After 14 years, Reddit is still going strong with 230+ million monthly unique visitors. This social news aggregator and discussion platform is ranked as the 6th most popular website in the US (where more than half of all Reddit users reside). In addition to entertainment, Reddit is also great for user reviews of products, including VPNs. With this in mind, we looked at the opinions of people on Reddit about NordVPN.
- Excellent security
- Largest server list on the market
- Awesome for Netflix
- Good for torrenting
- Very easy to use
- Affordable prices
NordVPN’s presence on Reddit
Overall, NordVPN has a steady fanbase among Reddit users and is often ranked as one of the best VPN services (by Reddit) if not the best. While user reviews should be taken with a grain of salt, the Reddit community is active enough to offer an unbiased look at the pros and cons.
NordVPN has the largest unofficial subreddit (/r/nordvpn) with almost 7,000 members. That is ten times more than ExpressVPN has on its subreddit (/r/Express_VPN). Only the subreddit of Private Internet Access (PIA) comes close, which might have to do with PIA being one of the most popular VPNs overall.
NordVPN on /r/nordvpn
The most popular all-time subjects found on /r/nordvpn are about:
- A giveaway of 10 NordVPN subscriptions for winners of a meme competition aimed at European Union’s Article 13
- NordVPN no longer accepting PayPal
- PR news about NordVPN becoming the first commercial VPN with an independently audited “no-logs” policy
- NordVPN ownership and data-mining allegations
Other posts are mostly dedicated to troubleshooting. There don’t seem to be any noteworthy repeating problems.
NordVPN on /r/vpnreviews
Having just over 9,000 members, /r/vpnreviews is not a big subreddit. Nevertheless, it appears in second place when searching for NordVPN and is surely worth checking out.
After reading the Top posts and discounting the neutral ones, we found more negative than positive feelings towards the service. Perhaps this is not that surprising considering that complaining, in general, is a more popular activity than taking time to praise a product or service.
After switching to the view showing the top posts of all time, we found the first positions filled with complaints about other VPN tools, along with some neutral or positive NordVPN mentions. None of them attracted enough upvotes to be worth mentioning.
NordVPN vs Private Internet Access
Scrolling down, we found a 10-month old PIA vs NordVPN vs TorGuard comparison that had 52 upvotes. One user named PIA a cost-effective VPN, but that was before the prices went up.
This leads us to believe that a more in-depth PIA and NordVPN comparison would be in favor of NordVPN.
NordVPN vs ExpressVPN
To see how NordVPN fares against its toughest competitor, we also took a look at an ExpressVPN vs NordVPN Reddit thread that had garnered 56 upvotes. The collective opinion seems to overwhelmingly favor NordVPN, both for its low prices and its easy to use interface.
That said, one user mentioned the fact that many apps and websites seem to be able to easily detect NordVPN usage, while ExpressVPN manages to fly under the radar much more easily.

NordVPN vs IPVanish
While IPVanish has quite a following on its own subreddit, /r/vpnreviews seems to be quite skeptical regarding the NordVPN vs IPVanish Reddit battle. Even though we couldn’t find any direct comparison threads, dedicated Ipvanish and NordVPN user reviews can help paint an overall picture.
With NordVPN being highly praised almost across the board, IPVanish reviews by redditors mention considerable speed problems more than once.

This leads us to believe that NordVPN comes out stronger in this comparison.
NordVPN not as good as it was in 2018?
Scrolling down further, we saw an “Avoid Nordvpn” post with 41 upvotes. It stated that NordVPN had begun doing poorly, no longer unblocking Netflix, severely reducing speeds, providing terrible customer support, and leaking the IP address. Commenters mostly agreed about the speeds and the fact that NordVPN was doing better in 2018 than it’s doing now.
The redditors’ reasoning behind the negativity is related to increased affiliate marketing efforts from NordVPN, while not improving the service quality that much. The aforementioned ownership scandal also didn’t do much good. Then again, another 21-upvote review expresses satisfaction with the service.
NordVPN on /r/VPN
With over 74,000 members, /r/VPN is probably the biggest VPN-related community on Reddit. That’s why we were interested to see if users will have the same feelings towards NordVPN as we saw in previous subreddits. The results didn’t surprise us much.
The hottest topic was an ongoing thread of VPN recommendations, where NordVPN is presented as not the best option for torrenting and also as being involved “in some sort of lawsuit.” Older iterations mentioned the same issues of inconsistent speed when downloading.
Switching to the most relevant posts view gave us a list that doesn’t include the NordVPN keyword at the top, meaning the comments mentioning it were probably moderated. That left us with the final task – checking NordVPN mentions across the entire Reddit website.
NordVPN on random subreddits
The most popular posts are memes created for Article 13 or reasons too ingrained in the Reddit culture to be explained in this article. One thing is certain: the community didn’t accept those memes too well, as they seemed like something being pushed by NordVPN.
Going down, we found mostly the same posts from the subreddits mentioned above.
Our NordVPN Reddit review hasn’t found anything surprising – members often accused NordVPN of slow or inconsistent speeds, critiqued the service for the ownership scandal, and for its torrenting capabilities. We have all of that covered in our review or other blog posts, concluding that, in the end, NordVPN is still one of the top-two services available.
