There’s always a need for a virtual private network (VPN) in this day and age because the anonymity and privacy they provide make it borderline impossible to track (or, more importantly, hack). Even in Taiwan, which has long had a reputation as a bastion of free speech, the government has been revealed to have spied on its own citizens with worrying frequency.

VPN protects you by connecting to a remote server, which pings your IP address to that server’s location and causes data trackers to believe your device is in a different country altogether.

On a lighter note, connecting to servers in different locations also means you have access to that location’s geo-restricted content – including its streaming services. That means visitors in Taiwan are able to keep up with television shows from home, and Taiwanese travelers are able to do the same.

With so many VPNs on the market, however, it can be difficult to know what to look for. To help, we’ve created a guide to the best VPN for Taiwan that allows you to freely access the content you need while keeping your data private and secure.

In our research, we looked for VPNs with the following qualities:

  • strong security and privacy
  • combination of price and features
  • a location outside the 5/9/14 Eyes surveillance group of countries

7 best VPNs for Taiwan

1. NordVPN

NordVPN service logo
  • Location: Panama
  • Pricing: starts at $2.99/month
  • Features: military-grade security, huge server list, geo-unblocking, support

With Taiwan expected to become positively Orwellian in the coming years, there’s no better option than a rock-solid VPN known for its NASA-level security. Enter NordVPN: one of the most reputable VPNs on the market today, and certainly the best choice for web users in Taiwan.

Nord’s fleet of servers is enormous; there are more than five thousand in over sixty countries. Even if someone was able to break the AES-256-bit encryption cipher – which they wouldn’t be able to – there’d be no way they could track down your actual IP address from the range of options you have on your end.

All this for less than $3 per month! More so than any of its competitors, Nord combines value for money with incredible features that make it easily the best VPN for Taiwan. The massive fleet of servers also ensures you can access geo-restricted content in just about any territory you wish, which is perfect for vacationers and traveling workers alike.

2. Astrill VPN

Astrill VPN service logo
  • Location: Seychelles
  • Pricing: starts at $8.33/month
  • Features: great security, server list, torrenting, download speeds, support

Astrill VPN is a little more expensive than our top choice, but regardless, it remains one of the best VPNs for Taiwan at the moment. Although it has a considerably smaller fanbase than Nord or its main competitor, ExpressVPN, Astrill is a testy up-and-comer that boasts some of the fastest internet speeds of any VPN presently available.

Once again, Astrill boasts a large server list, and for its price you get, among other things, two very important VPN protocols. These protocols are OpenVPN and IKEv2; the former is the ideal choice for desktop security, while the latter is the best bet for maintaining data privacy on a mobile device. As well as this, Astrill comes with a dedicated P2P VPN, perfect for torrenting on an ultra-secure server.

Again, though, we must return to the issue of pricing. Is the extra financial commitment worth it when Astrill has many of the same security features as NordVPN and ExpressVPN? That depends on what you’re after, really; if you’re a gamer, Astrill VPN was designed with you in mind; for regular internet users, you’re better off going with NordVPN overall.

But only just.

3. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN service logo
  • Location: British Virgin Islands
  • Pricing: starts at $8.32/month
  • Features: great security, accessibility, geo-unblocking, torrenting

Another VPN that allows for multi-platform accessibility, geo-unblocking, and high-end security, ExpressVPN is easily the most famous and well-respected VPN on the market today. So why didn’t we list it first before NordVPN and Astrill as the best VPN for Taiwan?

Well, to put it bluntly, ExpressVPN hasn’t commissioned an independent audit of their zero-logs policy like other VPN services have. This doesn’t make it totally untrustworthy, exactly, but when your data privacy is at risk, it’s best practice to have the strongest measures available to you at the time. Nevertheless, ExpressVPN’s reputation may be enough to convince you it’s the best choice for your set purposes, and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Then there’s the issue of the price. Unlike Astrill VPN, which specializes in torrenting, ExpressVPN mostly provides the benefits available to NordVPN users… and it’s an extra $5 per month. Again, though, you’re paying for brand recognition, and ExpressVPN is a recognized brand for a reason; it’s ultra-secure, endlessly reliable, and great for accessing censored content all over the globe.

4. VyprVPN

VyprVPN service logo
  • Location: Switzerland
  • Pricing: starts at $5.00/month
  • Features: great security, server list, geo-unblocking, torrenting, download speeds

If you can’t decide between choosing a VPN that specializes in gaming or torrenting, it’s always worth given Golden Frog’s VyprVPN a shot. With a great server list and the ability to unblock just about any geo-restricted content, this is another one of the best VPNs for Taiwan.

VyprVPN doesn’t skimp on security, either. It’s registered in Switzerland, which is automatically a good sign because it means it doesn’t have to comply with any data retention laws.

As well as this, it has an independently audited no-logs policy, which means you don’t have to just take Golden Frog’s word for it (or ours, even) – this is a secure VPN that is highly unlikely to leak your information to the prying eyes of the Taiwanese government.

Indeed, there are cheaper VPNs, but VyprVPN isn’t necessarily bad for its five-dollar monthly starting charge. Altogether, it’s a great all-rounder with an appropriately mid-range price to match.

5. Surfshark VPN

Surfshark VPN service logo
  • Location: British Virgin Islands
  • Pricing: starts at $3.49/month (or $1.99 from affiliates)
  • Features: great security, geo-unblocking, torrent support, download speeds

Surfshark is an idiosyncratic addition to this list in many ways. It’s a newcomer to the VPN game, and with its ongoing developments, it’s catching up to the competition quickly enough.

What makes it one of the best VPNs for Taiwan, though, is its updated encryption cypher: AES-256-GCM, which is faster than the industry standard AES-256-CBC. It also provides ridiculously fast download speeds, and there are no limits on the number of simultaneous connections you can make.

Better yet, it’s registered in the British Virgin Islands and, of course, it’s pretty cheap! Our only issue, really, is that its recently-added kill switch has only been developed for the Windows operating system. This slightly defeats the objective for Mac, iOS, or Android users, so that’s worth keeping in mind if you’re considering Surfshark for your device.

6. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN service logo
  • Location: Sweden
  • Pricing: starts at $3.82/month
  • Features: great speeds, security, geo-unblocking, torrent support

If Astrill is too far beyond your budget range, you may wish to try PrivateVPN for a similarly speedy experience. The only risk here is that this VPN is registered in Sweden, a stickler of a country for internet surveillance and one of the 14 Eyes surveillance participants. While we acknowledge that this is slightly risky, it’s worth noting that PrivateVPN’s zero-logging policy seems to be totally reliable.

What makes this a good alternative for the best VPN for Taiwan is, as we mentioned, its download speeds. You may feel there’s no sense in squandering the fantastic internet connectivity Taiwan has, so investing in this relatively affordable VPN is a great way of ensuring your streamed and torrented content is always available in top-tier quality.

The positives definitely outweigh the negatives in our opinion.

7. TorGuard

TorGuard service logo
  • Location: USA
  • Pricing: starts at $4.99/month
  • Features: great speeds, security, geo-unblocking, torrent support

Rounding up the pack is TorGuard, another VPN that has the misfortune of being located in a 5 Eyes country (US). As with PrivateVPN, though, we believe TorGuard does more good than bad, and that it deserves its time in the sun.

With over three thousand servers in over fifty countries, TorGuard is second only to NordVPN in terms of the sheer size of its server fleet. It’s certainly one of the fastest of its kind, and while that doesn’t necessarily make it the best VPN for Taiwan, it’s certainly one of your best choices for torrenting.

Its average pricing also gets you a strict no-logs policy and a reliable kill switch, as well as OpenVPN, IKEv2, and Stealth VPN protocols, which is good value for money in our opinion. It does use Gmail for some of its email communications though, which is bad since Gmail sometimes has issues with privacy, but it can only really be compromised in advanced, complex situations.

Overall, it’s an above-average VPN that, in certain cases, could end up being the one you’re looking for.

And the best VPN for Taiwan is…

We’ve looked at the facts, and this is what we’ve come up with: NordVPN is the best VPN for Taiwan. Its combination of great pricing, geo-restricted access, and cybersecurity make this a web surfer’s dream. With Taiwan’s surveillance powers growing ever more invasive, there’s no better option than NordVPN for ensuring your data privacy.

Still not convinced? There’s no other VPN that is as cheap as Nord (unless you shop around Surfshark’s affiliates), but ExpressVPN, Astrill, Surfshark, and VyprVPN are all located outside the 5/9/14 Eyes alliances. And if its speeds you’re after, try Astrill or PrivateVPN; for overall leak protection, try Windscribe.
