When a market is oversaturated but all you see and hear are the same old names of the most popular providers, it might be a good idea to zoom out and look at the lesser-known alternatives. Who knows – you might unearth some hidden gems in that market. Or you might realize just how good the top providers really are.
In any case, I invite you to have a look at VPNSecure vs VPN Unlimited. There is no mistaking what these services are about as they have the VPN (Virtual Private Network) acronym in their names. But providing a good service is more than just slapping some acronym in front and calling it a day.
This is why I’ll have a look at these two side-by-side to scrutinize them and see which one offers the best speed, privacy, security features, compatibility, and much more. Let’s see what these providers have to offer.
|“Best of” nominee||N/A||N/A|
|Price starts from||$2.99/month||$4.99/month|
|Review||VPNSecure review||VPN Unlimited review|
One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a VPN service is speed and performance. VPN Unlimited has a fleet of over 500 servers in 50+ locations around the world. While less than the offerings of the market leaders, it does offer decent speeds in many locations.
|Owns all servers||Yes||No|
|P2P servers||Not all||Yes|
VPNSecure, on the other hand, offers just 80 servers in 48 countries. Speeds are generally OK but below average in most cases and abysmal at times. However, it does offer reliable performance with very few, if any, outages or performance dips. They also have the added benefit of owning all of their servers, which can be considered a plus. Still, VPN Unlimited is the better option in this regard.
|Free trial||Yes (30 days)||No|
|Money-back guarantee||7 days||30 days|
VPNSecure offers a fair amount of pricing plans – from the most expensive one month to the cheapest plan of three years, which will cost you $2.99/month. Additionally, you can try the service out with a free trial version of the app. The free trial is valid for up to 30 days, or until 2GB of bandwidth are used up. It is limited to US servers only, but it’s enough to see what the app is capable of.
VPN Unlimited has fewer options to choose from. Or more – it really depends on your perspective because you can pay an additional fee to upgrade your plan from 5 simultaneous devices to 10. The plans can be purchased for one month, one year, or even for a lifetime.
|Encryption||DES-CBC, AES-128, AES-256||AES-256|
|Protocols||OpenVPN (TCP/UDP)||WireGuard, KeepSolid Wise, OpenVPN, IKEv2|
|DNS and IP leaks||No leaks||No leaks|
|Security Features||StealthVPN||DNS Firewall|
A major reason for using a VPN service is to secure personal data and protect online privacy. In this regard, VPNSecure does offer decent protection. It provides AES-256 encryption (the default was AES-128 so make sure to change that setting) and uses the OpenVPN protocol. It also offers a Stealth VPN feature that enables it to bypass Deep Packet Inspection.
VPN Unlimited also does a decent job on the security front. It offers the standard VPN protocols including OpenVPN, Wireguard, L2TP/IPSec, and IKEv2. It comes with DNS leak protection, a kill switch, and KeepSolid Wise, a stealth protocol for dealing with Deep Packet Inspection.
It’s a close call, but VPN Unlimited has strong encryption by default and offers more alternative tunneling protocols. This makes it the better option in terms of security.
|Logging||No logging||More than minimal|
On the privacy front, VPNSecure has a no-logs policy. However, the company behind the service is registered in Australia, which is a 5 Eyes country.
As such, because VPN Unlimited collects more data than necessary, it makes VPNSecure the better alternative if you’re more concerned about privacy.
Ease of use and compatibility
|Major dedicated apps||All||All|
|Other dedicated apps||N/A||Amazon Fire|
|Browser extensions||Chrome||Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera|
|Manual setup||Tomato, Synology NAS, and DD-WRT||Roku, Apple TV, Chromecast, Kodi, routers, NAS|
|Simultaneous devices||5||5 or 10|
VPNSecure offers their customers simple interfaces for Windows, Mac OS, Linux, iOS, and Android. These apps are very easy to install and set up. They also offer a Chrome extension but lack support for Edge, Firefox, and Opera.
VPN Unlimited is also very easy to use and has a nice interface. It is available on virtually every major platform including Windows Phone, and Apple TV. It also has browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Opera. If ease of use is a major concern for you, both services are excellent options.VPN Unlimited, however, is available on more platforms and, thus, wins this round.
Netflix and other streaming platforms
|Other Netflix libraries||No||No|
|Smart DNS||Yes||Yes (extra cost)|
If you want a VPN solution to enable you to watch Netflix, VPNSecure isn’t really a great choice. In fact, they announced that they will no longer support unblocking Netflix. Thus, if streaming and getting around geo-restrictions is a priority for you, you’d be wise to pick a better-suited VPN.
VPN Unlimited does work with Netflix although some servers are blocked. The speeds are good enough for HD streaming and you can also access BBC iPlayer and Hulu through their designated servers.
Torrenting and P2P
|Allowed on||Not all servers||Yes|
|Free SOCKS5 proxy||No||No|
|Split tunneling||No||Yes (Android only)|
VPNSecure vs VPN Unlimited – which is better for torrenting? Well, both solutions aren’t bad for torrenting as they allow P2P traffic. However, the speeds aren’t great on either, and neither allows P2P traffic on all servers.
While both options do support torrenting, there are certainly better VPN options out there if you want a VPN just for torrenting purposes. These two provide none of the essential security measures that are needed when torrenting. But if you had to choose between these two, VPN Unlimited does offer better speeds than its competitor and has designated P2P servers. Keep in mind, though, that you might experience occasional connection drops while torrenting.
|Works in China||Yes||Yes|
|Stealth VPN||Yes||Yes (KeepSolid Wise)|
|Tor over VPN||No||No|
As for use in China, both services do offer obfuscation features in the form of Stealth VPN and KeepSolid Wise for VPNSecure and VPN Unlimited respectively. Thus, both options can be used in China and other censored locations. However, they cannot be regarded as the best options for this task you’d be better off with a more viable alternative.
When it comes to customer support, both providers perform quite well. VPNSecure offers 24/7 live chat in addition to a comprehensive library of self-help content. The support representatives respond to queries sent through support tickets, though not as quickly as is advertised on their support page.
VPN Unlimited, likewise, offers 24/7 email and live chat support options. They also have decent self-help content. Both solutions offer excellent customer support and are evenly matched in this regard.
VPNSecure vs VPN Unlimited: Best VPN by category
|Total wins||2 out of 9||5 out of 9|
VPNSecure vs VPN Unlimited – which is better?
Once all of the results have been tallied, it becomes clear what are the strengths and weaknesses of each provider.
VPNSecure could be considered the cheaper and more privacy-oriented VPN. Although Australia is not the perfect place in terms of privacy, VPNSecure has ownership of their small number of servers so at least that provides some confidence that your data is secure from interception.
On the other hand, VPN Unlimited asks for a bigger price, but provides considerably more features in terms of security, better connection speeds, and even streaming.
However, it should be noted that neither of these providers are outstanding in any regard. Whatever your priorities are, there are better and cheaper alternatives out there.
