Columbia Broadcasting System better known as CBS is a giant entertainment channel based in the United States. Having started in 1927, it has huge traction due to its enormous variety entertainment shows mostly movies series. It has both television and radio networks, with the latter being its inception. CBS is sometimes referred to as the Eye network owing to its iconic logo that depicts a wide-open eye.

CBS has some of the most popular shows, and these include The Big Bang Theory, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Elementary, Hawaii Five 0, 60 minutes, Rush Hour, Extant, Person of Interest, American Gothic, and many others. Sadly, being a USA-only channel, people in other parts of the world are somehow cut out from enjoying these shows.

Why is the CBS USA-only?

CBS operates only on its official website thus offering specifically streaming services to its customers. This comes at no charge but only to those living within the USA, not necessarily its citizens but residents. This is achieved by a technology known as geo-blocking.

Geo-blocking uses the geographical position to block someone from accessing a website. This typically means you that by monitoring your IP address, one can pinpoint your geographic location. The IP address, also known as the Internet Protocol address, is a unique numerical code that identifies your location whenever you request to join a server.

By applying this geoblocking technique, websites are able to limit their content to only those that they have allowed. For example, those outside the USA, when trying to login into the CBS website, will be greeted with the message that the “Content not available in your region” or something similar.

The reason CBS is only allowed in the USA has mostly to do with their broadcasting rights. Every country and region has different rules that govern the airing of content in these locations, and thus they reserve the right to issue or deny licenses to any broadcasting body.

However, this doesn’t mean that those outside the USA cannot enjoy CBS content. You do not have to relocate or make trips to the US to enjoy these rights, NO.

Just like they use geo-blocking to keep the rest of the world from having fun with their content, there is a way to get around this block. The trick is to use a VPN, a.k.a. a Virtual Private Network.

What is a VPN

Just like the name suggests, it’s software that helps you create a virtual private network whenever you are accessing a certain website through its servers. This helps in spoofing or masking your IP address, making these servers unable to read your actual geographical position.

VPN works by protecting servers from snooping or monitoring your activities. It is achieved by masking your location, where you can virtually appear to be logging in from a different place.

How to watch CBS outside the USA: use the best VPN providers

Best VPN for streaming

We highly recommend ExpressVPN. While it may cost you more than some of the rest, the experience you will get is almost unrivaled. With this VPN, you don’t have to worry about censorship, ISP monitoring, and online geographical restrictions. A good VPN establishes a secure tunnel with a server based in the USA. To do that, just connect to a US server of your choice. It will immediately replace your real IP address with a new US IP. Then you can watch whatever channel you wish on CBS.

Today’s VPN market is saturated with different providers. You will find it increasingly difficult to choose the best service.

Here are some aspects to consider when looking for a VPN:

  • Compatibility with the type of OS that you are using both on your computer and your phone
  • The functionalities of the VPN, how does it achieve its intended purpose, like the encryption technologies used
  • A reasonable price
  • A good money-back guarantee package
  • Streaming speed and consistency in connection
  • Number of servers across the US (the more, the better)
  • Ease of use
  • SmartDNS add-on
  • Tunneling protocols that allow swift streaming

There are some other factors to consider, but these are the most important. You want to make sure that you are streaming CBS at the perfect speeds while securing your identity on the internet. Streaming services in the US are popular for programming, but ISPs monitor most of them. That is why you need a safe channel to tap into the USA cyberspace.

Different VPNs come with different features, and it pays to be picky when selecting the one you want. Here’s a list of the top five VPNs that guarantee you safe streaming.

These are the best when it comes to bypassing the CBS blockers that are keeping anyone outside the USA from accessing their content.
What you need to do is to download either of these VPNs and create an account. Their services come at a cheaper cost with either monthly or annual subscription fee.

From our research and experience, ExpressVPN is one of the most reliable and stable. It’s easy to install and work with, and its subscription fee is affordable. You can enjoy its services for around $8.32 per month, and they have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

CyberGhost is another great VPN: for only $2.75 a month, you get to enjoy their services with a 45-day refund guarantee.

Steer clear of all the free VPN as they have been found to be less reliable or can easily be recognized by strong blockers. However, if you are willing to try out free VPN afterall, choose from our list of Best Free VPN services.

I needed to get CBS All Access earlier this year, so this would have been great information to have. Oh well! I’ll need it again for some streaming, and now I know to get an ExpressVPN trial at the same time.

  2. Zigel

I actually want to know how to watch cbs sports overseas. That’s what I am interested in and my brother would like to watch a few of their shows like Criminal Minds and NCIS. Is there any other way to do this without getting a VPN or is that the only way? Thanks, guys.

    1. RyanZ

If you and your brother want to watch CBS outside US you must get a VPN, and a good one. Why a good one? Because you can then also unlock Netflix US and your brother can see Criminal Minds and NCIS. Looking for a cbs live stream is just a waste of time. Just grab a VPN for 6-12 months so you pay less and you can then enjoy all the CBS you want. And if you want to do this for a longer time, why not consider getting a 3 year Nordvpn deal which will end up costing you a little over $100 for 3 years! I think that’s an insanely generous deal right there and that’s what I got. You won’t be sorry.

      1. Zigel

Yeah, thanks Ryan. It looks like paying a few bucks is the way to go here. My brother can see his shows and I can see my sports. I was also thinking about getting cbs all access outside us but then I think I would need to pay for it so we’ll see.

  3. Jonii

I wanted to watch CBS outside the USA because I like their shows but couldn’t find a good way to do it. Wanted to watch cbs online free but everything I found either didn’t work at all or it worked partially. I didn’t want to invest in a VPN but now I couldn’t live without it anymore. I took NordVPN for a test for a month to see how it would handle and I realized how good it is. I am now using it for torrenting, browsing, unlocking Netflix US, unlocking BBC iPlayer and so on and so forth. How could I leave without this vpn until now is beyond me. Needless to say that after that 1 month trial I just took the plunge and got the 3 year Nordvpn deal and I pay so little per month it’s not even funny. I now feel safe when I’m online no matter what I am doing.

I want to watch american tv overseas, and CBS in particular. I was hoping to watch cbs online free but it seems that won’t work and I might need to get a vpn. I’m torn between ExpressVPN and NORDVPN. After reading your comment, Jonii, I figured I would go the same route as you and try Nord for a month. I may even try Express for a month as well just to see the differences between the two of them.

  4. Jamie

CBS is no doubt one of my favorite channels! I can stay hooked to it for like ages! Seen all episodes of all seasons of The Big Bang Theory, my favorite show.

  5. VPNTrialJunkie

The Big Band Theory and Criminal Minds are two of my favorite shows! I usually watch the recordings later on because of work and other commitments at the time they are aired on TV. I did try using a VPN when I was travelling but the travel stress and fatigue was quite a bit so I did not enjoy watching the shows.

  6. Doris Williams

CBS really does offer a good variety of content for an old-school network. I like CBS so much that I have the CBS app (although I also get it for their Star Trek Discovery program). Still, the network’s use of geo-blocking is cheesy and prevents people outside the U.S. from accessing their content unless they know how to bypass it. Looks like these people have some options finally.

  7. RachelComet1482

ExpressVPN has been feeding my NCIS addiction for a while now. I can only get back to the states ever so often, so a lot of the times the places I end up (I travel a lot!) won’t let me binge watch NCIS like I used to at home. Fortuantely, I discovered how to bypass it. I definitely recommend ExpressVPN…you guys will thank me later!

  8. Desire Jodion
