What is Windscribe VPN

Windscribe is one of the youngest competitors in the VPN arena. This service was launched in April 2016 near Toronto, Canada. Despite its young age, the service has been quite successful. In fact, it’s one of the most popular free VPNs on the market.

The first thing to notice about Windscribe is its location. Unfortunately for real privacy seekers, Canada is a member of the Five Eyes alliance. This means that this country is surveillance-friendly and may share personal data with other member countries.

With that said, we must add right away that there have been zero cases of compliance with data requests in Windscribe’s relatively short history. This VPN simply doesn’t log anything personally-identifiable.

There are two software versions: Free and Pro. The Free VPN is limited to 10 GB monthly usage and 10 countries, including among others, the US, Canada, the UK, Hong Kong, and the Netherlands.

But apart from these differences, both versions provide you with the same good online security and privacy.

Windscribe offers OpenVPN and IKEv2 protocols. There are also Stealth and WStunnel models designed for countries with restricted internet access.

This VPN has a malware and ad blocker called R.O.B.E.R.T. that can be used on all devices. Windscribe also offers port forwarding with a static IP as a new security feature. If you want to protect your whole team, you can use the ScribeForce feature to build a team account.

If somehow you don’t like what you get, it’s possible to apply for a refund. Keep in mind that your refund request has to come no later than three commercial days after your purchase and your internet traffic cannot exceed 10 GB.

Where Windscribe is based and why it's important

Certain countries are not considered safe havens for a VPN service. Canada fits that bill. It’s just not a good omen when an online privacy-related company is based in a country that where mass surveillance is the norm. Even if this is done under the guise of national security. That’s why it could be important for users to know how the provider may be affected by its local jurisdiction and what that means for the users.

Windscribe Location: Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada

As you may know by now, Canada is one of the founders of the Five Eyes international surveillance alliance. In other words, data gathered by Canadian intelligence agencies may end up in other alliance countries.

With that said, you may find it a relief that this doesn’t necessarily mean full disclosure and identification. Winscribe VPN, for example, has not shared any useful or personally-identifiable logs with the authorities to date. And there have been dozens of data requests, for that matter.

As you can see, the location is one thing. It’s still up to the company and their policies how seriously your privacy is taken. Windscribe claims to be a no-logs policy provider. However, certain information is collected – like bandwidth usage and connection timestamps. Nevertheless, there’s no way to identify you, link you to specific online activities, and, therefore, locate you.

Available plans and pricing

Basically, Windscribe comes in two versions: Free and Pro. The Free VPN is a limited version. You can change between 10 locations and use 10 GB per month. The speeds of the Windscribe free version can also be somewhat slower than that of the Pro version. This paid version is relatively cheap and offers 3 plans as follows:

Monthly Plan

$ 9.00

per month

Billed monthly

Yearly Plan

$ 4.08

per month

Save 55%

Billed $49 every 12 months

Build A Plan

$ 1.00

per month

To balance out the possible concerns relating to its location, Windscribe allows users to pay for the Pro version in Bitcoin and gift cards from Paymentwall. This is great news for those in need of “full” anonymity. These are relatively low prices for the level of privacy and versatility Windscribe tries to keep up.

Instead of the former 2-year plan, now you can build your own plan by adding locations of your choice. That’ll cost you $1.00 per location per month.

With the Pro packages, you have 60+ countries worldwide, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited simultaneous devices, as well as access to the specialized Windflix servers in the US, the UK, Canada, and Japan. If Netflix is the main reason for your VPN need, Windscribe may be worth a shot.

Remember that you have only 3 days to change your mind and apply for a refund if you’re not satisfied. But don’t generate more than 10 GB of internet traffic during those days to be eligible.

Platforms Windscribe supports

Windscribe supports more platforms than the average VPN. Since the number of parallel connections is not limited, it does make sense to have as many clients as possible. So, if you have special needs, you may have just found your VPN.

Windscribe VPN Windows
Windscribe VPN MacOS
Windscribe VPN Linux
Windscribe VPN iOS
Windscribe VPN Android
Windscribe VPN Chrome
Windscribe VPN Firefox
Windscribe VPN Opera
Windscribe VPN Amazon FireTV
Amazon FireTV
Windscribe VPN Nvidia Shield

Windscribe VPN Kodi
Windscribe VPN Routers

Apart from the primary platforms, like Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Chrome, and Firefox, Windscribe is also available for Opera, Amazon FireTV, Nvidia Shield, Kodi, routers, and NAS. However, not all of them have their own apps.

If you want to set up Windscribe on a router, you need to follow the detailed instructions available on the website. The same goes for OpenVPN, IKEv2, and SOCKS5, which can be configured and then manually used on the devices that support them.

The Windscribe clients are all very simple and easy to use. Yet, there’s some room for privacy tweaks if you like control over VPN protocols and more. Using the desktop and browser apps together can also create multi-hops, which can provide you with an extra layer of anonymity. However, this comes at the price of slower speeds, just like when you’re using any of the obfuscation features (Stealth and WStunnel).

Windscribe and entertainment

Depending on the protocol and server location you choose to use, you can experience average or, sometimes, rather slow speeds too. One of the main factors here is obviously your baseline speed. Nevertheless, if you find Windscribe fast enough, it’s possible to have a good entertainment experience due to its versatility.

The Windscribe Free VPN users can possibly enjoy watching HD quality YouTube and other popular streaming sites. However, if you want to stream Netflix, you need the Pro subscription.

This VPN comes with dedicated Netflix servers: Windflix US, UK, Canada, and Japan. These servers can still bypass rigorous Netflix detection. Since these connections are not encrypted, the speeds can be fairly fast even for 4K streaming.

Unfortunately, you may not be able to fool the BBC iPlayer and Amazon Prime detections with the common VPN servers.

However, Windscribe offers you Datacenter and Residential Static IPs, which can help you avoid detection and blocking. Therefore, with some extra cost, you can actually stream Amazon Prime, BBC iPlayer, and other media centers as well.

Torrenting and P2P

the pirate bay torrenting

Windscribe supports torrenting and P2P file-sharing except when used for illegal activity. Interestingly, there’s no mention of this in the legal documents, such as the Terms of Use and the Privacy Policy. The only limitations apart from the possible copyright infringements are three locations: India, Russia, and South Africa. You shouldn’t try to use your BitTorrent, uTorrent, or Vuze client to connect to these locations. Fortunately, Windscribe makes sure that you don’t get confused. There’s a quite obvious crossed-out P2P icon next to the unsupported servers.

Some consider Windscribe as the best free VPN for gaming. That should say it all. Although speeds can be somewhat inconsistent depending on the server locations, you should have a seamless online gaming experience. Windscribe has good privacy features and wide global coverage to satisfy your gaming needs.

China? Seems like it.

using vpn in china

Apart from streaming Netflix or other media centers, many users may need a VPN because of local censorship. The regions influenced by VPN bans or censorship include China, Iran, the UAE, Turkey, and Russia.

These countries do their best to catch and fine users who try to evade detection. Therefore, you need a reliable no logs VPN service if you want to stay out of trouble.

User reports and tests indicate that Windscribe can be safely used in China. Most likely, you’ll have to use the Stealth protocol to do so. This can be way slower than the others. But when in need, you may just put up with the lags unless you look elsewhere for good speeds and a higher level of protection.
