What others say about Surfshark VPN:

SurfShark might not be a market leader at the moment in the VPN domain, but it doesn’t falter on any front when compared to any such Best VPN service in the industry.

It’s an incredibly fast VPN ideal for streaming, online gaming, torrenting, and other data-heavy operations.

Aside from less than stellar speeds, this VPN has the power to keep your private data truly private. As such, it can be a worthy tool in your arsenal.

Surfshark is one of the new entries in the world of online privacy. Despite that, this prodigal VPN is already making waves due to its impressive features and powerful performance.

What is Surfshark VPN

Surfshark VPN is among the very best VPN providers. As their CTO Magnus Steinber said, “Our VPN will ensure online privacy for your whole family – simple and intuitive on the outside with a robust security mechanism inside.” This statement is backed by their simple and user-friendly app interface and the highest level of security.

What is more, Surfshark has a clean reputation and intends to keep it that way. They are located in the British Virgin Islands, making them susceptible to no data retention laws. This allows them not only to claim having a “no-logs” policy but actually to store no logs. Also, Surfshark is confident enough to call an independent audit upon themselves.

As for now, we can say that Surfshark VPN is among the hottest deals in 2020.

Where Surfshark VPN is based and why it is important

The notion of trust is important for any VPN that builds a long-term relationship with its users. And those companies that help their clients remain anonymous are reluctant to share much info about themselves as well. But there’s a good reason for that. For example, if the real company location is hidden, it’s much harder to make it hand over its data.

The location itself is important as some jurisdictions offer privacy-friendly laws when it comes to data retention or copyright. Another reason that is often left unmentioned but always impacts the top-level decision making is the tax rates.

Surfshark VPN location: British Virgin Islands (BVI)

The British Virgin Islands is a great offshore VPN location, but there is also a caveat here. On the one hand, there are no data retention laws in the BVI, and it doesn’t belong to the Fourteen Eyes country groups. This allows Surfshark to offer a Privacy Policy that’s in line with users’ needs. Finally, the BVI has no corporate or income tax which we think has had some impact in choosing this location.

The caveat we’ve mentioned earlier is that these islands are named “British” for a reason. While Surfshark will probably not agree, we believe that the UK can still have a say if there’s something they would really love to know about Surfshark’s users.

Available plans and pricing

Surfshark has some of the best prices in the VPN industry. But what helps Surfshark really stand out is their long-term plans. While many competitors have a 12-month plan as the longest timewise, Surfshark’s offerings fall between the 1-month and 2-year deals. The latter is quite a catch – you can get it for as low as $1.99/month.

While Surfshark VPN lacks a free trial for Windows and Linux, more and more competitors are canceling these deals altogether. What’s more, macOS, iOS, and Android users get to try the app for a total of 7 days. But in the end, a solid 30-day money-back guarantee makes Surfshark VPN look respectful to those clients who change their minds.

And those who decide to stay with Surfshark will benefit from many payment options. In addition to the traditional credit cards, you can also use PayPal, Google Pay, Amazon Pay, and cryptocurrencies, among other methods. We are particularly happy about the last one because many VPN services are still reluctant to offer truly anonymous payment options.

Platforms Surfshark VPN supports

Surfshark offers dedicated apps for the most popular Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS platforms. In addition to that, there are dedicated apps for Android TV, and Amazon Fire TV & Fire Stick. You can also use Smart DNS to connect your smart TV or game console. Those looking to protect their browsing experience only will be glad to learn about the Chrome and Firefox extensions.

The platforms supported by Surfshark don’t end with the dedicated apps. There are also screenshot-laden tutorials on manually configuring AsusWRT, DD-WRT, and Tomato routers to be used with the VPN. At the moment Surfshark VPN is compatible with all routers that support OpenVPN as a “Client.”

Surfshark VPN for streaming, torrenting, and China

While the whole point of a VPN is to provide security and privacy for its user, there’s not much point in using it if you cannot get some fun out of it. Therefore no VPN provider will get the highest score if it doesn’t allow torrenting or cannot unblock Netflix. Being able to avoid the censorship of the Great Firewall of China is also important because it also shows the ability to provide free internet access in other countries that restrict that.

When it comes to streaming geo-blocked content, Surfshark VPN is your man. This didn’t surprise us that much because up until recently this service was flying not only under the Netflix’s but also everyone’s radar.

We were able to access Netflix libraries in the US, Canada, the UK, and Japan. The connection speed was also good enough to stream in UHD (4K) quality most of the time.

Streaming options with Surfshark VPN don’t end with Netflix. It’s also good for Kodi and the BBC iPlayer, at least at the time of this writing. However, only time will tell if Surfshark manages to battle geo-blocking successfully while its presence continues to grow.

Torrenting and P2P

Surfshark VPN has no problem with you torrenting. Therefore it neither block nor throttles your P2P connections. In general, speed and security are also good.

Windows app users also benefit from the kill switch, and we hope this feature will be added for Apple and Linux users soon. As for the Android, starting from the 7.0 version, you can use the always-on VPN native app that acts like an external kill switch.

Does Surfshark VPN work in China?

Surfshark VPN can be used in China successfully, but the key question is how long this will last. The concern here is that Surfshark uses OpenVPN and IKEv2/IPsec protocols, and the former is often blocked because China uses Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to see which encrypted traffic comes from a VPN. This way Chinese ISPs can easily block your connection in case of OpenVPN usage.

Luckily, Surfshark has developed its Camouflage and NoBorders modes. They act as a stealth protocol, switching to the Open VPN with XOR patch and unblocking the restricted content in countries like China.
