A friend created a WhatsApp group and I downloaded the app onto my computer. When I tried to set it up, it told me to use my phone to scan a barcode (or a square pattern that has the same function). My landline and cell phone do not have this capability. I also had no success in getting meaningful technical support so I could use the app.
WhatsApp Messenger is not safe to use! Hackers have been able to get into Smartphones and steal information. They then threaten to “ruin” you and place you on the FBI’s most wanted list. This happened to my son. There must be somewhere that will investigate. BTW, this app originates in India.

the messages are stored in your google drive, that’s why to download the backup you need to specify not only your number but also your email.
The backup in drive is encrypted and if you change telephone number and forget to change number in whatsapp before re-installing it, and you have no access to your previous number, you won’t be able to download the backup.
