What is Turbo VPN

Turbo VPN is a popular mobile-only VPN app from the Singaporean company Innovative Connecting. It has 3 sister products on the Google Play Store – VPN Master, VPN Proxy Master Pro, and VPN Proxy Master Lite – and 1 on the App Store – VPN Sofast – Mymobilesecure. Like all of these, Turbo VPN is an ad-funded free service with a paid version that offers some additional features.

The free version of Turbo VPN is its main selling proposition. Aside from that, it is a tool that suffers from a significant lack of security and utility, with the paid version being simply too expensive. Due to the reliance of Turbo VPN on ads, it is not a good choice for the privacy-minded – the service will not shy away from sharing user data with various third-parties for advertising and law enforcement purposes.

Where Turbo VPN is based and why it’s important

Turbo VPN seems to be operated out of Singapore, which can be described as an authoritarian democracy with a strong grip on the internet. Privacy-wise, Singapore isn’t nearly as bad as some of the other states on the Far East – most notably China – yet it comes with its own set of issues.

Firstly, Singapore is a partner state of the 14 Eyes surveillance alliance. This means data gathered by Singaporean intelligence can easily make its way to agencies in other member states (USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, etc.).

Secondly, Singapore is a mass surveillance state – the government has access to all internet traffic and telecommunications. While it’s not clear how much access the government has to VPN-collected data, the situation is obviously not ideal.

Turbo VPN doesn’t hide the fact that they collect a lot of data on their users.

Available plans and pricing

Turbo VPN is primarily a free VPN service, funded through advertising. However, there are 2 paid plans available as well – an $11.99 monthly plan and a significantly cheaper $2.99/month annual plan. If you opt for the paid plans, you’ll gain access to Turbo VPN’s VIP servers, which will increase speeds and unblock more content.

Since Turbo VPN is only available via the Google Play Store or the App Store, payment options are limited. There’s no anonymous option available, such as crypto, cash, or even PayPal – not much of a surprise considering the developers’ quantity-over-quality approach.

First-time Turbo VPN users can take advantage of the 7-day free trial to help decide whether the price is worth it. We’d be hard-pressed to find a reason why it might be.

Using Turbo VPN: streaming, torrenting, and China

Streaming

For a free VPN service, Turbo VPN is not bad for streaming, albeit its ability to unblock streaming platforms like Netflix or Hulu is inconsistent. If you want to use the app for some of the bigger entertainment platforms, you’re likely going to have to buy the premium version. In the end, the money is probably not worth it – there are way better services for streaming than Turbo VPN.

Torrenting

torrenting

P2P traffic, including torrent traffic, is allowed on the Turbo VPN network. It’s not a bad fit either – the speeds are not fantastic, but decent enough, and the Android OS has a native kill switch. With that said, Turbo VPN is not available on Windows or macOS, which reduces the relevance of support for torrenting.

Turbo VPN in China

This VPN service simply doesn’t work in China – this is openly stated in the Turbo VPN Google Play app listing. Users can still rely on the app in other countries where online freedoms are restricted, although we wouldn’t recommend it.
