Kodi users are always on the lookout for a reliable VPN service to use alongside the popular media player. And one of the more popular options out there is CyberGhost. So in this article we’re going to examine the viability of the CyberGhost Kodi setup, and see how it ranks as a VPN option.
Before going into our assessment of CyberGhost, let’s firstly take a look at why VPNs appeal to Kodi users. A CyberGhost Kodi setup will prevent your ISP and other interested organizations from snooping on your private surfing and monitoring your streaming activities. Similarly, it will make it much more difficult for hackers to access any of your private information.
Using a VPN will also make it possible to access a wide variety of geo-restricted content sources. Most importantly, a good VPN will allow you to enjoy the many third-party addons of Kodi, avoiding copyright infringement notices.
Okay, so that’s VPNs dealt with…what about CyberGhost? Well, the first thing to notice is that this is a highly successful company, founded by a combination of Romanian and German technology experts. CyberGhost stands outside of the notorious Five Eyes agreement and provides comprehensive VPN services for over 10 million users.
The network has 3,000 servers spread across 60 nations. It should be noted that torrents are not allowed on all CyberGhost servers, although there is good support for operating systems. Custom clients are available for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and more besides.
Obviously one of the key aspects of any VPN system running with Kodi will be its ability to unblock Netflix and other geo-blocked services. And we’re happy to report that CyberGhost does an excellent job in this department. Not only does it unblock some of the most popular media sites over several locations, but it also makes the process as painless as possible as well.
Many VPN providers effectively make users guess which servers will work with a particular system, which can be time consuming and annoying. Not CyberGhost. This VPN has initiated a nifty system whereby you provide your preferred country to the system, and it automatically selects the best server option for you. These are proffered in a neatly organized list, and clicking on the top option instantly unblocked Netflix when we used CyberGhost.
The VPN does a great job of unblocking media content across multiple providers. CyberGhost is fully compatible with, and will unblock, Hulu, Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, YouTube, YouTube Red, Sky, ZDF, TF1, CBS, MTV, Pandora, Spotify and Zattoo, and probably many others as well!
Encryption and privacy
CyberGhost’s encryption is perfectly adequate, delivering the 256-bit industry standard. We also liked the “Force HTTPS” feature included, which helps you unsafe HTTP sites. This just adds a little bit of extra protection when using CyberGhost with Kodi.
Privacy provisions are also very strong with CyberGhost, with the system keeping absolutely no logs on users. Despite much investigation of these claims, they have absolutely held firm so far; thus this is definitely a VPN provider that you can trust. Any traffic data, such as browsing history, traffic destination, data content, and search preferences are not monitored, recorded, logged or stored by CyberGhost, and the company offers a service level agreement in order to reassure users.
Measuring the performance of a VPN system can always be complex, particularly when it is attached to Kodi. And the results here were somewhat mixed. On the one hand, when CyberGhost worked well, its connection speeds were as good as any we have experienced. Conversely, some servers were clearly a little sluggish by comparison, and this seemed to be a region-based problem.
This meant that some services weren’t as accessible and usable as we would have liked, which was something of a disappointment. What we can say, though, is that the core European and North American audience for this system will be well catered for by the CyberGhost product.
Other features include support for seven simultaneous devices. Okay, it’s unlikely that you will run Kodi on 7 devices, but this does mean that you can run CyberGhost on many different platforms. This compares favorably with most other VPN services on the market. We also liked the web knowledgebase that is available, and there is an active CyberGhost community available to help you with any queries.
You may have gotten the impression that this is a strong system, and you’d be correct. However, it’s also more expensive than many rivals. At $12.99 per month, this is one of the priciest VPN systems that we’ve encountered, although signing up for longer plans sees the prices drop pretty sharply, to the equivalent of just $2.5/month over a three-year period. You can’t really argue with that for value, considering the quality that this system delivers.
All in all, a CyberGhost Kodi setup is pretty much the ideal VPN-media streaming system, especially for North American and European users. It is very fast, it unblocks all of the content that you could possibly wish to access, and the company that produces this VPN solution takes your privacy extremely seriously. This is one of the most robust and secure VPN systems imaginable, and CyberGhost makes the ideal companion for Kodi.
It is expensive, and CyberGhost perhaps doesn’t work quite as well for those in, for example, South America. Nevertheless, it’s a very good choice overall.
