Are you concerned about keeping your messages private, shielding your web browsing habits from the Indonesian government, and anonymizing the files you torrent? Do you want to work around geo-blockers outside Indonesia to access the latest sports events or TV shows?
If so, a Virtual Private Network (VPN) could be ideal. But not all VPNs are equal, so we’ve put together a primer for internet users in the southeast Asian country about how to find the best VPN for Indonesia.
Our criteria are pretty simple:
- Speed – We’ve assessed how fast international speeds are, taking into account a range of servers across the world.
- Security – Encryption, protocols, kill switches, DNS leak protection – all of these key security features have been taken into account.
- Price – There’s no reason why good VPNs should be expensive, so we’ve balanced cost and quality.
- Support – Good providers are always willing to help out customers, so support has to be taken into consideration.
- Software – People use a wide range of devices, including desktops, laptops, and smartphones. So good VPNs should cater to those needs.
No time to read? Here are our best VPNs:
1. NordVPN ‣
- Location: Panama
- Pricing: starts from $3.49/month
- Features: very strong encryption, excellent Netflix unblocking and torrenting, no bandwidth restrictions, strong support, 30-day money back guarantee, no logs, good for P2P
NordVPN works like a dream across the country, making it easily the best VPN for Indonesia in our eyes. Constantly rated among the global privacy elite, this provider scores well in every department, and we’ve found very few flaws to report.
256-Bit AES encryption, cutting-edge protocols, double-hop connections, a reliable kill switch, and DNS leak protection add up to a comprehensive security package – so you can be totally confident about evading censors or criminal snoopers.
Netflix access is incredibly reliable as well, and streaming speeds are universally smooth, while if you’re seeking a VPN for torrenting, look no further.
Prices aren’t in the bargain bin, but NordVPN is very competitively priced, with discounts available almost all the time. And the 30-day money-back guarantee lets you give it a try before committing.
We would recommend sampling what it has to offer, and it’s unlikely you’ll ever need to redeem the guarantee. NordVPN has everything you need, and more.
2. ExpressVPN ‣
- Location: British Virgin Islands
- Pricing: starts from $8.32/month
- Features: unlimited bandwidth, cutting-edge encryption and protocols, very reliable, no logs, a wide range of platforms, 148 servers, 30-day money back guarantee, 24/7 support
ExpressVPN is one of those providers that are always mentioned in top 10 rankings, and there are plenty of reasons for that. For starters, being based in the BVI, ExpressVPN is outside the 14 Eyes surveillance network, so you won’t be caught up in US or European surveillance networks.
ExpressVPN scores highly with 256-bit AES encryption and uses the OpenVPN protocol, which is thought to be more secure than outdated alternatives. Zero knowledge DNS ensures that your web browsing is private, and the no-logs policy is pretty watertight – so the VPN itself shouldn’t snoop on your online activity.
Flexibility is another big plus. Split tunnelling allows you to restrict protection to international sites, speeding up local access. And ExpressVPN offers apps for all major devices, including Android and iOS phones.
Speeds are reliable, if not the fastest around, but the 148 server network spans 94 countries, making ExpressVPN a good option for evading geo-blocks.
And the negatives? There aren’t many. We’ve noted that speeds can be sub-optimal, and prices are slightly above average. But remember, you can take advantage of the 30-day money back guarantee to “try before you buy,” which is always a neat feature.
3. CyberGhost ‣
- Location: Romania
- Pricing: starts from $2.75/month
- Features: Bitcoin payments available, military-grade encryption, no-log policy, IP anonymization, a wide range of platforms, a huge network of 3,000+ servers, 7 device connections at one time
Based in Romania but derived from German expertise, CyberGhost is one of the most popular Virtual Private Networks in the world and definitely qualifies as a contender for the best VPN for Indonesia.
Price-wise, you can find CyberGhost packages for very little, especially if you choose 12 or 18-month options (although short-term packages are surprisingly expensive). And what you get is pretty impressive. 256-bit AES encryption, IKEv2 protocols, full IP anonymization, and efficient ad-blocking via the CyberGhost web add-on add up to an excellent security setup.
In theory, speeds should be right up there with global leaders, thanks to over 3,000 servers, and you can stream Netflix content onto all of your devices thanks to the ability to manage 7 simultaneous connections – more than most providers offer.
Another welcome advantage of CyberGhost is the 45-day money back guarantee. Again, that’s somewhere that the company goes beyond the norm.
All of that is very positive, but are there any CyberGhost cons to think about? No provider is perfect, and there are some negatives. Short-term contracts are quite expensive, while the app itself isn’t the easiest to use.
And while 24/7 support is promised, it’s actually not always possible to access CyberGhost’s live chat feature. Instead, you’ll probably be stuck with their support tickets – not the best way to request assistance.
4. VyprVPN ‣
- Location: Switzerland
- Pricing: starts from $5.00/month
- Features: over 700 servers, 24/7 support, no download restrictions, no third party tech, military-grade encryption, Cloud-based solutions for business, proprietary Chameleon protocol
Operated by Golden Frog, VyprVPN is a slick, reliable Swiss provider which has a good claim to be the best VPN for Indonesia (but doesn’t quite make it, as we’ll see).
Dubbed “the world’s most powerful VPN,” VyprVPN has a lot to live up to, and it does so very well. One of the best things about Vypr is how much the company has invested in its own systems.
Everything they do, from the app code to their servers is managed and developed in-house, cutting out possible security risks. Their Chameleon protocol is unique to Vypr, making information transmitted via OpenVPN invisible to deep packet inspection. This makes the life of surveillance agencies and cybercriminals much harder.
VyprVPN prices are low, even for the Vypr Premium option, which comes with secure Cloud storage (handy for Indonesian businesses). And privacy is very good, thanks to a no-logs policy and total DNS protection.
However, there is one thing to think about before purchasing a VyprVPN subscription. In the past, this Swiss provider has had localized issues with coverage in countries like Egypt and Pakistan. Indonesian users have not experienced too many problems, but it’s a possibility.
Speeds are also a little inconsistent when accessing American or European servers from Jakarta. In general, the network holds up well, ensuring solid streaming performance. But it’s slightly more variable than the best VPN for Indonesia.
5. VPNArea ‣
- Location: Bulgaria
- Pricing: starts from $4.92/month
- Features: 7-day money back guarantee, 6 devices at one time, servers in 70 countries, 24/7 live chat support, no logs policy, strong encryption
Calling itself the “fastest, most anonymous Virtual Private Network,” VPNArea operates out of Bulgaria, placing it outside the 14 Eyes network. That’s a good sign in terms of privacy. The company is strict about avoiding logs, has great encryption (256-bit AES), and it uses the OpenVPN protocol, which is the industry’s gold standard.
As far as price goes, VPNArea can be very, very affordable – as long as you take advantage of their regular discounts. If not, it’s in the middle of the pack. But because it offers only a 7-day money back guarantee, this cost it a few ranking points in our opinion.
However, it gained again in the usability stakes, with a very clear, accessible app. And thanks to a server network of over 200 locations in 70+ countries, VPNArea should perform well when it comes to working around geo-blocks.
So, where does it fall down? The only real issue with VPNArea is speed. Our tests found that it is noticeably slower in Jakarta than the best VPN for Indonesia. This and the company’s anti-P2P stance also make it a poor option for torrenters. But if you want a lightweight Virtual Private Network for emails and web browsing, VPNArea works very well.
- Location: Switzerland
- Pricing: starts from $8.95/month
- Features: servers in 23 countries including Singapore and Hong Kong, no logs, self-managed bare metal servers, multi-hop VPN cascades, IPv6 supported, cutting-edge encryption
Perfect Privacy may well be the best VPN for Indonesia if you are serious about evading surveillance. Everything about this Swiss contender has been tailored to defeat snoopers, from multi-hop cascades, the inclusion of TrackStop cookie blocking, StealthVPN technology, and “neural routing” which uses neural networks to mask web traffic even more efficiently.
These features are genuinely unusual for off-the-shelf Virtual Private Networks, and won’t be easy for government agencies to defeat. So if you have any concerns about privacy, this is definitely a provider to consider.
However, this doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone. For one thing, Perfect Privacy is slightly more expensive than the best VPN for Indonesia, and it has a limited server network (although with servers in southeast Asia, that might not be a huge issue).
Speeds are solid in most instances, but streaming is a bit of a blind spot. Perfect Privacy won’t unblock Netflix, making it a poor choice for entertainment lovers.
7. VPN.ac ‣
- Location: Romania
- Pricing: starts from $3.75/month
- Features: very affordable prices, dedicated servers, strong privacy via multihop connections, reliable speeds, good proxy extensions for browsers
Another Romanian contender for the best VPN for Indonesia, VPN.ac is less well-known than CyberGhost, but well worth checking out. Selling itself as “secure, fast and reliable,” VPN.ac delivers on all of these metrics.
Multihop connections, top of the line encryption, no reliance on third-party suppliers, and the possibility to add 4096-bit RSA authentication, all constitute a solid batch of security features. And you’ll get excellent protection for relatively little, with affordable annual rates (but relatively expensive monthly prices).
The VPN doesn’t log online activity, and customer support is pretty good – with no generic replies, and a promise to escalate all tickets to provide an appropriate response.
So where’s the catch? Well, the server network is very small, with only 20 locations. So if you’re seeking a super fast connection, you may have to rely on luck. The app itself is a little rough around the edges, while Netflix and torrenting aren’t catered for. So again, it’s not great for streaming fans.
Why would you need to pick the best VPN for Indonesia?
Before we run through our selection for the best VPN options in Indonesia, it’s important to understand what VPNs can do, and why they are so important.
Firstly, they allow Indonesians to access services in other countries which would otherwise be out of reach. For example, the TV and movie streaming service Netflix offers limited selections in many regions of the world. But with a VPN, you can log in to the company’s American servers, gaining access to whatever you’d like to watch.
Then there’s censorship and surveillance. In 2018, Reuters reported that the Indonesian government had banned 70,000 “negative sites,” including adult and current affairs sites. VPNs help to evade those kinds of controls.
They also make it possible to hide your web browsing habits and emails from surveillance agencies. Indonesia’s privacy laws are extremely porous, and Jakarta has been investing in online surveillance tools. VPNs can put your mind at rest on this score.
