Best VPN for Torrenting in 2024

Best VPN for torrenting

Torrenting is a great way to download large files, including films, TV shows, music albums, and video games. This practice isn’t popular with parties interested in copyright protection, though. Therefore, you can even get in trouble if you’re caught downloading pirated material.

Another aspect of P2P file-sharing many users need to remember is how unsafe it is. Anyone getting the same torrent can see your IP address and the associated browsing history. And this data could be used against you.

That is unless you’re utilizing the best VPN for torrenting to hide your IP address and online activities from prying eyes. These tools protect your privacy when you fire up your torrent client by encrypting all internet traffic. And once you become untraceable, you’re free from many dangers.

Why do you need a VPN for torrenting

While we don’t condone piracy, we prefer that our readers and torrenters stay safe. P2P file sharing is quite dangerous as it exposes your actions to third parties. So, hackers can use it to their advantage and steal your precious information. However, that won’t be an issue with the best VPN, as it encrypts your data and hides your IP address.

Nevertheless, you can protect your anonymity and P2P efforts with the best VPN for torrenting according to Reddit. That way, no one, except for you, will know about your internet ventures.

Lastly, torrenting is risky if you don’t take extra precautions. For example, if you get caught downloading copyrighted P2P content, you may get fined or, worst-case scenario, jailed. It’s a serious crime in some countries, and the copyright holders and ISPs won’t hesitate to punish pirates no matter the circumstances. Luckily, a P2P-friendly VPN will hide any information about you, so you won’t have to worry about it as much.

How we made this list of VPNs for torrenting

When picking the best VPN for torrenting, we consider various privacy and security features that would be useful when connecting to P2P networks. The following aspects are the most important, so the best-performing torrent VPNs which excel in them get ranked higher:

  • Torrenting policy. When connected to a VPN, downloading files consumes a lot of the provider’s bandwidth, especially if many users do that simultaneously. Because of this, P2P is often restricted or disabled altogether. The torrenting VPN of your choice should allow file sharing on its network without limits. And it’s even better if it has dedicated servers for that.
  • Performance. Speed is crucial for torrenters – the VPN should maintain fast speeds or even accelerate downloads if your ISP previously throttled you. Check out the fastest VPNs and compare them with other providers.
  • Logging. The provider should not keep any logs or collect identifiable data about its users. Many services have their log policies detailed in their privacy policies. We suggest picking a VPN with a strict zero-logs policy based outside the Fourteen Eyes jurisdiction.
  • Security. Sharing content via torrent clients exposes your IP address to anyone who wants to see it and potentially exploit it. To prevent this, a VPN should have robust security features, AES-256 encryption, and solid IP/DNS leak protection. The handiest tool that any VPN should offer includes a kill switch.
  • Value. The price for the VPN subscription should be adequate for the number of features you’re getting. Thus, avoid providers trying to sell you an average or sub-par product for a high price. Plus, a top-tier VPN should include split tunneling, a SOCKS5 proxy, Stealth VPN.

How to use a VPN while torrenting

Using a VPN for torrenting is simple and easy. After you download it, you just have to set it up before you begin sharing files via P2P.

NordVPN settings and map

Here’s a short guide on how to use a torrenting VPN:

  1. Subscribe to a reputable VPN. Our top choice is NordVPN, currently available for 67% off
  2. Install the software and connect to a P2P server
  3. Download the torrent client of your choice
  4. Start downloading the files you want!

Torrent endlessly with NordVPN

Am I exposed when torrenting without a VPN?

Yes, torrenting without a VPN leaves you exposed to prying eyes. When torrenting, you can get caught very quickly by your ISP. Your speeds might get throttled if you’re using too much bandwidth. In some cases, all P2P traffic can get disabled.

NordVPN Unprotected Devices

When using public trackers, your IP address can be seen by all users exchanging the files. This means the copyright holder can go to the same tracker, find your IP and contact your ISP, which will send you a notice. It’s not secret information – pretty much everyone can spy on you through tracking websites if they know your IP address.

Since it’s out in the open, hacking attempts on you aren’t out of the question either. In all cases, using a trusted VPN is much safer as it hides all crucial information from third parties. You’ll also feel and be more secure if you practice secure torrenting.

Torrent safely with NordVPN

Yes, it’s legal to torrent with VPNs, except in countries where these activities are banned. This legality issue has to do more with what’s being shared rather than the technology itself. Open-source and public-domain content won’t land you in hot water, but sharing copyrighted material is prohibited.

While some countries ignore torrenters or even allow torrenting for personal use, others impose legal and financial sanctions. For example, in the US, where P2P sharing is considered a civil offense, you have to pay legal fees for each file you share. The fines range from $200 to $150,000. In Germany, you’ll be requested to pay between 500 and 1,500 Euros.

NordVPN together with torrent client

Torrenting is a criminal offense in a few countries, like Sweden, Russia, and the UK. Hence you’re likely to face criminal prosecution. For instance, in Sweden, torrenting may cost you a solid amount of money and up to two years in prison. It’s not as bad as in the UK, where you may be sent to jail for a decade.

While legal and financial consequences vary from country to country, the message is clear – torrenting without a VPN is expensive and, in some cases, detrimental to your legal reputation. There is a way you can avoid such issues, though. Invest in the best P2P VPN to keep you safe and anonymous while downloading content.

It’s also recommended to only share files while being connected to countries where torrenting is safe.

What’s the best VPN server location for torrenting?

When it comes to torrent-friendly locations, you should opt for countries that permit torrenting for personal use. Another viable option is those that don’t take any legal actions against torrenters. For a seamless downloading experience, it’s advised to use the fastest VPNs in the market, such as NordVPN. So, the best VPN countries for torrenting:

  • Switzerland. One of the most privacy-friendly locations. Here, downloading copyrighted content for personal use is legal if you don’t intend to sell it for profit. Uploading such content is illegal, though.
  • Mexico. File-sharing isn’t monitored in any official capacity, making it an excellent country for P2P.
  • Poland. Users are free to download files for personal use. Of course, selling them for profit is illegal.
  • Spain. Torrenting is legal and allowed as long as you’re not selling copyrighted material.
  • Netherlands. Despite a regulation change in 2017, downloading files for personal use is safe. Only sharing them to make a profit is prohibited.

You should also be aware of locations where torrenting is strictly forbidden or countries where VPNs are banned. The authorities shut down torrenting sites in these locations, and those who attempt to share files via P2P can receive fines. Thus, the worst countries for torrenting:

Countries where torrent websites are shut downCountries where downloading illegal content is finedCountries where torrent websites are shut down
Australia, Portugal, Italy, Latvia, China, Malaysia, South AfricaGermany, the US, Finland, Japan, the UAEFrance, the UK, Russia, Sweden

Can I use free VPNs for torrenting?

There are a few reliable free torrent VPNs. However, the majority of costless services have more flaws than upsides. Here’s what you’ll most likely get if you decide to use a free VPN for P2P:

  • Strict data caps. Most free VPNs impose strict data limits on their users as massive simultaneous downloads severely impact their networks. Worst case scenario, they don’t even allow P2P traffic despite advertising otherwise.
  • Surveillance. These providers have to stay afloat somehow – they do it by logging your data and selling it to third parties, showing ads, and even injecting malware.
  • Ad-trackers. Another way they manage to run free services is by secretly placing trackers in their VPN clients. These gather info about you and tailor advertisements according to your profile.
  • Speed throttling. And then there are performance issues – free VPNs are generally very slow because millions of people use their limited servers simultaneously. Your downloads will simply take too long.

These issues defeat the purpose of using a VPN for P2P file sharing. You’d be better off opting for the best cheap VPN for torrenting. Of course, not all providers are bad to the bone – you’ll be surprised to find a few trustworthy ones. Some of the trustworthy, best VPN for torrenting free include:

  • Ivacy VPN. The free version offers full P2P support with unlimited data. Also, you get 1 server in The Netherlands. However. While it may not be reliable with unblocking streaming websites, it’s alright for torrenting.
  • Hide Me VPN. You get 8 server locations, 10GB/month, Stealth Guard, SOCKS5 proxies, and split tunneling.
  • Windscribe. The free version includes 2GB/month, 11 server locations, and the ability to unblock Netflix and BBC iPlayer. You can connect an unlimited number of devices.

Another suitable option is going for premium free trial VPNs. They are more reliable, faster, and won’t compromise your safety. Plus, you’ll get loads of nifty features that will help you get your torrent files faster. And once one trial ends, switch providers.

VPNs you should avoid

Some VPN services shouldn’t be touched with a ten-foot pole. These include but are not limited to:

  • Betternet. Was caught injecting malware and user trackers into its applications. Offers unreliable tools and doesn’t include such an essential feature as a kill switch. Collects extensive logs about its users.
  • VPNGate. The network works on a P2P principle, where volunteers offer their computers as connection points. Has no kill switch or leak protection, and the connections are unreliable to a fault. Collects information about your every action and will disclose it to government institutions if they receive a data request.
  • Hola VPN. Has no kill switch, leak protection, or even basic encryption, making it a proxy service instead of a VPN. Your idle bandwidth will be allocated to other users. Monitors all activity and will share this data with authorities if the provider deems it necessary.

I read the PrivateVPN terms of service, claims if you use their service, it automatically disqualifies any refund. So no 30 day money back trial? Nordvpn terms actually spells out their 30 day trial.

Hello there. It says here that the PrivateVPN money-back guarantee applies to new customers who give a reason for wanting a refund and don’t wait until the very last day.

I bought a two year deal with surfshark. They started dropping connection at least once a week, AFTER the trial period. I had to switch to p2p software that binds to adapter because kill switch doesn’t work on dropped connections. At least once a month I was logged out of software completely. Finally, after ONLY SIX MONTHS OF SERVICE, they forced an upgrade, but I was not allowed to download it. I contact surfshark numerous times over the week, but they ignored me. GAVE UP!

Ethan Payne March 14, 2022 at 8:15 am

Greetings, Sparks. I’m sorry that you had an unpleasant experience with Surfshark. Did you switch to a different VPN provider? If so, are you having better results with it?

  3. Derek James April 23, 2020 at 8:13 am

torrenting without vpn is impossible in my country, so it’s a huge thanks for good suggestions!

  4. Sarah March 3, 2020 at 2:09 pm

Quite relevant TOP. I personally use SurfShark and very happy about it.

  5. Codo October 29, 2019 at 9:31 pm

I don’t understand why some people love PIA so much. I’m not saying it’s not a decent VPN that will protect you but to compare it with Nord, ExpressVPN or CyberGhost is just weird. These 3 (and others) are at least 1 class above PIA.

  6. Saul October 26, 2019 at 7:38 pm

I didn’t know much about CyberGhost or how it protects anonymity but after reading this I am much more inclined to give them a go. They seem like a great alternative to the top 2 vpns.

  7. Adam September 23, 2019 at 6:13 pm

Now a days it is very hard to surf the web anonymously and to protect your identity. Therefore, I just gave a try to ExpressVPN and I am amazed by the services and security level they offer. I would request you to please brief me further about the router app. Thanks!

  8. Dominic Freppa August 19, 2019 at 6:12 pm

When it comes to anonymity, for torrenting purposes, I would go with ExpressVPN. It may seem a bit expensive for people but believe me that it is so well worth it! I wouldn’t use anything else and I’ve used a few of them; nothing compares to Express. Once you try them for a few days you will see the difference between them and anyone else. Just get a month with them, test them out and then compare them with any other VPN: NordVPN, Ivacy, Astrill, IpVanish, Cyberghost, etc. I’m telling you, nothing is as good as they are. The speeds are amazing no matter where you are. They have plenty of servers, kill switch, and anything else you will need.

  9. Jack L August 1, 2019 at 5:25 pm

On this field I would say NordVPN is the best. It allows torrenting anonymously very easily. It’s one of the best regarding privacy and security and it’s so cheap ! I’ve tried it once and since I justo keep on loving it. Plus it’s multi-plateform.

  10. 6asDesmond78 August 1, 2019 at 8:46 am

I switched from NordVPN to ExpressVPN lately, because of its speed for torrenting purpose and I think while both Nord and Express ensure your anonimity and protect you are online, I think the speed matters to me, which is why I decided to make the switch.

  11. Haylom Fesahaye July 31, 2019 at 5:03 pm

ExpressVPN is actually the best for torrenting anonymously , anyone having problems should contact support before posting a negative review as they will help with all problems and have you up and running in a very short time , I had a problem logging on when using a public WIFI and the techs resolved the problem in a few minutes.

  12. Finn89 July 29, 2019 at 5:04 pm

In todays digital world, one has to be extra careful and cautious when torrenting stuff. A lot of countries have strict policies in place and they have harsh penalties in case of violations.

  13. Leia July 27, 2019 at 1:17 pm

I like a VPN that allows torrenting without making too much of a fuss about it. There are some that don’t allow it or that make it sound like such a big deal and I dislike that. I like NordVPN and also CyberGhost.

  14. Nikita Menon July 27, 2019 at 7:45 am

NordVPN is the best among all the options that I have used so far! It serves great to protect your anonimity while torrenting.

  15. Ryan Wallace July 26, 2019 at 2:19 pm

Express is great for torrenting, anonymity and it’s one of the most secure out there. Its only drawback is that its expensive for me so I have opted to use a great alternative which is NordVPN of $2.99/month. I think Nord has faster and better servers for torrenting too
One question though, What does a router app do? Why is that a con in your review?

    1. avatar

Hi, Ryan, a router app allows you to set up a VPN on your router to protect your entire network and essentially get the benefits of a VPN on all of your devices at once, without paying for multiple subscriptions. It’s a great perk for any VPN to have and we hope that NordVPN implements this feature one day as well.

I use torrent a lot I would say I’m a torrent addicted. Basically, I’m torrenting daily for movies books and other cool stuff. For me, torrent is one of the best apps for downloading movies and stuff. Finding the best VPN service is very important for me, so this post was very helpful.

From what I can tell, NordVPN is awesome for torrenting considering the price (especially on 3 year plans). If they add a router app then they may become unbeatable. I need to select a good VPN for downloading anonymously all sorts of things 😉 and staying safe while doing it and Nord seems like a good choice.
