Singapore has collaborated with the Five Eyes alliance in the past, but in 2019, cybersecurity has become even more of a concern for citizens of the city-state. Essentially, the ruling party has upped its surveillance powers with several new acts, one of which effectively bans all communication during “serious incidents.”
A lack of communication during a “serious incident” can be dangerous, especially if you’re only visiting Singapore in the first place. As such, it’s important that you care for your own safety and security, and one of the best ways of doing so is investing in a virtual private network (VPN).
A VPN pings your IP address to remote servers in order to allow your device to pretend it’s in a totally different location. As a bonus, this also allows you to choose servers in strategic locations in order to unlock geo-restricted content, thus allowing you to keep up to date on your favorite shows while visiting Singapore.
As well as this, VPNs are usually fitted with military-grade encryption (AES-256-bit) that no computer in the world could crack. Not every VPN has ideal security settings, though, and there are hundreds of VPN for you to choose from. To help, we’ve created a guide to the best VPN for Singapore that will allow you to circumvent geo-restrictions and remain in charge of your data privacy.
In our research, we looked for VPN with the following qualities:
- strong security and privacy;
- combination of price and features; and
- a location outside the 5/9/14 eyes surveillance group of countries.
The best VPNs for Singapore
1. NordVPN ‣
- Location: Panama
- Pricing: starts at $2.99/month
- Features: great security, server list, geo-unblocking, support
Prying eyes are no match for NordVPN, arguably the best VPN for Singapore. Located in Panama, Nord is free from having to comply with any data laws, so there’s no way government surveillance can possibly reach you with this software.
Quite simply, Nord passes all our tests quite easily. Aside from being registered outside of the 5/9/14 Eyes surveillance group, it packs a great deal of punch into its $2.99/month payment plan. The combination of NASA-grade encryption, a reliable kill switch, and DNS leak protection alone are enough to make double-sure that no-one can violate your data privacy.
Furthermore, Nord’s massive fleet of servers stretches across sixty-plus countries, which provides you ample opportunity to unlock whichever geo-restricted content you want. In the event that doesn’t work, you can always contact the company’s fantastic customer service team, which is available 24/7 and always very helpful.
- Location: Seychelles
- Pricing: starts at $8.33/month
- Features: great security, server list, torrenting, download speeds, support
Singapore has one of the highest average internet connection speeds anywhere in the world. It’d be a shame to lose that, wouldn’t it? With Astrill VPN, you needn’t have the concerns you would with lesser (or free) VPN, as it’s designed with torrenting in mind and, therefore, with download speeds in mind too.
Astrill is so much more than a speedy downloader, however. As with NordVPN, it’s practically impenetrable, relying on the same AES-256-bit encryption cipher and DNS leak protection that makes our top choice so perfect for safe surfing. Astrill’s registry location, Seychelles, also has no data retention laws and resides far beyond the grasp of the Eyes alliances.
Unfortunately, this all comes at a price, especially if you’re a hardcore gamer and need even faster download speeds. That’ll cost you an extra $10 per month, but if you’re passionate enough about your needs, it’s arguably worth paying a little extra for higher speeds on your hyper-secure VPN server.
3. ExpressVPN ‣
- Location: British Virgin Islands
- Pricing: starts at $8.32/month
- Features: great security, accessibility, geo-unblocking, torrenting
ExpressVPN is the go-to VPN for many, and in fact, it remains one of the best VPN for Singapore altogether. In context, though, Express is essentially an amalgam of Nord and Astrill’s main qualities. Specifically, it has the accessibility and geo-unblocking abilities of the former and the torrenting capabilities of the latter.
Fortunately, ExpressVPN has the security levels of both VPN we’ve mentioned so far. Unfortunately, it’s in Astrill’s price range. Even more unfortunately, Express is yet to commit to an independent no-logs policy audit as its competitors have.
While that doesn’t prevent it from being a fantastic all-rounder, we believe there’s slightly more value in Astrill’s download speeds, especially when you’re branching out into a higher price range. Still, it’s hard to knock ExpressVPN’s strengths and achievements overall, especially given its private, encrypted, zero-knowledge DNS server that all but guarantees a lack of information leaks.
4. VyprVPN ‣
- Location: Switzerland
- Pricing: starts at $5.00/month
- Features: great security, server list, geo-unblocking, torrenting, download speeds
While it isn’t known for its speeds like Astrill is, VyprVPN has certain other advantages that make it a great VPN for torrenting and gaming.
It’s developed by a company called Golden Frog who also developed Chameleon, a custom protocol that works to prevent bandwidth throttling. VyprVPN and Chameleon go hand in hand together, making sure you can use unlimited bandwidth with uninhibited connection while remaining anonymous and private on the internet.
Indeed, its security credentials are second-to-none: it’s registered in Switzerland (outside the 5/9/14 Eyes alliances), and it uses the same military-grade security as the other VPN we’ve mentioned. The price is slightly higher than we’d perhaps like, but nevertheless, with features like these, VyprVPN remains a solid candidate as one of the best VPN for Singapore.
- Location: British Virgin Islands
- Pricing: starts at $3.49/month (or $1.99 from affiliates)
- Features: great security, geo-unblocking, torrent support, download speeds
Before getting into this impressive newcomer, it’s worth mentioning one thing: its kill switch only works on the Windows app. For MacOS, iOS, and Android users, then, this is far from the best VPN for Singapore. How else does it measure up for Windows users, though?
Well, for one thing, it features an updated encryption cipher – AES-256-GCM, which runs much faster than the AES-256-CBC cipher we’ve seen so far. It’s also much faster at downloading than many a VPN, which makes this a perfect (and perfectly secure) piece of software for fans of torrenting.
Although it runs on a smaller fleet of servers than most, it’s great at unblocking geo-restricted content. In fact, it’s way better than such a cheap VPN has any right to be. With any hope, Surfshark will continue to fix its nagging problems and become one of the best VPN of all time; until then, it still remains a solid choice for Windows users in Singapore.
6. PrivateVPN ‣
- Location: Sweden
- Pricing: starts at $3.82/month
- Features: great speeds, security, geo-unblocking, torrent support
Although PrivateVPN is a Swedish-registered company and therefore falls under the jurisdiction of the Fourteen Eyes alliance, there’s little else that prevents this from being a properly good alternative to some of the best VPN for Singapore. In fact, if it weren’t for its registry location, PrivateVPN might have made it to the upper echelons of our list altogether.
Starting at a very reasonable price, PrivateVPN packs a lot of punch into its small fleet of servers. The company behind it actually purchases internet capacity straight from the IP transit provider, which means this is a VPN that is surprisingly quick. Not only does this make it good for torrenting and gaming, but also for streaming Netflix and iPlayer in UHD.
It does a great job of unlocking those geo-restricted streaming services, too. In terms of restricted content of any kind, there’s little PrivateVPN can’t get around. This makes it an efficient little VPN for navigating Singapore’s mysterious blacklist and doing it quickly.
- Location: Canada
- Pricing: starts at $1.00/month
- Features: great security, leak-protection, geo-unblocking, port forwarding, malware and ad blocking
Canadian registry aside, Windscribe VPN is a solid alternative for the best VPN for Singapore. How is that possible, you ask? Well, after countless log requests made to Windscribe by the Five Eyes alliance (of which Canada is a member), the VPN failed to comply due to “lack of relevant data.”
This makes for great cybersecurity based on its tried-and-tested no-logs policy alone. Should anyone else somehow get around Windscribe’s military-grade encryption (which certainly isn’t likely), your data is protected by DNS, IPv6, and WebRTC leak protection.
Unfortunately, Windscribe doesn’t have the download speeds to back it up. Nevertheless, it sates your desire for great features with time zone spoofing, double hopping, and Netflix unblocking, which we think is just about worth the asking price. Of course, if you’d still rather go with a VPN that isn’t registered in a Five Eyes country, that’s completely understandable – that’s why we included it last!
And the best VPN for Singapore is… NordVPN!
Every VPN we’ve included here has something to offer, but when it comes down to it, the best VPN for Singapore is NordVPN. It has the best balance of security, budget-friendly pricing, and the ability to unblock any geo-restricted streaming service you could possibly wish for. Better yet, it’s registered in Panama – a haven for data protection if there ever was one.
Nord is the cheapest option we’ve included, but alas, there may be other options you’d wish to try based on specialized interests. Other VPN located outside the 5/9/14 group include ExpressVPN, VyprVPN, Surfshark, and Astrill VPN, whereas Windscribe packs the most potent leak protection on the market. However, for gamers and torrent enthusiasts, you may wish to try the slightly more expensive Astrill, which is lightning fast and designed, in part, for torrenting.
