Kenya had always been a country that was fairly safe when it came to internet privacy. However, that has changed in recent years due to new laws that were enacted by the increasingly anti-privacy government.

For this reason, it’s important for users in Kenya to have adequate protection whenever they use the internet. This can be achieved through the use of a VPN, and we have compiled a list of the 5 best VPNs available to you in Kenya along with why you should use them.

Why use a VPN in Kenya and how we rank them

Using a VPN is generally a good idea no matter which country you are in, since it can protect you from spying and numerous other privacy threats. However, it’s more important than ever to use a VPN in Kenya due to the new laws passed in 2018 that allow the government to have much greater control over your internet connection.

Apart from security, a VPN can help you access geo-blocked services such as Netflix US (which has the highest amount of content) and BBC iPlayer. In essence, a VPN is used to simply grant you unrestricted and uncensored access to the internet.

So, in order to determine the best VPN for Kenya, here is the criteria we followed:

  • security of the VPN (encryption, protocols etc.)
  • firewall and anti-censorship features
  • unblocking and torrenting capabilities
  • ease-of-use and customer support
  • speeds and performance
  • pricing

Here are the 5 best VPNs based on these ranking factors.

All-around leading VPN
Forward-thinking and highly affordable
Cheap VPN with surprisingly good speeds
A great all-rounder with exceptional customer support
Lightning fast

1. NordVPN

Top VPN provider
NordLynx, OpenVPN, IKEv2
Number of servers
Number of servers:
Number of locations
Number of locations:
  • Unbeatable in terms of security and privacy
  • SmartPlay for smooth streaming experience
  • Excellent for P2P
  • No router app

NordVPN has long been the king of security. Although it’s debatable whether NordVPN is the absolute best VPN in the market, there is no doubt that it is right up at the top. NordVPN has all the security you could need with AES-256 encryption (the same one used by banks and militaries worldwide) to safeguard your data. It also has multiple security protocols, a kill-switch to prevent data leaks, and great torrenting support.

NordVPN does not keep any logs that can be traced back to you. Although they do keep some information which is used to make sure their service performs well, their no-logs policy is audited externally (Nord is only one of the two VPNs in the world that does this) as proof that they do not retain customer data.

The only issues people have with NordVPN are that their speeds are not exceptional when compared to other industry-leading VPNs like ExpressVPN, and Nord does not have router support. While it’s still possible to set up NordVPN on your router through custom protocols, having a dedicated application still makes things a lot easier.

2. Surfshark VPN

Top VPN provider
OpenVPN and IKEv2
Number of servers
Number of servers:
Number of locations
Number of locations:
  • Great in terms of security
  • Smart DNS to help you bypass geo-blocks
  • Unlimited simultaneous connections
  • Weak self-help support section

Looking at the features of Surfshark VPN and comparing them to their pricing model, it is difficult to figure out how Surfshark can offer its services for so cheap. Surfshark has amazing security coupled with enough features to make it an extremely worthwhile purchase.

Surfshark offers its users Double VPN, which allows them to route their traffic through 2 different VPN servers as opposed to just one for extra security. This is an extremely rare feature offered only by industry leaders such as NordVPN. Not only that, Surfshark has all the right security features including numerous protocols and AES-256 encryption.

Surfshark is also great for geo-blocking everything from Netflix to Hulu. You can use Surfshark to torrent as much as you want or watch your favorite shows on Netflix which are not available to users in Kenya.

However, Surfshark could be better when it comes to speeds – just like NordVPN. On top of that, their customer support was simply sub-par. Compared to other leading VPNs, it is simply not justifiable to have a customer support team that is so atrociously slow to respond to queries.

3. PrivateVPN

Number of servers
Number of servers:
Number of locations
Number of locations:
  • Good security features
  • Very fast
  • Excellent for streaming and torrenting
  • macOS and iOS apps have fewer features

PrivateVPN is another cheap solution for those who are looking to get a VPN without spending a lot of money. From what we have seen, this is a VPN that can give you decent speeds and allow you to access everything from torrents to Netflix. Couple that with the fact that it has decent privacy features, and you have a pretty good VPN on your hands.

The main reason that PrivateVPN is not further up the list is because it does not have a lot of servers. In total, there are over 100 servers available to you in around 60 different locations. While you may be thinking that this will throttle the speeds, we found that not to be the case.

Another area where PrivateVPN lags behind some of the other VPNs is customer support. This tends to be the case with cheaper VPNs since they are not able to afford the additional personnel required to maintain adequate security.

4. CyberGhost

WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2
Number of servers
Number of servers:
Number of locations
Number of locations:
  • Powerful kill switch
  • Good for Netflix and torrenting
  • 7 simultaneous connections
  • Can get expensive unless you subscribe for longer periods

CyberGhost has all the features that you would expect from an industry-leading VPN packed into a decent user-interface. It has AES-256 encryption, support for all the important protocols such as OpenVPN, a kill switch, and the ability for you to use it on 7 devices simultaneously.

However, the main limiting factor for CyberGhost is the fact that it is exceptional at absolutely nothing. While NordVPN is the perfect VPN for security, ExpressVPN for speed, and Surfshark for pricing, CyberGhost is simply “good” at all of those. When you couple this with the fact that there are cheaper options available in the market, you can see why this is only the third-best VPN for Kenya.

If you are someone who uses the internet for general purposes or you’re looking for a VPN that will be utilized by a large family, then CyberGhost may very well be the perfect option for you. However, if the majority of your internet activity requires you to have either extra performance or extra security, then it might be better for you to get a VPN that is more suited to that particular niche.

5. ExpressVPN

Number of servers
Number of servers:
Number of locations
Number of locations:
  • Great security features
  • Incredibly fast
  • Perfect for streaming, gaming, and torrenting
  • Very expensive

ExpressVPN is considered the best VPN in the market by many. That is because it has top-notch security and all the features that anyone would expect from a VPN that is priced at such a premium. ExpressVPN has over 3,000 servers in more than 90 countries, along with custom apps for routers as well as every single mainstream operating system currently available.

On top of this, ExpressVPN can unblock pretty much everything. The fact that it is one of the few VPNs that can stream Netflix at UHD quality makes it absolutely perfect for anyone who wants to watch a lot of movies and shows. Of course, ExpressVPN is also able to torrent and access all other geo-blocked content with ease.

However, just remember that all of this comes at a price. In fact, this is the main reason why ExpressVPN is not higher up in our list – it’s pretty expensive. Most people in Kenya will not require ExpressVPN and will be better off saving their money for other things by purchasing one of the cheaper alternatives in this list.

Is it safe to use a VPN in Kenya?

The government in Kenya has been introducing new internet privacy laws over the years which curtail the freedom of the individual. However, the one good that is that the use of a VPN is still legal in Kenya like in most other countries.

Once you turn on your VPN and connect to one of the servers, you can use the internet with ease. There is absolutely no way for the government, or anyone else for that matter, to spy on any of your activity.

There are no websites in Kenya that are banned as such, but you will not have access to some of the best streaming content, which you will also be able to access once you use one of the above VPNs.

The best VPN for Kenya, based on our analysis, is Windscribe. Although you only get 10GB of data per month, the service is quite good since you can upgrade to a pro plan as well.

Unfortunately there are more and more countries that fight their people instead of trying to represent them. A VPN is needed in countries like Kenya because some people just want to suppress freedom of speech.
