What others say about Surfshark VPN:
“ SurfShark might not be a market leader at the moment in the VPN domain, but it doesn’t falter on any front when compared to any such Best VPN service in the industry. “
“ It’s an incredibly fast VPN ideal for streaming, online gaming, torrenting, and other data-heavy operations. “
“ Aside from less than stellar speeds, this VPN has the power to keep your private data truly private. As such, it can be a worthy tool in your arsenal. “
“ Surfshark is one of the new entries in the world of online privacy. Despite that, this prodigal VPN is already making waves due to its impressive features and powerful performance. “
What is Surfshark VPN
Surfshark VPN is a fairly new player in the virtual private network arena, but it’s sure stirring the waters.
“Surfshark is ahead of the curve in technological advancement, but your experience is the number one priority. Our VPN will ensure online privacy for your whole family – simple and intuitive on the outside with a robust security mechanism inside. Enjoy the full richness of the borderless internet, freely and safely on all your devices,” a statement by their CTO Magnus Steinberg is backed by their simple and user-friendly app interface and the highest level of security.
The intentions of Surshark are serious. Not a long time ago they had only 100 servers in 14 countries. A few months passed, and now it’s 500+ in 50 countries, making the already fast service even faster.
What is more, Surfshark has a clean reputation and intends keep it that way. They are located in the British Virgin Islands, making them susceptible to no data retention laws. This allows them not only to claim having a “no-logs” policy but to actually store no logs. Also, Surfshark is confident enough to call an independent audit upon themselves.
While TunnelBear VPN was the pioneer of this activity in 2017, there weren’t many providers that followed them. And while Surfshark has put only their browser extensions to the test, that’s still much more than most of its competitors have done to ensure they’re doing the best they can. We believe that Surfshark will do an audit for its apps in the future. As for now, we can say that this provider looks promising and should be one of the hottest deals in 2019.
Surfshark VPN Facts
Where Surfshark VPN is based and why it is important
The notion of trust is important for any VPN that builds a long-term relationship with its users. And those companies that help their clients remain anonymous are reluctant to share much info about themselves as well. But there’s a good reason for that. For example, if the real company location is hidden, it’s much harder to make it hand over its data.
The location itself is important as some jurisdictions offer privacy-friendly laws when it comes to data retention or copyright. Another reason that is often left unmentioned but always impacts the top-level decision making is the tax rates.
Surfshark VPN location: British Virgin Islands (BVI)
The caveat we’ve mentioned earlier is that these islands are named “British” for a reason. While Surfshark will probably not agree, we believe that the UK can still have a say if there’s something they would really love to know about Surfshark’s users.
What does a Surfshark VPN location say?
Not part of 5/9/14 Eyes intelligence alliance
No data retention laws
Some concern over influence of United Kingdom
Available plans and pricing
With its pricing plans, Surfshark ends somewhere at the mid-point, neither very high nor very low. But what helps Surfshark really standout is their long-term plans. While many competitors have a 12-month plan as the longest timewise, Surfshark’s offerings fall between the 1-month and 2-year deals. The latter is quite a catch — you can get it for as low as $1.99/month from affiliates or as a special offer.
While Surfshark VPN lacks a free trial, more and more competitors are also canceling these deals. Therefore you cannot say they’re going against the grain here. And offering a solid 30-day money-back guarantee makes them look respectful to those clients who change their mind.
And those who decide to stay with Surfshark will benefit from many payment options. In addition to the traditional credit cards, you can also use PayPal, AliPay, and cryptocurrencies. We are particularly happy about the last one because many VPN services are still reluctant to offer truly anonymous payment options.

Platforms Surfshark VPN supports
Surfshark offers dedicated apps for the most popular Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS platforms. In addition to that, Amazon Fire TV and Linux apps are present as well. Those looking to protect their browsing experience only will be glad about the Chrome and Firefox extensions.
The platforms supported by Surfshark don’t end with the dedicated apps. There are also screenshot-laden tutorials on manually configuring routers to be used with the VPN. At the moment of writing this article, Surfshark VPN supported AsusWRT, DD-WRT, Tomato, Netgear, TP-Link, and Linksys hardware.
Surfshark VPN for streaming, torrenting, and China
While the whole point of a VPN is to provide security and privacy for its user, there’s not much point in using it if you cannot get some fun out of it. Therefore no VPN provider will get the highest score if it doesn’t allow torrenting or cannot unblock Netflix. Being able to avoid the censorship of the Great Firewall of China is also important because it also shows the ability to provide free internet access in other countries that restrict that.
When it comes to streaming geo-blocked content, Surfshark VPN is your man. This didn’t surprise us that much because up until recently this service was flying not only under the Netflix’s but also everyone’s radar.
We were able to access Netflix libraries in the US, Canada, the UK, and Japan. The connection speed was also good enough to stream in UHD (4K) quality most of the time.
Streaming options with Surfshark VPN don’t end with Netflix. It’s also good for Kodi and the BBC iPlayer, at least at the time of this writing. However, only time will tell if Surfshark manages to battle geo-blocking successfully while its presence continues to grow.
Torrenting and P2P
Surfshark VPN has no problem with you torrenting. Therefore it neither block nor throttles your P2P connections. In general, speed and security are also good.
Windows app users also benefit from the kill switch, and we hope this feature will be added for Apple and Linux users soon. As for Android, starting from the 7.0 version, you can use the always-on VPN native app that acts like an external kill switch.
Does Surfshark VPN work in China?
While in theory Surfshark VPN can be used in China successfully, the key question is how long this will last. The concern here is that Surfshark uses OpenVPN and IKEv2 only, and the former is often blocked because China uses Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) to see which encrypted traffic comes from a VPN. This way Chinese ISPs can easily block your connection in case of OpenVPN usage.
In the worst case scenario, you can use your 30-day money-back guarantee if Surfshark VPN doesn’t work in China. But as it’s been less than a year since this provider started offering VPN services, only time will tell how successful Surfshark will be battling internet censorship across the world.
