Wherever you are in the world, a virtual private network (VPN) is the essential tool for protecting your online security and privacy. This especially true for internet users in Sri Lanka who have seen their internet freedom severely violated over the past year.
With a good VPN, internet restrictions can be a thing of the past. Of course, there are thousands of these providers available and it can be difficult to find a truly great one.

1. NordVPN
Panama
7400

-
Unbeatable in terms of security and privacy
-
NordLynx protocol for the best speeds without sacrificing security
-
SmartPlay to help you bypass the geo-blocks
-
No router app
NordVPN is one of the market leaders of the cybersecurity industry, so much so that Liverpool F.C. have entrusted it as their official cybersecurity partner. But is it the best VPN for Sri Lanka?
Well, for starters, NordVPN is registered in Panama, a country free from invasive data retention laws. As well as this, the VPN adheres to a strict no-logging policy, a practice that has been verified through independent auditors.
NordVPN’s encryption software lives up to the company’s claim of “military-grade;” the AES-256-bit encryption model is the same used by the US government, the NSA, and NASA. Quite simply, it is unhackable.
This is all to say that when you’re connected to one of NordVPN’s servers – and you have, oh, five thousand plus to choose from – there is practically zero chance the Sri Lankan authorities can track you through the e-NIC Project (or any other method).
Amazingly, as high-tech as this sounds, a subscription to NordVPN will not break the bank; not only is it one of the best providers on the market, it’s also one of the cheapest!

2. Surfshark VPN
Netherlands
3200
100
405 Mbps
-
Packed with solid security features
-
Smart DNS for smooth geo-unblocking
-
Unlimited simultaneous connections
-
Weak self-help support section
Surfshark VPN is another VPN that, like Nord, is way less expensive than it ought to be. It’s registered in the British Virgin Islands which is as good as Panama for internet freedom, and its encryption software is equally as secure as the one Nord uses.
However, there’s one distinction: Nord uses AES-256-CBC, whereas Surfshark uses the much faster AES-256-GCM. This gives it the edge over Nord’s connection speeds which, to be honest, aren’t too shabby in the first place.
Surfshark also allows for unlimited simultaneous connections, which means that one account costing under $2 per month can secure every device in your family.
Really, the only drawback is that its server list is a fraction of what Nord offers. Either way, Surfshark’s 800-strong server fleet is far better than most VPN providers offer, and it thus remains one of the best VPN for Sri Lanka.

3. VyprVPN
Switzerland
700
64
357 Mbps
-
Excellent security
-
Super fast
-
Unblocks Netflix and other platforms
-
No anonymous payments
VyprVPN is one of the most unique options on this list. Its support for the custom-made Chameleon protocol allows it to prevent ISP throttling and blocking.
In other words, your download speeds will never be impacted throughout your subscription period. This is especially good news seeing as the speeds offered by VyprVPN in the first place are too good to squander.
As well as this, VyprVPN also excels in its privacy and security detail. Just like Proton VPN, it’s registered in Switzerland, which places it well outside the jurisdiction of the Fourteen Eyes alliance.
Finally, not only does it use military-grade security like other other options, but it also uses a private DNS server to fully safeguard you from the risk of your personal information getting out.

4. ExpressVPN
British Virgin Islands (BVI)
3000
105
440 Mbps
-
Bulletproof security features
-
Super fast
-
Perfect for streaming, gaming, and torrenting
-
Very expensive
ExpressVPN is considerably more expensive than the options we’ve covered thus far, but that doesn’t prevent it from being one of the best VPNs for Sri Lanka.
If anything, its high-end pricing is deserved after building such a great reputation over the years. Furthermore, just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it’s reserved for VPN experts, either.
ExpressVPN prides itself on being accessible. With servers in over ninety countries, it has possibly the biggest reach on the market. It also offers more custom apps and browser extensions than just about anything we’ve ever seen.
ExpressVPN is also just as secure as NordVPN or Surfshark (although it supports AES-256-CBC instead of Surfshark’s -GCM model), and with a registry in the BVI, you can count on this VPN to help you browse anonymously, privately, and safely.

5. Proton VPN
Switzerland
9900
117
423 Mbps
-
Amazing security credentials
-
Plus version will get you into Netflix and Hulu
-
Has a great Free version
-
Average speeds
Proton VPN is developed by researchers at CERN and MIT, the same folks behind ProtonMail. Who could knock together a powerful piece of cybersecurity if not for a group of scientists?
Improbably, one of their aims was to create a free VPN provider that works properly. This is a risky proposition given the shambolic state of most free VPN apps.
However, we’re happy to report that the free version of Proton VPN is actually good! This makes it a great option if you’re strapped for cash, and especially if you only require the added security a VPN brings.
The paid-for versions are slightly more expensive than the market average, but they provide faster server connectivity and additional security measures (e.g. multi-hop, Tor over VPN, etc.).
Whichever option you go for, though, the fact remains that Proton VPN is as secure as anything on this list, and its Swiss registry makes it free from any threat of government interference. We have no problem whatsoever with calling it one of the best VPN for Sri Lanka.

Is it safe to use a VPN in Sri Lanka?
Following the 2018 anti-Muslim riots, the Sri Lankan authorities enforced harsh regulations on internet access across the island. This included a week-long block of major social media platforms that prevented many users from letting their family know they were safe.
As well as this, the e-NIC Project is a massive invasion of online privacy. With your national identity cards being stored on a central database and your NI number being required to access public wifi, there is a strong chance the authorities are using this information to monitor your online activity.
