The Emmys are one of the biggest award shows on TV, but if you live outside of the United States, it is harder to watch them live. The award show airs on NBC every September and celebrates the best in American television.

You can watch the Emmys live on the NBC website, the NBC app, or on Hulu. You won’t have any trouble doing this within US borders, but if you’re in another country, you’ll have to overcome a couple of obstacles. NBC’s website only works if you are in the US and the same is true with Hulu.

Plus, most cable providers outside of the US don’t offer NBC, which is a requirement for accessing content on the website. Luckily, there are ways to bypass these restrictions. Here’s how to watch the Emmy Awards online anywhere in the world.

What is geo-blocking?

Geo-blocking is what happens when a website restricts access to content based on geography. Many streaming networks, broadcasters, and other media websites limit what content you have access to. This is why Netflix in the United States looks much different from Netflix in the UK. It is also why someone in London can’t go onto NBC’s website and stream the channel live the same way someone in the US can. Most websites like this have to perform geo-blocking because of copyright laws and licensing concerns, but this does not make it any less annoying.

You can bypass geo-blocking fairly easily, as long as you have a VPN. Here how to watch the Emmy Awards online using a VPN.

Although you might be able to find a creative way to access NBC directly from their site, it’s easier to go through Hulu, Sling, YouTube TV, or another service that has NBC compatibility. Both Sling and Hulu are exclusively for US residents, but with a VPN you can get around these restrictions.

A VPN is a service that hides your IP address and redirects your online activity through a remote server. With a good VPN, you will be able to trick Hulu or Sling into thinking you are in the US even if you’re an ocean away. The other thing you need is an American credit card, but if you don’t have one you can use PayPal instead. Sling costs $25 a month, while Hulu Live costs  $39.99. With either, you can get access to a huge variety of live US-restricted media content.

All you have to do is buy a VPN package, download the appropriate software, and pick a server that is located within the United States and you will be able to purchase a Hulu or Sling subscription that will give you instant access to NBC.

With a VPN, you can create a private tunnel that will let you alter your IP address to the location of your choice, so long as you use a good VPN that has servers in the location you need. Your best bet is to choose a VPN provider that has servers in a lot of different countries. This way you can access almost any geo-blocked content you need. ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and CyberGhost are three safe bets.

ExpressVPN logoWidely considered one of the best VPN providers on the market, ExpressVPN has over 2,000 servers in over 90 countries, many of them located in the United States. ExpressVPN is also fast for a VPN and few can match ExpressVPN when it comes to security. The provider also offers a lot of privacy. They have a zero-log policy, so your activity will be more anonymous than using other VPNs that log their users’ activity.

Another advantage of ExpressVPN is that they have reliable customer support. They have 24/7 live chat and apps for a wide range of devices, including Android, iOS, Mac, Windows, and Linux. The only major shortcoming that ExpressVPN has a steep price. Although still reasonable, you’ll find cheaper VPNs out there.

NordVPN logoNordVPN is another top-tier VPN that you can easily use to access NBC and watch the Emmy Awards from anywhere in the world. NordVPN has more than 5,100 servers in over 60 countries. NordVPN also boasts some of the best security and privacy protocols available. NordVPN has great encryption, a kill switch, and a no-logging policy that puts it on par with ExpressVPN. Another good thing about NordVPN is that you can use it with as many as six devices at once, which is more than ExpressVPN allows.

The majority of NordVPNs servers are in the US and the UK, which makes it a great choice if your goal is to stream US-limited media content like the Emmys.

Cyberghost logoA third option is CyberGhost. Although it doesn’t have as reliable of a reputation as the other two, it is still one of the highest-rated VPNs on the market. It is also the cheapest of the three. Cyberghost has acceptable security standards, and, like ExpressVPN and NordVPN, adheres to a zero-logging policy. You’ll find minor complaints about the company’s security and privacy standards, but most of this stuff won’t affect your ability to anonymously stream the Emmys.

CyberGhost has 3,000+ servers in 60 countries. So you will be able to access a wide variety of geographically restricted content. You can also use the service on all of your devices because it allows seven simultaneous connections.

While all three of these providers will allow you to reliably watch the Emmy’s live, ExpressVPN is the best option if you’re looking for a mix of speed, security, and privacy. With so many server locations, you can watch all the geo-blocked content you want. NordVPN is definitely a good pick as well. It has great security and privacy options, plus it is a little less expensive.
