Virtual Private Networks are an essential part of staying safe online. Capable of creating secure encrypted tunnels between home or business networks and the wider internet, VPNs shield your communications and identity, providing multiple benefits in the process.

These benefits apply to Peru just as much as anywhere else. So we’ve compiled a list of our favourite local contenders, concluding with our pick for the best VPN for Peru.

Why Peruvian internet users need a high-quality VPN

To some people, Virtual Private Networks might seem like overkill. After all, do they need anonymization if they already have antivirus and malware protection?

In most cases, yes. VPNs have some unique abilities which make them really appealing for Peruvian web users. Firstly, they allow people to work around “geo-blockers” – which platforms like Netflix use to segment their audience. That way, you can maximize the amount of TV shows and movies available to watch.

Flight fares and accommodation can also be subject to geographical filters. With a Virtual Private Network, you can render these filters inoperable, and find the best travel prices from providers across the world.

Gamers can benefit from providers which offer fast servers and DDoS protection, while everyone can benefit from privacy protection. With America’s NSA extending its surveillance net worldwide, and Lima investing in tools to monitor the whole population, it makes sense to hide your activity from any snoopers.

How we’ve rated the best VPN for Peru

As we’ll see, there are plenty of excellent options for Peruvian privacy lovers. We’ve compared a huge range of companies, testing out their performance and policies. Here’s a quick summary of the criteria we used:

  1. Speed – good providers are fast providers. We’ve eliminated services with chronic lag and small server networks.
  2. Flexibility – multiple device connections, plenty of apps, a range of protocols, StealthVPN, Smart Modes – these are the features we look for in flexible VPNs.
  3. Reliability – we aren’t interested in services which drop all the time, no matter how fast they are.
  4. Privacy – our favourite providers are safely outside the “14-eyes surveillance network”, and they have solid no-logging policies too.
  5. Security – only services with advanced encryption and a track record of avoiding breaches qualify for our list.
  6. Value – price isn’t our sole concern, but we aren’t interested in overpriced, mediocre providers.

ExpressVPN

Location: British Virgin Islands

Pricing: $8.32 month for 1 year

ExpressVPN logoFeatures: unblocks Netflix, 256-bit encryption, kill switch, multiple apps, 3 simultaneous devices, 30-day money-back guarantee, servers in 94 countries, supports OpenVPN, L2TP-IPsec, SSTP, and PPTP protocols, no logs, split tunneling

While often ranked number one in our national top lists, ExpressVPN doesn’t quite make the grade as the best VPN for Peru. However, don’t get the impression that this is a sub-standard provider. It’s one of the best around for South American web users.

All of the building blocks of a great VPN are here: 256-bit AES encryption, all major protocols, split tunnelling to allow maximum flexibility, DNS leak protection, and a kill switch should things go wrong. So you’ll be safe and sound whatever you get up to online.

P2P is catered for, with excellent speeds and plenty of local servers to use. And entertainment fans will appreciate ExpressVPN’s very impressive track record on Netflix unblocking. There are apps for all major devices, and the client could hardly be easier to use.

So where are the negatives? Well, we found that the champion provider for Peru was more flexible – offering unlimited device connections. And it was marginally faster as well. But, to be sure, there wasn’t much to choose between them.

NordVPN

Location: Panama

Pricing: $6.99 month for 1 year

NordVPN logoFeatures: 30-day money-back guarantee, kill switch, DoubleVPN, TOR supported, P2P friendly, unblocks Netflix, 256-bit AES encryption, CyberSec protection, dedicated IPs available, no logs, no bandwidth restrictions, over 5,000 servers in 62 countries (including multiple South American locations).

Based in Panama (safely outside the 14-eyes network), NordVPN is right up there with ExpressVPN in the upper echelons of the global privacy elite. And the great thing about NordVPN is that you get premium features for a significantly lower price – something which immediately caught our eye.

Security is locked tight with NordVPN. 256-bit military-grade encryption combines with advanced protocols, a kill switch, DNS leak protection and added features like CyberSec – which guards against malware and malicious websites. And the no logs policy is reassuring, too.

Users very rarely report any issues regarding Netflix unblocking, and NordVPN’s P2P record is second to none, ensuring excellent download speeds. The 30-day money-back guarantee is always there if for some reason your speeds don’t measure up.

So why isn’t NordVPN the best VPN for Peru? Well, our speed tests showed the champion just out-runs NordVPN for most operations, and while NordVPN offers 6 connections at one time, that’s not as attractive as unlimited devices. Still, it’s an excellent privacy tool.

BulletVPN

Location: Estonia

Pricing: $7.49 month for 1 year

bulletvpn logoFeatures: kill switch, 256-bit encryption, unblocks Netflix, wide range of apps, 30-day money-back guarantee, 3 simultaneous devices, many protocols supported, Smart DNS, 24/7 support with live chat, no bandwidth limits, global server network.

Based in the Baltic nation of Estonia (outside the 14-eyes), BulletVPN is a low-cost, lesser-known contender for the crown of best VPN for Peru. So how did it do in our testing?

Well, not bad at all as it turns out. BulletVPN offers zero bandwidth or traffic restrictions and is very P2P friendly, so it’s a useful option for torrenting fans. And it’s a reliable Netflix unblocker, too – opening up worldwide TV and movies for Peruvian audiences.

You can easily get in touch with their (English speaking) support via 24/7 live chat, and security is also rock solid. 256-bit encryption, Smart DNS, and all leading protocols add up to an effective shield against government snoopers.

However, there are some limitations to BulletVPN’s service. The server network is a little small by elite standards, and there aren’t many servers in South America. That doesn’t mean you won’t find good speeds, but it makes it less likely. And 3 simultaneous devices are fewer than you’d hope for. So families might feel short-changed.

VPNArea

Location: Bulgaria

Pricing: $8.33 month for 6 months

vpnarea logoFeatures: strong encryption, DNS protection, no logs, unblocks Netflix, uses OpenVPN, easy to use the app, over 200 servers in 65+ countries, router setups available, 5 simultaneous devices.

Located in Bulgaria, and tucked away outside the 14-eyes network, VPNArea is another slightly less well-known option. And, like BulletVPN, it’s definitely worth considering for Peruvian web users.

Encryption is pretty much flawless, while DNS protection makes users almost totally anonymous. OpenVPN protocols are supported, and you can install VPNArea on routers as well, a handy option for larger households or businesses.

This provider won’t let you down when it comes to Netflix unblocking, and with servers in over 60 countries, you can access content across the globe. And the ability to connect 5 devices at one time is also welcome.

As for negatives, the speed of VPNArea could be a lot faster, which instantly disqualifies it as the best VPN for Peru. The server network is comparatively small, and many servers don’t support P2P. Moreover, support isn’t particularly extensive, with no live chat facility. So while thus Bulgarian provider is a great value, it’s not the best around.

CyberGhost

Location: Romania

Pricing:$5.25 month for 1 year

Cyberghost logoFeatures: 256-bit encryption, unblocks Netflix, kill switch, P2P supported, over 3,000 servers, unlimited bandwidth and traffic, apps for many platforms, 45-day money-back guarantee, supports OpenVPN, L2TP-IPsec and PPTP protocols, DNS leak protection, no logs policy.

Romania’s CyberGhost is also outside the 14-eyes, and suitable for South American internet users. Again, it narrowly misses out on the top spot in our hunt for the best VPN for Peru, but not by much.

Privacy and security are strong points with CyberGhost. 256-bit encryption, OpenVPN and L2TP-IPSec protocols combine with advanced DNS protection and an always-on kill switch to offer reliable protection. So we had few criticisms there.

You can rely on CyberGhost to unblock Netflix when needed, and P2P downloaders will appreciate their reliable servers and excellent speeds. The CyberGhost app is also available for all major platforms, while the 45-day money back guarantee is the most generous in the business.

We loved all of those features, and there’s no doubting that CyberGhost is a fine security tool. But it’s not flawless. For one thing, support isn’t perfect, with only email tickets and live chat available. And some things are missing that we’d like to see – such as TOR compatibility, StealthVPN, or split tunnelling.

Perfect Privacy

Location: Switzerland

Pricing: $9.99 month for 1 year

Perfect privacyFeatures: zero logs, 256-bit AES encryption, unblocks Netflix, P2P friendly, unlimited devices, kill switch, OpenVPN supported, NAT firewall support, TrackStop malware protection, StealthVPN, neuro-routing, 7 days money-back guarantee

Switzerland’s Perfect Privacy is an upscale provider with plenty of unique features. Retailing for slightly more than most of our choices, Perfect Privacy bundles in enough extras to make it worth considering.

For example, StealthVPN adds an extra layer of security, ensuring that outsiders won’t be able to tell whether you are using a Virtual Private Network. And TrackStop blocks tracking cookies, banishing adware forever.

Moreover, you can connect as many devices as you need to, making Perfect Privacy ideal for schools or small businesses. And it can be installed on routers with ease while unblocking Netflix isn’t an issue.

On the negative side, Perfect Privacy is a little hard to configure for iOS and Android phones, and there’s a 1,000 Mbps bandwidth limit, so you may find that torrents don’t download at optimal speeds. In fact, speed is the one area where this provider falls down. Aside from that (and the premium price), it’s a solid, advanced privacy option.

PureVPN

Location: Hong Kong

Pricing: $2.95 month for 1 year ($10.95 for 1 month)

Pure VPN logoFeatures: DNS and IPv6 leak protection, 256-bit encryption, IP masking, 2,000 servers in 140 countries, 24/7 live chat, split tunnelling, unlimited bandwidth, P2P friendly, anti-throttling tools, 5 devices per household, DDoS protection, kill switch.

Located in Hong Kong, PureVPN is one of the most high-profile providers around, and it’s a very effective option for Peruvian users. But for a number of reasons, it doesn’t quite make it as the best VPN for Peru.

On the plus side, PureVPN’s security setup is excellent. 256-bit AES encryption, full IP masking, DDoS protection and IPv6 leak protection (not included with all VPNs) complete an impressive suite of features.

Performance is excellent, thanks to a 2,000 strong international server network. There are specialist features to combat ISP throttling (which can be a big problem in Peru), and there aren’t any bandwidth limits. You can connect to P2P servers with no problems, and Netflix blocks hardly make a dent. 5 simultaneous devices should also be plenty for most users.

However, the Hong Kong location might spook some people. China is notoriously hostile to encryption and requires operators to sign up to certain terms. So there’s no guarantee that PureVPN hasn’t created a backdoor for Chinese officials.

Perhaps most importantly, PureVPN doesn’t offer reliable download speeds. So while it unblocks Netflix well, finding a smooth stream is another matter.

And the best VPN for Peru is… AstrillVPN

Location: The Seychelles

Pricing: $8.33 month for 1 year ($50 for Astrill VPN routers)

AstrillVPN logoFeatures: router compatibility, unlimited devices, unlimited bandwidth, 256-bit AES encryption, unblocks Netflix, P2P friendly, no logs, DNS leak protection, Smart Mode, StealthVPN, kill switch, TOR friendly, 327 servers in 65 countries, including nations in South America.

Our pick for the best VPN for Peru might come out of left-field for some people. However, Astrill VPN scored well on every area, making it the clear winner in our opinion.

Based in Seychelles, Astrill is well outside the 14-eyes, and its security and privacy features are strong. 256-bit AES encryption, DNS leak protection, various protocols, StealthVPN, and a solid no logging policy provide users with everything they need to stay safe online.
