A streaming VPN can help you get the most out of your subscription by granting access to geo-restricted libraries, preventing ISP throttling, and securing your online data. However, not all VPNs are built for streaming. Some lower-grade VPNs are easily detected and blocked by streaming platforms, while others cause slowdown, souring the streaming experience.

To bring you the best streaming VPN recommendations, our VPNpro team conducted in-house tests with 9 popular providers, using active accounts. This VPN streaming test report by VPNpro is based on real-world testing across multiple platforms and regions, including the US, UK, and Canada. Below, you’ll find real platform testing results that reveal which VPNs actually work with popular streaming services.

Testing methodology

Our VPNpro team and I evaluated 9 well-known VPN providers: NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, Norton VPN, Total VPN, Bitdefender VPN, IPVanish, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost. To see if they could provide a smooth streaming experience, I tested the VPNs against major streaming platforms, such as Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. Since these platforms use advanced methods to identify and block VPN traffic, it’s crucial for a VPN to hide its presence and avoid detection.

To replicate real user experience, I used paid, verified subscriptions for Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video. Testing was conducted on a range of platforms, from smart TVs to mobile devices, to ensure it works well across a variety of devices. To cover the high-demand regions, we manually connected to servers in three regions: the US, UK, and Canada.

During testing, I logged whether a VPN successfully bypassed streaming platforms’ geo-restrictions. Below you can see an example of a VPN, particularly NordVPN, working with the Netflix streaming platform.

In some cases, the result of a VPN not working with a streaming service during our tests looked like the photo below. In this instance, TotalVPN was unable to bypass Disney+ restrictions when I connected to one of its US servers.

TotalVPN-connecting

Additionally, I carried out consistency analysis and monitored whether each VPN bypassed the restrictions instantly or required manual server switching. Taking it further, I ran the streams for a few minutes to see whether the VPN could maintain HD streams without buffering. Below you’ll find an overview of all the testing results.

Streaming results overview

After evaluating 9 VPN services to determine how well they unblock restricted content without slowing connection speeds, NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, and IPVanish stood out as the top ones, demonstrating the ability to unblock every platform we tested them with. Ultimately, their ranking was determined by their reliability and consistency in bypassing streaming platforms’ geographical restrictions, as well as the ability to maintain high-quality and buffer-free streaming.

Based on these tests, NordVPN stood out as the best VPN for streaming on every major platform, as it reliably bypassed geo-restrictions without server changes and maintained a buffer-free HD viewing experience. In some cases, it did take 10 seconds for the VPN to reach HD streaming, but this brief delay is justified by the added layer of streaming protection.

NordVPN is closely followed by Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, and IPVanish, as they unblocked every streaming service, but to achieve it, I encountered occasional issues with loading or reaching HD quality. Despite these minor inconsistencies, these providers remain the top choices for streaming, as these brief interruptions did not detract from the overall viewing experience.

The rest of the VPN providers, including Norton VPN, CyberGhost, Bitdefender VPN, and Total VPN, ranked lower, as they didn’t unblock all streaming services. While Norton VPN successfully unblocked most platforms, except for Prime Video, the remaining providers failed to bypass geographical restrictions or maintain stable HD playback with more streaming platforms.

The table below shows the unblocking success rate and ranking of VPNs tested against streaming platforms in the US, UK, and Canada regions:

Platform results

In case you’re looking for a reliable VPN for a specific streaming platform you’re subscribed to, I summarized VPN streaming results for every major platform and recommended the best ones for them. Take a look below.

Netflix

Even though Netflix is available in over 190 countries, it offers different content libraries for every region due to licensing agreements. This means that some viewers might have a bigger or more diverse library of content to choose from than others. However, using a VPN allows to bypass geographical restrictions and access content libraries from other countries, while securing your streaming data at the same time. That said, not all VPNs can unblock different Netflix libraries due to strict VPN detection systems, which is why we tested 9 VPNs to find the VPNs that would successfully achieve this.

Interestingly, during our tests, all VPNs managed to unblock the US, UK, and Canada Netflix libraries. However, not all completed it without server changes or buffering. The VPN provider that performed the most impressively during my tests with Netflix was NordVPN. When connected to the US (New York #5819), Canada (Montreal #1637), and the UK (Manchester #2670) servers, I was granted access to different libraries in HD instantly without needing to change servers or reload the streaming platform.

NordVPN-working-with-US-Netflix
NordVPN working with US Netflix

Surfshark, Proton VPN, Express VPN, and CyberGhost are runners-up for streaming Netflix, as they also seamlessly unlocked the US, UK, and Canada Netflix libraries without needing to manually reconnect to other servers. That said, with Surfshark, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, and CyberGhost, I noticed that the stream was in lower quality at first, unlike with NordVPN. However, this was brief, and after waiting around 5 seconds, my The Empress stream reached HD resolution and remained buffer-free.

IPVanish, Norton VPN, Bitdefender, and TotalVPN also managed to unlock the US, UK, and Canada Netflix libraries, though in some cases, I had to manually reconnect to other servers to bypass geo-blocks. I also experienced some issues with Netflix loading, while Bitdefender and TotalVPN in particular struggled to reach HD resolution.

Overall, all our tested providers worked with Netflix, just the top ones, like NordVPN, managed to do it seamlessly and without buffering or a drop in streaming quality.

BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer contains thousands of hours of various content, including dramas, comedies, documentaries, news, and kids' programmes. However, its content is strictly geo-restricted to the UK due to licensing agreements, meaning that it’s unavailable to viewers outside of it. As mentioned previously, using a reputable VPN can help bypass such a hurdle by masking your IP address and assigning one located in the UK.

That said, not all of our tested VPNs were capable of bypassing the strict BBC iPlayer’s geo-blocks and avoiding VPN detection. 7 out of 9 VPN providers managed to unblock BBC iPlayer, with Surfshark performing the best. It bypassed geographical blocks instantly without any need for troubleshooting. Also, when I connected to its London server, it streamed The Other Bennet Sister in HD straight away. NordVPN follows Surfshark closely behind with a few seconds' delay to reach HD streaming.

Surfshark-working-with-BBC-iPlayer
Surfshark working with BBC iPlayer

Next up are ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, and IPVanish, which also unblocked BBC iPlayer, but with them, I experienced minor issues with loading the platform, and it took around 15 seconds for them to reach HD streaming. Meanwhile, Norton VPN and Bitdefender struggled slightly to unblock BBC iPlayer, as I had to manually change their UK servers to get access to the platform.

Lastly, CyberGhost and TotalVPN weren’t able to bypass BBC iPlayer’s geo-blocks at all, no matter how many times I switched their UK servers, reloaded the site, or took precautions to mask my real location, like using Incognito mode.

So for BBC iPlayer, I recommend using Surfshark, as it was the most successful at bypassing its blocks and providing HD and buffer-free streaming.

Hulu

Similarly, Hulu also offers a vast library of movies and TV shows, but is geographically locked to the US due to licensing agreements. Again, a VPN can help bypass these restrictions, but you have to choose a reputable provider. In our tests, three out of the nine VPNs I tested, CyberGhost, TotalVPN, and Bitdefender, failed to unblock Hulu entirely, proving that a reputable VPN is essential to gain access to Hulu, or any streaming service for that matter.

On the other hand, NordVPN emerged as the top performer at unblocking Hulu outside the US. When connected to its New York #8687 server, I accessed Hulu to stream Mormon Wives without delays or a drop in streaming quality. Close behind were Surfshark, Proton VPN, and ExpressVPN, which also seamlessly unblocked Hulu, but with them I wasn’t able to stream in HD right away – there was a around 10-second waiting period before I could watch The Bear in HD.

Proton-VPN-working-with-Hulu
Proton VPN working with Hulu

IPVanish and Norton also worked with Hulu, but I had to switch servers a couple of times to access it. Additionally, I had to reload the site to watch High Potential in HD.

From my experience, to access Hulu outside the US and stream it safely, I recommend NordVPN, as it worked seamlessly with the platform. As a more budget-friendly option, Surfshark worked with Hulu exceptionally well, too.

Disney+

Just like Netflix, Disney+ is available internationally, offering tailored content to every region. To access its different libraries in the US, UK, and Canada, we put the 9 VPNs to the test, and 6 of them succeeded, with NordVPN being in the lead. I was granted seamless access from the very first server (Montreal #109), and I could enjoy a buffer-free experience while streaming Avatar.

Next up were ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and Proton VPN, which provided me with a stable and reliable access to Disney+, but caused a slight slowdown of about 15 seconds. Despite this, afterwards, I was able to stream in HD without buffering.

ExpressVPN-working-with-Disney
ExpressVPN working with Disney+

IPVanish and Norton followed, unlocking Disney+ but also requiring a bit of troubleshooting in the process, like switching servers and reloading the site. While IPVanish was able to reach HD streaming without buffering after around a minute of streaming, Norton VPN didn’t exceed 1080p resolution.

Ranking at the bottom, CyberGhost and TotalVPN were completely ineffective at bypassing Disney+ geo-blocks. Despite repeated attempts to switch servers and refresh the platform, both services were consistently blocked.

The top contender for accessing the US, UK, and Canada Disney+ libraries is NordVPN, which unblocked them on the first attempt and provided HD and interruption-free streaming, making it an excellent option for Disney+.

Prime Video

Prime Video is available in over 240 countries and works similarly to Netflix and Disney+, as it offers tailored libraries to different regions. The different libraries aren’t easy to access even with a VPN, as 3 out of 9 of our tested VPN providers, including Norton VPN, Bitdefender, and TotalVPN, failed to bypass the US, UK, and Canada Prime Video’s geo-blocks.

The most successful at unlocking the US, UK, and Canada Prime Video libraries was NordVPN. For me, it worked seamlessly and delivered a consistent HD stream straight away in every tested region. For instance, when connected to London #2120, I could enjoy Young Sherlock without interruptions.

With Prime Video, CyberGhost slightly redeemed itself, as it had no issues accessing various libraries and delivering great video quality. But as with Surfshark, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, and IPVanish, it took around 30 minutes for the stream to reach HD resolution.

While other providers struggled with a slight slowdown or being blocked entirely, NordVPN remained the top performer for accessing Prime Video’s US, UK, and Canada libraries.

Consistency analysis

After thorough tests, we also ranked the VPNs by their reliability and ability to connect to platforms without requiring server changes. This is an important characteristic for a VPN to have, as a reliable VPN helps to avoid the frustration of technical hurdles and allows to enjoy your favorite content without interruptions.

The following VPNs are the most reliable, as they consistently unlock platforms on the first attempt without requiring the user to switch servers.

  1. NordVPN: It unlocked every streaming platform I tested it against without having to switch servers. For NordVPN, I appointed consistency score of 9.5, as in some cases it took a few brief seconds longer to load the platforms or reach HD resolution, which is completely standard when using a VPN for streaming.
  2. Surfshark: It’s a seamless provider that worked on the first server. While I didn’t experience buffering, at times I noticed there was around a 10-second waiting period before the sites loaded and reached HD resolution.
  3. ExpressVPN: For me, all tested servers worked without the need to switch, though they occasionally had longer loading times. It provided HD video for Netflix and worked on the first server for BBC, Hulu, and Disney+.
  4. Proton VPN: I found it highly reliable for Netflix, requiring no server changes and delivering HD quality right away. It also worked on the first try for BBC, Hulu, and Disney+ with slightly longer loading times to reach HD resolution.
  5. IPVanish: Performance was strong, working perfectly for Netflix in the UK and US (though Canada required a website reload, but no server change). It worked from the first server for BBC, Hulu, Disney+, and Prime Video. Though for me, it took around 15 seconds to reach HD streaming.

The remaining VPN providers, Norton VPN, CyberGhost, Bitdefender, and TotalVPN, weren’t capable of bypassing some streaming platforms’ blocks. Even if they did, they weren’t as reliable or consistent at streaming, as when using them, I had to switch servers and reload the site for it to work.

Streaming quality analysis

This analysis revealed which providers can deliver high-definition streaming without delays and buffering. These providers consistently delivered HD content without technical hurdles or with very minimal latency:

  1. NordVPN: It delivered HD quality consistently and streamed content in HD right away without buffering. The only time it needed a few seconds to reach HD was when I connected to the Canada server to stream Hulu. However, the latency was barely noticeable.
  2. Surfshark: For the most part, it showed everything in HD immediately without buffering. While I encountered slightly longer loading times on Hulu and Disney+, it required no reloading and reached HD resolution shortly after.
  3. Proton VPN: Matching Surfshark's performance, for the most part, it delivered HD right away without buffering. I experienced slightly longer loading times with Hulu in all regions, but it did not disturb the viewing experience.
  4. ExpressVPN: It showed minimal latency, reaching HD streaming in around 20 seconds. Interestingly, with ExpressVPN, I experienced mid-stream loading issues on Disney+, but that didn’t seem to be a repeat occurrence.
  5. IPVanish: Performed well on Netflix with immediate HD for most regions, though the Canadian server required a website reload. Like a few others, it experienced an increased loading time on Hulu and Disney+.

While the remaining VPNs, including CyberGhost, NortonVPN, Bitdefender, and TotalVPN, could reach HD streaming for the most part on the platforms they unblocked (which weren’t all), the experience was often dampened by reloading and significant delays, sometimes reaching a full minute. Specifically, using TotalVPN and Bitdefender frequently resulted in mid-stream buffering or complete website loading failures.

Weakest streaming VPN performance cases

In my tests, Norton VPN, CyberGhost, Bitdefender, and TotalVPN were the weakest performers for streaming because they failed to unblock specific streaming platforms. Even when they did work, they were often unreliable and caused slowdowns and loading issues. Below, I go into more detail on their shortcomings:

  • Norton VPN: It failed to unlock the UK, US, and Canada Prime Video libraries. That said, it worked with Netflix, BBC iPlayer, and reached HD, though it required server switching and reloading.
  • Bitdefender VPN: It didn’t work with Hulu, Disney+, and Prime Video. However, it did bypass Netflix and BBC iPlayer restrictions and maintained a great quality stream, though it took a few server changes.
  • CyberGhost: Although it worked well for Netflix and Prime, it failed completely to connect with BBC iPlayer, Hulu, and Disney+. Compared to other VPNs, it lacks obfuscation features, which likely hindered its ability to bypass strict geo-restrictions.
  • TotalVPN: This provider failed to unblock the BBC, Hulu, Disney+, and Prime Video platforms during my tests. While it did work with Netflix, I still encountered loading issues.

Key findings

During our in-house tests, we found that the most reliable VPNs for streaming Netflix, BBC, Hulu, Disney+, and Prime Video in the US, UK, and Canada are NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN, ProtonVPN, and IPVanish. They managed to bypass strict geo restrictions with minimal or no interference and deliver high-quality content.

VPNs that worked best with Netflix in our tests were NordVPN, Surfshark, Proton VPN, Express VPN, and CyberGhost, as they unlocked its US, UK, and Canada libraries with a single server connection and managed to maintain buffer-free HD streaming.

Unfortunately, Norton VPN, Bitdefender, CyberGhost, and TotalVPN were the weakest performers because they failed to bypass several platforms' geo-restrictions. Even when they managed to connect, they were often unreliable, requiring constant server switching or page reloads to access content and maintain HD quality.

Data freshness

The last round of testing was completed 2026 August. To ensure data freshness in this article, we conduct regular retesting across all our featured VPN providers and streaming platforms. Since streaming platforms constantly update their VPN blocking mechanisms, we continuously verify that our top picks can still bypass the latest restrictions.

At the same time, VPNs also frequently improve to bypass geo-restrictions more effectively, bring faster speeds, and deliver higher streaming quality, which may change our ranking. Therefore, our continuous retesting guarantees that our recommendations for the best streaming VPNs remain current and reliable.

Conclusion

After testing 9 VPN providers against major streaming platforms, we found NordVPN to be the best streaming VPN overall for bypassing geo-restrictions and delivering uninterrupted HD streaming. During our tests, it unblocked every streaming service and its libraries with a single server connection.

Surfshark follows closely behind as the best value option, seamlessly unblocking streaming services’ libraries with very minimal slowdown. Lastly, ExpressVPN is another reliable alternative, which is perfect for streaming with minimal latency on devices that don’t natively support VPN apps.
