  • Unbeatable in terms of security and privacy
  • NordLynx protocol for the best speeds without sacrificing security
  • SmartPlay for smooth streaming experience
  • No router app

NordVPN is a Panama-based VPN with ultra-high security and great internet speeds.

This is one of the cheapest options available, but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s low-end. NordVPN offers tons of unique features like SmartPlay technology, optimizing their servers to work with over 400 geo-blocked streaming platforms—including Netflix and Amazon Prime. NordVPN also has enhanced security features, including two types of kill switch and optional double data protection which routes your traffic through two VPN servers.

On the list of downsides, NordVPN has no custom router app (although you can set it up on routers), and doesn’t allow torrenting on all servers. However, these cons won’t affect most people looking for the best VPN for Italy.

The newest addition to the top ranks, Surfshark VPN is a solid all-rounder offering many features for a low price.

This VPN is exceptionally versatile – it’s great for geo-unblocking when it comes to accessing restricted Netflix libraries. It also works perfectly for torrenting since P2P compatibility is enabled on all servers.

On top of that, you don’t have to make compromises for your privacy as your traffic is secured by a military-grade encryption protocol.

Surfshark also claims that your privacy doesn’t end with the software alone. This comes from the privacy-friendly location of the British Virgin Islands that have no data retention laws.

  • Reliable security features
  • Fast speeds
  • Excellent for Netflix
  • macOS and iOS apps have fewer features

PrivateVPN is a popular choice for many reasons. Created especially for Netflix, this provider is the only one on the list that is sure to work with Netflix US, Netflix Canada, Netflix UK and Netflix Netherlands while you’re in Italy. PrivateVPN is also easy to use, well-supported, and even allows torrenting.

However, it does have some downsides. In particular, we found that speeds were slower and more inconsistent than other providers. They also have the smallest network of servers on the list. Still, if your main reason for getting a VPN is to stream TV shows and movies while you’re abroad, then PrivateVPN is a strong contender for best VPN for Italy.

4. VyprVPN

  • Very safe
  • Fast speeds for streaming
  • Free trial available
  • No anonymous payments

VyprVPN is a provider that’s climbed the ranks recently due to their new and improved privacy policy, which no longer logs user information.

If you’re hoping to connect to servers in EU countries, VyprVPN is a good choice. Their European servers are highly optimized, making this platform one of the fastest for EU connections. However, users have reported lower speeds with the VyprVPN US servers, and their EU and Canada servers don’t appear to be compatible with Netflix.

Despite that, VyprVPN is still a good choice for security, with no IP or DNS leaks detected. If you sign up to their Premium plan, you can also connect up to 5 devices simultaneously.

5. PureVPN

Company location
Company location: Hong Kong
Number of servers
Number of servers: 2000
Number of locations
Number of locations: 140
  • Excellent security features
  • Split tunneling feature
  • 10 simultaneous connections
  • Weak kill switch

PureVPN makes it onto the best VPN for Italy list because it’s packed with great features. However, there are some usability and privacy problems you should be aware of.

On the plus side, PureVPN has an impressive network of servers across 140 countries, making it great for getting around geo-blocking. Plus, you can connect 5 devices simultaneously. However, it does quite a few negatives, including slow download speeds and incompatibility with Netflix. Security also leaves a lot to be desired. We found that PureVPN had DNS and IP leaks, and they also log some of your information. This VPN boasts plenty of benefits, but given how many users have reported problems, use your discretion when deciding if it’s right for you.

6. CyberGhost

Company location
Company location: Romania
Number of servers
Number of servers: 6300
Number of locations
Number of locations: 90
  • Great privacy features
  • 7 simultaneous connections
  • Compatible with TOR
  • macOS and iOS apps have less features

Based outside the 5/9/14 Eyes, CyberGhost is a well-loved, highly capable VPN provider that’s great for use in Italy.

CyberGhost allows you to connect 7 devices to VPN servers at once, making it great for family and groups. On top of that, their security is impeccable thanks to their no-logging policy and no IP or DNS leaks. However, you should note that CyberVPN speeds don’t measure up well to the competition, barely outstripping many free VPNs. Thus, even though some of their servers work with Netflix, this VPN isn’t ideal for streaming geo-blocked content in Italy.

This VPN has both high points and low points, so consider your needs before deciding whether it’s right for you. If privacy is your top concern, you’ll love it. If you’re more interested in streaming, try another option on the list.

Another provider on the best VPN for Italy list is ExpressVPN, one of the most highly recommended companies around and a great choice for internet users in Italy.

ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands, which isn’t part of any surveillance group. It also boasts tons of security features, including a no-logging policy, a kill switch, and super-strong 265-bit AES encryption to keep your data away from prying eyes.

Another big benefit of ExpressVPN is that it’s great for watching geo-blocked videos while you’re in Italy. Their speeds are some of the fastest out there (fast enough to watch HD content) and they have US, Canada and UK servers that are compatible with Netflix.

Of course, no VPN is perfect. ExpressVPN doesn’t have many downsides, but it is the priciest option on the list. Of course, as with most services, you get what you pay for. ExpressVPN is one of the most dependable, feature-packed VPN options on the market.

I really do enjoy seeing some of the online images of the statues found in Italy, the architectural pattern of their buildings is also great. So knowing one or two about the VPN I would need when visiting Italy is quite helpful.

  2. Julio P

Well I always think of using VPNs for countries like Russia or China but never for European countries like Italy or France. In the end no matter where you go, always use a VPN.

  3. Reeses Fan #1

One of the things I like about this site is they provide tailor-made articles for people looking to use VPN’s in particular countries. Every country is different in terms of security and requirements (or simple things like geo-blocking) so one VPN might work better for Italy than it would in France or Japan. I obtained a VPN service after comparing brands here.

  5. NapoleoneCalabresi223

I’m planning to spend three weeks in Italy this summer to visit my aunt Vanna and decided to start looking for a VPN that work for me while I’m there. As you say, ExpressVPN is a little more expensive than some of the others, but it seems to a great value if you take into consideration their speed, security and spectacular unblocking capabilities.
