230 locations, including 7 in Chile. And this combines with the best record in the industry for unblocking Netflix. So if you love streaming movies and TV, NordVPN won’t let you down.
Security-wise, NordVPN has no apparent flaws. Encryption is as good as can be, with 256-bit AES ciphers, the logging policy is watertight, and there’s a kill switch that cuts out your internet connection of the Virtual Private Network drops. And being in Panama, the 14-eyes network isn’t an issue.
Then there are extras bundled in with NordVPN. Its unique CyberSec security suite beefs up protection beyond what’s offered with other providers, providing an efficient malware shield. And you can run TOR through the VPN as well.
So where does NordVPN fall down? There aren’t many flaws, but speeds can fluctuate slightly, and we thought that the best VPN for Chile slightly outperformed NordVPN in terms of ease of use as well.
4. BulletVPN ‣
Pricing: $7.49 month for 1 year ($3.75 with discounts)
Features: 30-day money-back guarantee, no bandwidth limits, zero logs, apps for all major platforms, a wide range of protocols, crypto payments possible
Based in Estonia, BulletVPN is outside the 14-eyes, so scores high right from the outset, and it backs this up with very impressive features across the board. In terms of security, there’s little to criticize. 256-but encryption, OpenVPN or IKEv2 protocols deliver total security, and DNS leaks are not a factor.
Privacy is also enhanced by the ability to sign up using cryptocurrencies, which we appreciated, and you won’t need to worry about hitting bandwidth limits. So torrenting and streaming should be hassle-free.
Speeds can be very competitive. However, a small server network stretching across 22 countries means that this isn’t actually a strong point of BulletVPN (and there are no locations in or near Chile). So while it’s not a slow service by any means, there may be some delays and lag while streaming.
Then again, BulletVPN has an excellent record with Netflix or BBC iPlayer unblocking, so accessing the platforms you love should be easy. But the slight speed issues we detected mean that BulletVPN can’t qualify as the best VPN for Chile.
Pricing: $9.99 month for 1 year
Features: multi-hop servers, no third party involvement, unlimited connections, no logs policy, TrackStop malware filter, excellent encryption, 7 days guarantee
Aimed at businesses and high-end users, Perfect Privacy is a Swiss provider which lives up to its name. The encryption and protocols on offer here are top of the line, but Perfect Privacy goes further. Its TrackStop feature halts malware and adware in its tracks, NeuroRouting optimizes speeds, while StealthVPN technology means that users can mask the fact that they are using a VPN at all.
Everything here has been designed to deliver anonymity and privacy – which includes in-depth customer support for all subscribers. But this does come at a cost. Perfect Privacy is far from the cheapest provider on this list. Still, we thought that it had to be mentioned because it meets needs that other Virtual Private Networks don’t.
And we should also mention bonuses like unlimited device connections – something which small businesses could really benefit from.
6. VPNArea ‣
Pricing: $4.92 month for 1 year
Features: Netflix unblocking, 24/7 support, high-end encryption, adblocking included, pay via cryptocurrencies, servers in 70 countries, 6 simultaneous devices, supports IKEv2 and OpenVPN, no logs
VPNArea is a great, but less well-known Virtual Private Network from Bulgaria (which is outside the 14 Eyes). And although it’s not our pick for the best VPN for Chile, it comes really close.
There are plenty of things to like here. 256 bit AES encryption combines with support for IKEv2 and OpenVPN to offer a very high level of security, while the no logging policy seems pretty watertight.
Speeds are very good on the company’s server network, which reaches across the globe, including locations in Latin America. You can sign up anonymously via cryptocurrencies like BitCoin, while a handy adblocker comes as part of the client.
There’s also a capacity to connect 6 devices at one time, which should suit families perfectly. And the prices are very low. So where are the downsides here?
Well, the only major issue regards geo-blocks. While VPNArea often works around Netflix geo-blocks, it’s not the most reliable provider, and not all of its servers are dedicated to streaming. So you may experience slightly stodgy speeds.
And the best VPN for Chile is… Astrill VPN
Pricing: $8.33 month for 1 year
Features: 24/7 support, all major protocols including OpenVPN, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited devices, servers in over 50 countries (including in Latin America), apps for smartphones, laptops and routers, no third-party software, smart mode to enhance browsing speeds
Slow speeds for Netflix aren’t an issue with our choice for the best VPN for Chile: Astrill VPN. As you’ll see from the feature list above, this is one serious contender, covering a huge range of points that really make a difference to the user’s experience.
Security is predictably very good, with 256-bit encryption and a wide variety of cutting-edge protocols. You can run TOR over Astrill VPN for extra privacy, and multihop services are also part of the deal.
As with Perfect Privacy, you can connect as many devices as you like, and speeds are blisteringly fast. But if you need even smoother browsing, you can turn on Smart Mode, to turn off local privacy controls.
In fact, the filters included with the client provide a unique level of flexibility. In a country like Chile, where local surveillance and censorship is less important than accessing certain web services, being able to concentrate on individual sites is really useful. That’s why we love Astrill VPN so much, and we think you will too.
