Whether you’re in Italy for a short trip or you’re living there permanently, a VPN could be your best friend when you’re browsing the internet. By routing your web traffic through a secondary server, a VPN will give you extra privacy, better security, and more.
One of the biggest benefits of using a VPN in Italy is that VPNs can trick websites
into thinking you’re in a completely different country. By masking your IP address, a VPN lets you access thousands of popular websites that are geo-blocked (restricted to use in certain locations), including foreign Netflix, gambling sites and more. If you’re travelling in Italy temporarily and using free, unsecured wifi networks throughout your trip, having a VPN is even more important because it allows you to browse privately without being tracked or hacked.
Searching for VPNs online will bring up tons of results for thousands of VPN companies, which raises the question: which one is the best VPN for Italy? To help the VPN newbies out there, we’ve put together a list that will help you decide on the best VPN for Italy based on 3 main needs:
- Strong privacy and high-level security
- Lots of features at a fair price
- Provider located outside the 5/9/14 Eyes surveillance alliances
Without further ado, here is our list of the best VPNs for Italy.
Best VPN for Italy: Our Guide
- Location: British Virgin Island
- Pricing: starts at $8.32 per month
- Features: over 2,000 servers in 94 countries, fast speeds for streaming, great privacy features, allows torrenting
The first provider on the best VPN for Italy list is ExpressVPN, one of the most highly recommended companies around and a great choice for internet users in Italy.
ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands, which isn’t part of any surveillance group. It also boasts tons of security features, including a no logging policy, a kill switch, and super-strong 265-bit AES encryption to keep your data away from prying eyes.
Another big benefit of ExpressVPN is that it’s great for watching geo-blocked videos while you’re in Italy. Their speeds are some of the fastest out there (fast enough to watch HD content) and they have US, Canada and UK servers that are compatible with Netflix.
Of course, no VPN is perfect. ExpressVPN doesn’t have many downsides, but it does only let you to connect 3 devices at once, so it’s better for individuals than for families. ExpressVPN is also the priciest option in the list. Of course, as with most services, you get what you pay for. ExpressVPN is one of the most dependable, feature-packed VPN options on the market.

- Location: Panama
- Pricing: starts at $2.99 per month
- Features: over 5,000 servers in 62 countries (the largest network available), fast speeds for streaming, great privacy features (including unique double data protection), connect to up to 6 devices at once
Another great VPN option is NordVPN, a Panama-based VPN with ultra-high security and great internet speeds.
NordVPN is one of the cheapest options available, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s low-end. NordVPN offers tons of unique features like SmartPlay technology, which optimizes their servers to work with over 400 geo-blocked streaming platforms—including Netflix and Amazon Prime. NordVPN also has enhanced security features, including two types of kill switches and optional double data protection which routes your traffic through two VPN servers.
On the list of downsides, NordVPN speeds aren’t consistent across all servers. Also, only a few of their servers allow torrenting, so you won’t be able to connect to servers in every country if you have P2P software running. However, these cons won’t affect most people looking for the best VPN for Italy.

- Location: Romania
- Pricing: starts at $2.5 per month
- Features: over 2,900 servers in 59 countries, great privacy features, connect to up to 7 devices at once, compatible with TOR
Based outside the 5/9/14 Eyes, CyberGhost is a well-loved, highly capable VPN provider that’s great for use in Italy.
CyberGhost allows you to connect 7 devices to VPN servers at once, making it great for family and groups. On top of that, their security is impeccable thanks to their no-logging policy and no IP or DNS leaks. However, you should note that CyberVPN speeds don’t measure up well to the competition, barely outstripping many free VPNs. Thus, even though some of their servers work with Netflix, this VPN isn’t ideal for streaming geo-blocked content in Italy.
This VPN has both high points and low points, so consider your needs before deciding whether it’s right for you. If privacy is your top concern, you’ll love it. If you’re more interested in streaming, try another option on the list.

- Location: Hong Kong
- Pricing: starts at $2.95 per month
- Features: over 2,000 servers in 140 countries, lots of added features, connect up to 5 devices simultaneously
PureVPN makes it onto the best VPN for Italy list because it’s packed with great features. However, there are some usability and privacy problems you should be aware of.
On the plus side, PureVPN has an impressive network of servers across 140 countries, making it great for getting around geo-blocking. Plus, you can connect 5 devices simultaneously. However, it does quite a few negatives, including slow download speeds and incompatibility with Netflix. Security also leaves a lot to be desired. We found that PureVPN had DNS and IP leaks, and they also log some of your information. This VPN boasts plenty of benefits, but given how many users have reported problems, use your discretion when deciding if it’s right for you.

- Location: Switzerland (cooperates with 5 Eyes)
- Pricing: starts at $3.75 per month
- Features: over 700 servers in 72 countries, fast speeds for streaming, free trial available, highly optimized EU servers
If you’re hoping to connect to servers in EU countries, VyprVPN is a good choice. Their European servers are highly optimized, making this platform one of the fastest for EU connections. However, users have reported lower speeds with the VyprVPN US servers, and their EU and Canada servers don’t appear to be compatible with Netflix.
Despite that, VyprVPN is still a good choice for security, with no IP or DNS leaks detected. If you sign up to their Premium plan, you can also connect up to 5 devices simultaneously.

- Location: USA (part of the 5 Eyes)
- Pricing: starts at $6.49 per month
- Features: over 1,000 servers in 60 countries, fast speeds for streaming, up to 10 simultaneous connections, great privacy features
The first thing you’ll notice about IPVanish is that it’s based in the USA, which is part of the 5 Eyes alliance. If privacy is your top concern, this may be a deal-breaker for you. If not, IPVanish does offer plenty of other benefits.
For starters, it’s one of the best-performing VPNs on the market, offering superfast speeds that aren’t much slower than using the internet without a VPN. On top of that, this provider allows the most simultaneous connections at once – up to 10 devices, making it perfect for family trips or moves to Italy.
On the downside, only their US servers work with Netflix. Users have also reported slow customer service despite the promise of 24/7/365 support. Despite that, IPVanish is still a good choice for people who are more concerned about getting around geo-blocks while in Italy than they are about privacy protection.

- Location: Sweden (part of the 14 Eyes)
- Pricing: starts at $3.82 per month
- Features: over 80 servers in 56 countries, great privacy features, made specifically for Netflix compatibility, up to 6 connections at once
PrivateVPN is a popular choice for many reasons. Created especially for Netflix, this provider is the only one on the list that is sure to work with Netflix US, Netflix Canada, Netflix UK and Netflix Netherlands while you’re in Italy. PrivateVPN is also easy to use, well-supported, and even allows torrenting.
However, it does have some downsides. In particular, we found that speeds were slower and more inconsistent than other providers. They also have the smallest network of servers on the list (less than 100). Still, if your main reason for getting a VPN is to stream TV shows and movies while you’re abroad, then PrivateVPN is a strong contender for best VPN for Italy.
