FlixTor is great, but it has already disappeared once. Between November of 2018 and January of 2019, the website was down to the dismay of its loyal fanbase. Immediately, a host of useless fake “FlixTors” popped up, stealing personal data, infecting devices with malware, and causing endless frustration.

An overwhelming majority of “free streaming” websites out there are worthless at best and dangerous at worst. Fortunately, there are legitimate FlixTor alternatives out there. Some of these are just as good or even better, depending on what you’re looking for. We list the best ones in this article.

7 functional FlixTor alternatives

Free streaming websites come in many shapes. Some merely embed content available elsewhere (like FlixTor), while others are essentially BitTorrent video players (like Popcorn Time). Each type has its innate risks and benefits – make sure you know them before feasting your eyes on great content.

1. Popcorn Time

Popcorn TV

  • Restrictions: Doesn’t work in the UK
  • Content: Varied, comparable to FlixTor
  • Platforms: Windows, macOS, Android, Linux
  • Risk: High
  • Type: BitTorrent client

Popcorn Time is a very popular and completely free streaming solution with a lot of variety. However, it’s different from FlixTor in a few important ways. First of all, you’ll need to download the dedicated app to use it (available for Windows, macOS, Android, and Linux). Secondly, watching videos on it is the same as torrenting and carries the same risks.

The service gives access to content from several big torrent trackers, which means the variety and volume of content are quite large. Popcorn Time becomes even richer if you manually add other trackers to it.

It’s very user-friendly and requires minimal effort to use. All you have to do is search for the show you want to watch, choose the video quality, choose the subtitle language, and you’re good to go!

Are there any cons?

Since Popcorn Time uses the BitTorrent protocol, anyone can see your IP address when you’re watching videos. This means you should be using it with a VPN – otherwise, you might get a visit from the police. You’re not just downloading content with Popcorn time – you’re also uploading it, which will slow your connection down more than FlixTor will.

2. MoviesJoy

MoviesJoy

  • Restrictions: None
  • Content: Varied, comparable to FlixTor
  • Platforms: Website
  • Risk: Medium
  • Type: Embeds streams from other platforms

MoviesJoy is an almost 1-for-1 alternative to FlixTor: both are online streaming platforms that embed videos from other sources (rather than work as BitTorrent clients), and both are completely free to use. With MoviesJoy you’ll find a rich library of over 10,000 films and TV shows, many available in HD (or 720p) and with subtitles.

If we compare it to FlixTor, we’ll see several differences. For example, MoviesJoy doesn’t have a premium, or “VIP” version. This is usually not a great sign, but not in this case: with MoviesJoy, your TV time will not be interrupted by annoying ads.

MoviesJoy has a good-looking, convenient website, where you can filter content by genre, country, IMDb rating, and more.

Are there any cons?

While it’s true that ads won’t annoy you as you stream on MoviesJoy, this platform isn’t as privacy friendly as FlixTor – it does use certain non-intrusive advertising methods, such as the popunder ad service PopAds. Also, some films and TV shows on MoviesJoy have subtitles you won’t be able to toggle on and off.

3. Project Free TV

homepage of project free tv

  • Restrictions: None
  • Content: Varied, less content than FlixTor
  • Platforms: Website
  • Risk: Medium
  • Type: Stream search engine

Yet another completely free platform for online streaming is Project Free TV – or so it seems. In reality, this is more of a search engine that loads streams from “non-affiliated third parties.”

The selection is quite rich, especially if you’re looking for the more popular shows or films of the day. If it’s something stranger you’re looking for, then you’re more likely to be successful with either of our Top 2 choices.

Since the platform has no content on their servers and it isn’t served via P2P like Popcorn Time, using ProjectFTV is less risky.

Are there any cons?

Firstly, the library is significantly smaller than you’ll be used to with FlixTor. Secondly, while the content is certainly available, you may have to work a bit to find the right source. And along the way, you may be redirected to some unsavory locations, including NSFW ones. In short, the experience isn’t as smooth, and you should consider using it with an anti-malware tool as well as an ad blocker.

4. SubsMovies

homepage of subsmovies

  • Restrictions: None
  • Content: Varied, comparable to FlixTor, but lower quality
  • Platforms: Website
  • Risk: Medium
  • Type: Embeds streams from other platforms

Using SubsMovies is by no means as pleasant as using FlixTor, but this platform has a specific strength – subtitles. If you (or your mom and dad) are looking for subbed streams in languages other then English, this is your best bet. Some of the more popular films or TV shows will give you access to dozens of languages, and the interface is super-easy to use.

The selection of content is very rich and your streams won’t be interrupted by ads. SubsMovies also doesn’t have any content on-site, which makes it a lot less dangerous (copyright-wise) to use than a torrent-based service.

Are there any cons?

FlixTor and MoviesJoy have high standards for content. As a result, you’re less likely to encounter bad aspect ratios or low definition videos. SubsMovies isn’t nearly as diligent.

Also, while there are no ads in the middle of videos, the site does expose you to annoying and nefarious forms of advertisement – the first time you click “Play” will inevitably take you to some third-party website. Finally, the video player is buggy and there’s no way to synchronize the subs if their timing is off.

5. PopcornFlix

Homepage of popcornflix

  • Restrictions: None
  • Content: Lots of ‘80s and ‘90s content
  • Platforms: Website or apps for Apple TV, Roku, Amazon, Xbox, iOS, and Android
  • Risk: None
  • Type: Free streaming platform, all content hosted by PopcornFlix

Anyone who misses the films and TV shows of the ‘80s and ‘90s should try PopcornFlix – you’ll find many old classics and B films just waiting to be watched.

PopcornFlix is the most straightforward of all the streaming platforms on this list: all content is hosted on the website, so all you have to do is click play. There’s no login, no payment, and absolutely no ads. The reason this is possible is that PopcornFlix is owned by the largest independent distributor of motion pictures to the world market – Screen Media Ventures, LLC. In other words, using PopcornFlix is fully legal.

The content is available via the website, but you can also access it through one of the PopcornFlix apps, making things easier for those with TVs or mobile devices.

Are there any cons?

PopcornFlix is not your place for newly-released content. Also, there’s no convenient way to filter, making discovery a bit of a hassle.

6. Sony Crackle

homepage of sony crackle

  • Restrictions: Only in the US and 20 other locations
  • Content: Varied – Sony, Columbia Pictures, TriStar Pictures, and Screen Gems libraries
  • Platforms: Website or apps for iOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon, Xbox, Playstation 4, Roku, and more
  • Risk: None
  • Type: Free streaming platform, all content hosted by Sony Crackle

Sony Crackle is one of the fastest-growing streaming websites in the world. Owned by Sony Pictures, the service delivers video of the highest quality. Add to that a sleek, easy-to-navigate interface, and it’s easy to see why people are signing up to the service in droves.

Every movie and TV show on Sony Crackle is hosted on the site, so you’ll never have to switch to a different website or server to enjoy the latest content.

Since the content on Sony Crackle includes movies from some of the largest film studios, you’ll find many classics featured on the Crackle website. There’s also a good selection of newly-released films and some of the latest TV series – Sony Crackle is not a one-trick pony.

Are there any cons?

The selection falls well short of what’s available from FlixTor and the service – while completely free – is only available in 21 countries, with the most content available to US viewers. And VPN users, of course. Additionally, you’ll have to suffer some ads.

7. Tubi TV (tubi)

Tubi TV (tubi) Homepage

  • Restrictions: Only in the US and Canada
  • Content: Varied – Paramount Pictures, Metro Goldwyn-Meyer, Lionsgate, Warner Bros., Universal pictures libraries and more
  • Platforms: Website or apps for iOS, Android, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon, Xbox, Playstation 4, Roku, and more
  • Risk: None
  • Type: Free streaming platform, all content hosted by Tubi TV

Tubi TV is currently home to more than 12,000 movies and TV shows. This powerful service categorizes content into genres to make searching easy. But if you know the name of the movie or show you’re looking for, you can enter it into the search bar for immediate results.

There’s a nice selection of newly released content available on Tubi TV. However, the bulk of the movies available are at least 10 years old. If you’re looking for B-movies or all-time classics, Tubi TV has a lot to offer.

Are there any cons?

Tubi TV is only available to users in the US and Canada – users in other countries will have to rely on a VPN service.

Why every streamer should consider getting a VPN service

All types of streaming can benefit from a solid VPN tool. This is especially true of free streaming, where security and anonymity can be a serious concern. However, even those using mainstream content platforms can use VPNs to access more content or even increase connection speeds in certain cases. So, let‘s see how a VPN can benefit you.

Copyright infringement

Using some of the above streaming platforms can get you in trouble. For example, using Popcorn Time is essentially impossible without leaking your IP address and opening yourself up to copyright complaints. Depending on where you are in the world, this can be very costly.

While some of the other streaming websites are less dangerous (it can be difficult for third-parties to say what exactly it is you’re doing on a platform like MoviesJoy), it’s naïve to think there’s no risk.

A VPN can protect you because:

  • Your ISP will only see you connecting to a VPN, rather than the server containing copyrighted content
  • The destination server will only see the VPN IP address, instead of your real one
  • The VPN encrypts all your data, so no one from the outside can know what you’re doing

This way, you can be confident of your safety as you stream your favorite shows.

Geo-blocking

Some streaming websites limit what content you can access based on your location. This is usually the case with fully legal ad-funded platforms, like Sony Crackle and Tubi TV (not PopcornFlix), as well as premium ones, like Netflix or Hulu.

Geo-blocking

In order to avoid these restrictions, you need to change your virtual location, which is determined by your IP address.

Well, as you already know, a VPN will let you change your IP address. Moreover, it will let you choose which country you are connecting through, unlocking content only available in that country.

If you choose a VPN service with servers in the US, you’ll be able to access most of the top-rate English content on the internet.

ISP throttling

It is quite common for Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to limit connection speeds for certain kinds of traffic. P2P is a common target, but so are popular streaming websites – both are a heavy load on ISP servers they’d rather not have.

This is an unfair practice, but a VPN will help you here as well: if your ISP doesn’t know what you’re doing online, it can’t make your life more difficult.

Choosing the right VPN

Your choice of VPN will depend on the streaming platform you’re using, but you should always consider three factors:

  • Security
  • Performance
  • Server list

Here are three choices that have a good combination of these characteristics.
