When it comes to internet freedom, Hungary is relatively permissive. There are no laws against political dissent, the LGBT community is mostly supported, and online content is rarely censored by regulatory bodies.

Regardless, there a virtual private networks (VPN) can be useful in this day and age. For example, connecting to a remote server through VPN allows the user to access content that would ordinarily be filtered through geo-restrictions. For instance, users visiting Hungary would then be able to access Netflix US or BBC iPlayer. A VPN can also protect you from surveillance and allow you to torrent safely. And these are just a couple of the many things a VPN does.

In order to help you find the best VPN for Hungary, then, we’ve assessed several VPN on the following criteria:

  • Strong privacy and security
  • Combination of price and features
  • Location outside the 5/9/14 Eyes (surveillance groups of countries)

1. ExpressVPN

  • Location: British Virgin Islands
  • Pricing: starts at $8.32/month
  • Features: military-grade encryption, browser extensions, private DNS servers

A list of great VPNs cannot go without mentioning ExpressVPN, which has built an enviable reputation on the VPN market. While it is slightly more expensive than the regular asking price, there are several very good reasons why Express is one of the best VPN for Hungary.

Those who are wary about the constant threat of surveillance by the Hungarian government can rest easy with ExpressVPN, which uses AES-256-CBC (an unhackable encryption cipher) to keep your connections tightly under wraps.

With private DNS servers to boot, Express goes the extra mile in making sure your information doesn’t leak from within that encrypted channel.

Finally, one of Express’ standout features is that it supports all the major platforms, including Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux, and routers.

2. NordVPN

  • Location: Panama
  • Pricing: starts at $3.49/month
  • Features: military-grade encryption, massive server list, 24/7 live chat support

If you’re VPN hunting on a budget, a great alternative for ExpressVPN is another roundly-lauded service, the Panamanian NordVPN. It’ll cost you around five dollars less per month than ExpressVPN, and it offers many of the same security features to boot.

As well as boasting military-grade encryption in its arsenal, NordVPN’s registry in Panama is comparable to Express’ registry in the British Virgin Islands.

Panama, after all, has no data retention laws, and it is not a country known for government surveillance. Therefore, NordVPN has no legal obligation to store user activity logs or surrender any information about its users to the authorities—so it doesn’t!

NordVPN also utilizes a massive fleet of servers—over five thousand in sixty-five countries—meaning that users in Hungary (or anywhere) will always be able to access nearby servers for speedier connections.

It also means that users in Hungary are able to access geo-restricted content across those sixty-five countries, thereby expanding your streaming library enormously.

3. Astrill VPN

  • Location: Seychelles
  • Pricing: starts at $8.33/month
  • Features: military-grade encryption, obfuscated servers, high-speed connections

NordVPN and ExpressVPN offer really great connection speeds. If you fancy the slightest extra oomph, however, you may wish to try Astrill VPN.

While it’s unfortunately priced within the same range as ExpressVPN, Astrill also takes extra steps to ensure its users’ connection is impenetrable.

For one thing, it uses the same NASA-grade encryption cipher we’ve observed in the other VPN. As well as this, Astrill is a Seychelles-registered company, meaning that it is similarly free from obligation to data retention laws.

As well as its faster connection speeds, Astrill also has a slight edge when it comes to overall security. With StealthVPN—a modified version of the industry standard OpenVPN protocol—Astrill obfuscates your traffic to keep that extra bit private.

4. VyprVPN

  • Location: Switzerland
  • Pricing: starts at $5.00/month
  • Features: great security, server list, geo-unblocking, torrenting, download speeds

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the prices of the VPN we’ve covered here, you’ll no doubt have noticed that VyprVPN falls smack-bang in the middle.

This doesn’t mean VyprVPN is middle-of-the-road, but rather that it’s a great all-rounder likely to serve the majority of your cybersecurity needs.

What also makes VyprVPN a great candidate for the best VPN for Hungary is its use of the AES-256-GCM encryption cipher, which works faster than the CBC model we’ve observed in the previous VPN options.

This is a great VPN for unblocking geo-restricted content or hiding yourself online. The only thing it’s not great for is torrenting.

5. Ivacy VPN

Ivacy VPN service logo
  • Location: Singapore
  • Pricing: starts at$1.33/month
  • Features: military-grade encryption, high-speed connections, split tunneling, kill switch

If you’re after a VPN that won’t impact your speeds too greatly, then Ivacy is a great, cheaper alternative to Astrill.

As a disclaimer, though, we’d like to make users aware that Ivacy is registered in Singapore, a city-state known for its collaborations with the Five Eyes surveillance group.

Regardless, Ivacy’s security features are second-to-none. For one thing, it does not store usage logs, meaning that if anyone did manage to retrieve the information from their servers, there wouldn’t be anything worthwhile they could find out about you.

As well as this, Ivacy uses AES-256-bit encryption and boasts a kill switch. As a result, the VPN will keep your information secure when you’re logged on—and even when you aren’t.

Add to this the fact that Ivacy is priced at a bargain and we can safely say that this is one of the VPN for Hungary in terms of user-friendliness alone.

6. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN service logo
  • Location: Sweden
  • Pricing: starts at $3.82/month
  • Features: great speeds, security, geo-unblocking, torrent support

Sweden may be known as a bastion of free speech, but it doesn’t have a great reputation for data surveillance. In fact, it’s a member of the Fourteen Eyes alliance, meaning that it and its partners can enjoy unrestricted surveillance access to all your usage data.

This should ideally make PrivateVPN, which is registered in Sweden, a deeply untrustworthy piece of software. However, the company’s privacy policy maintains that PrivateVPN does not store your usage logs.

Better yet, the VPN uses AES-256-bit encryption like all the other choices for best VPN for Hungary. It also uses SteathVPN, which is basically OpenVPN except with the modification to allow it to obfuscate your connection, therefore concealing it even further.

Add to this the fact that the service actively supports torrenting on all its servers and PrivateVPN makes for a good all-rounder that we think is definitely worthy of your consideration.

Finally, this is arguably the best VPN against geo-blocking.

7. Windscribe VPN

Windscribe VPN service logo
  • Location: Canada
  • Pricing: starts at $1.00/month
  • Features: great security, geo-unblocking, air-tight leak protection

First, the bad: as with PrivateVPN, Windscribe is registered in a Fourteen Eyes country (in fact, Canada is part of the original Five Eyes alliance).

Next up, Windscribe’s connection speeds aren’t the best. While it isn’t slow by any stretch of the imagination, there are plenty of VPN services that outperform this by a significant degree.

Fortunately, Hungary has one of the fastest average connection speeds anywhere in the world. While Windscribe means you’ll take a slight hit there, the chances are that your base connection speeds will more than make up for any potential losses.

Now, the great: Windscribe is a strong VPN service that uses the highest-level encryption and provides its users with the ability to unblock geo-restricted country anywhere it has servers.

As such, Hungarian users are thus able to access much larger streaming libraries, and those who are visiting the country’s gorgeous cities and landscape are able to keep up with their favorite TV shows from back home.

While we can’t call it the best VPN for Hungary, then, there’s little to lose in giving Windscribe the time of day.

And the best VPN for Hungary is…

It isn’t often that the most popular options in any given market can also be seen as the best. However, that’s not the case for ExpressVPN, which after thorough research we can absolutely certify it as the best VPN for Hungary.

Though it’s a little more expensive than some may be expecting, ExpressVPN packs a lot of wallop for its asking price. As we mentioned earlier, there is no way of anyone getting past its encryption, and its private DNS servers offer better anti-leak support than most competitors.

However, we understand that some users may be on a budget, and for those, we recommend NordVPN, another market leader that also happens to be one of the best.
