Virtual Private Networks are an essential tool for German web users. Whether you want to access Netflix content that’s only available to American viewers, book flights for less via multinational travel sites, secure your torrenting, or encrypt your web browsing traffic to beat surveillance agencies, these tools are becoming indispensable.

However, nobody wants to be stuck with a privacy tool that doesn’t work – and plenty don’t. To help you find the right service, we’ve researched the best VPN for Germany and come up with a list of providers based on the following criteria:

  • Privacy – we were interested in providers that are based in countries guaranteeing strong privacy (outside the 14 Eyes, no data retention laws, etc.).
  • Security – only providers offering strong encryption and the strongest protocols made our list.
  • Speed and servers – we looked for providers with plenty of servers and lightning-fast speeds.
  • Value – when picking a Virtual Private Network, it’s not all about price. However, some providers offer amazing services at very reasonable prices. Those are the ones we look for.
  • Flexibility – we love providers who allow users to connect multiple devices, change protocols, and choose the right configuration for their needs.
  • Support – only providers who look after their customers make our list.

  • Unbeatable in terms of security and privacy
  • NordLynx protocol for the best speeds without sacrificing security
  • Excellent for both streaming and torrenting
  • No router app

Often rated number one among global Virtual Private Networks, NordVPN will certainly be found on the list of best services for Germany. This provider deserves its elite status among privacy companies, offering rock-solid 256-bit AES encryption and a strict no-logging stance. DNS leaks aren’t a factor, and the kill switch provides welcome reassurance.

Thanks to a network of over 5,000 servers in 62 countries (including 263 in Germany alone), speeds are very competitive, albeit not the very best. The network allows P2P, which will be appreciated by TV, film, and music fans. Moreover, few Virtual Private Networks are as successful when it comes to unblocking Netflix. So streaming fans will be delighted with their purchase.

As for flaws, well, let’s just say there aren’t many.

2. IPVanish

Number of servers: 1500
Number of locations
Number of locations: 75
  • P2P supported
  • SOCKS5 proxies included
  • 10 simultaneous connections
  • No anonymous payment options

Normally, we wouldn’t highlight US-based Virtual Private Networks, but in the case of IPVanish it’s hard to ignore. Keep in mind that the company’s American location could lead to privacy issues. However, when you take other factors into account, IPVanish is a very strong contender.

IPVanish enables users to connect a massive 10 devices to their Virtual Private Network at one time. This makes it feasible for small businesses as well as student households. And when you look at the mechanics of the service, everything is in the right place. There are apps for major platforms, great encryption, speeds, Netflix capability, and even SOCKS5 P2P support.

3. Surfshark VPN

Number of servers: 1700
Number of locations
Number of locations: 60
  • Commitment to privacy and security
  • Speedy connection for streaming
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Weak self-help support section

Surfshark is a lightweight VPN service that is already giving some of its top-rated competitors a run for their money. It has a huge feature set for an extremely low price.

The network Surfshark operates already has 1700+ servers in 60+ countries and is constantly expanding. Their speeds are consistent and put pricier competitors with larger server pools to shame.

This service even measures up to its rivals when it comes to cybersecurity too. DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak protection – if you can name it, Surfshark probably has it. Plus, if something doesn’t work, customer support is available 24/7 via live chat.

4. VyprVPN

Company location
Company location: Switzerland
Number of servers
Number of servers: 700
Number of locations
Number of locations: 70
  • No bandwidth limits
  • Self-managed servers,
  • P2P allowed
  • No anonymous payments

Based in Switzerland, VyprVPN is a product of Golden Frog, and performs very well for German privacy fans. As Switzerland is outside the 14 eyes network, it makes a great locally-based option for Europeans who don’t trust their governments to respect their privacy.

This is a very high-end service. For example, VyprVPN owns and maintains all of its hardware across the world, with no third party involvement. The company has also introduced specific tools to combat ISP throttling, which is becoming a big problem for users around the world. And their app is easy on the eye, with versions for all major platforms.

Speeds measure up, while a reasonably large server network should help users work around geo-blocking. But there are some negatives to mention. For instance, VyprVPN doesn’t support truly anonymous payments via cryptocurrencies. And while the servers allow P2P traffic, the company has publicly expressed an anti-piracy stance that might trouble some users. Despite this, VyprVPN is a very solid option.

5. PureVPN

Company location
Company location: Hong Kong
Number of servers
Number of servers: 2000
Number of locations
Number of locations: 140
  • Split tunneling feature
  • Port forwarding
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Weak kill switch

PureVPN is another provider we think could be a contender for the best VPN for Germany. Why? Well, for starters PureVPN’s security features are right up there. 256-bit AES encryption, WebRTC leak protection, IPv6 protection, total IP anonymity, and excellent DNS leak protection adds up to a strong barrier against snoopers.

Flexibility is another strong point. You can install PureVPN on games consoles easily, as well as routers, phones, Smart TVs and computers. And when you do, you’ll find that geo-blockers have very little power to stop you. PureVPN is a reliable way to access Netflix wherever you are, while it also has good P2P support.

However, the Hong Kong/China location is a worry, some users have experienced difficulties with PureVPN’s software, and speeds vary considerably. It’s the kind of provider that has an army of fans and plenty of critics. So try for yourself via the 3-day free trial to see if it’s your kind of thing.

6. CyberGhost

Company location
Company location: Romania
Number of servers
Number of servers: 6300
Number of locations
Number of locations: 90
  • 7 simultaneous connections
  • Efficient adblocking
  • Up to 45-day money-back guarantee
  • macOS and iOS apps have less features

Based in Romania, CyberGhost is another elite Virtual Private Network for Germany. But it’s still an excellent choice, for a number of reasons.

Firstly, privacy standards are very high. Romania is outside the Fourteen Eyes and is strong on digital privacy, while CyberGhost delivers reliable IP anonymization, DNS protection, and 256-bit AES encryption. Add in adblocking and anti-malware tools, and it covers all of the security bases.

But it’s also very user-friendly. We loved the ability to connect 7 devices (much more than normal), and there are clients for Linux, Windows, Macs, Android and iOS phones, and even routers.

Just as importantly, CyberGhost offers great value for money. Some short-term packages can be expensive, but if you commit to a year or 18 months, prices drop dramatically. And with a 45-day money-back guarantee, you can sample what the service has to offer before finalizing your decision.

7. ExpressVPN

Company location
Company location: British Virgin Islands (BVI)
Number of servers
Number of servers: 3000
Number of locations
Number of locations: 90
  • Very fast
  • Anonymous payment option
  • Great for streaming and torrenting
  • Very expensive

ExpressVPN is one of the best VPNs for Germany, and it’s head and shoulders above every competitor on this list. As you can see from the features list, it delivers everything most users will need. The encryption is military-grade 256-bit AES, OpenVPN is supported, while DNS leak protection and split tunneling add extra protection.

The company runs a robust zero logs policy, offers 24/7 live chat support, and has a respectable international server network. More importantly, ExpressVPN’s servers deliver reliable speeds. If you intend to watch American Netflix or stream the BBC iPlayer, this is the tool for you.

Everything falls into place here – from the location outside the 14 Eyes to online guides about how to stream sports events. The restriction of 3 simultaneous devices is a minor detail – but apart from that, ExpressVPN delivers for German privacy fans.

Really don’t know why people will still be in need of a VPN while staying in Germany, but I realize that VPN provide an anonymous service aside the need to enjoy certain TV shows broadcasted in other parts of the world.

  2. TomNick

The speed of response to streaming on Netflix is always of choice. No buffering!! More so, the anonymity of my activities and security of my data is very vital. Some other important value mix are accessibility and ease of use

I was unaware about restrictions on accessing certain travel sites depending on your location. So if I have this right, there’s geo-blocking for some travel sites as well as streaming sites like Netflix and Hulu. VyprVPN is a new name to me but it sounds like it might be worth looking into.

ExpressVPN sounds really interesting but the 3 simultaneous devices limitation bothers me a little, I think I’ll go with CyberGhost, it has a limitation of 7 simultaneous devices. Thanks for the article, it helped a lot !

I think that the most important feature of ExpressVPN that impressed me is their fast upload and download speeds. They also have a wide selection of servers and a kill switch, which are things that are high on my list when looking for a VPN, Thanks for the review!
