What is CyberGhost
CyberGhost is a Romanian VPN service provider, whose product appears on a majority of VPN Top 10 lists. Long seen as a very privacy-observant company, CyberGhost started catching some flack over 2018.
The first stain on CyberGhost’s unblemished reputation came in the form of an article that ExpressVPN-made tools to detect DNS/WebRTC leaks. ‘Ghosties’, as the company calls their users, were apparently subject to serious leaking issues.
As the noise over these leaks died down, in came the news that CyberGhost had been bought by the UK-based Crossrider (now known as Kape Technologies) – a company known primarily for malware-related scandals and the shadiness of its billionaire owner, Teddy Sagi (of Panama Paper fame).
Despite the bad optics, CyberGhost is still known for running a strong, full-featured, and popular VPN service with a unique brand identity. It is no coincidence that the tool ranks among our favorite VPN services and has been recommended by such renowned publications as Wired, TechCrunch, or The New York Times.
Where CyberGhost is based and why it’s important
Two locations are important when discussing CyberGhost – Romania and the Isle of Man. The company that created CG is based in Romania, which is a relatively privacy-friendly location. This European country is not part of the 5/9/14 eyes surveillance framework and doesn’t have troubling data-retention laws.
CyberGhost owner's location - the Isle of Man
Kape Technologies is registered in a self-governing British Crown dependency, the Isle of Man. There are reasonable concerns over the influence UK authorities have in this state, but, on the face of it, the Isle of Man is a decent location for VPN services.
In the end, the jurisdiction CyberGhost functions under is a complex topic. This is both due the fact that the relationship between the UK and the Isle of Man is a matter of debate, but also because so is the relationship between Kape and CyberGhost’s Romanian developers’ company.

Compare CyberGhost to other providers
We have only written one comparison article that featured CyberGhost. In it, we pitted this service against NordVPN. The fact CG lost this one hardly causes concern. The reality is, CyberGhost wins the overwhelming majority of comparisons.

Available plans and pricing
Until recently, CyberGhost VPN had a pricing profile geared towards long-term subscriptions. The plan durations stretched from 1 month to 3 years and at one point they even offered a lifetime subscription. This has changed in favor of more short-term deals – users can now get CyberGhost for 1 month ($12.99), 6 months ($7.99), or 1 year ($6.49).
CyberGhost also has an unlimited 7-day free trial, which, unfortunately, you can only subscribe for after entering your payment details. If you fail to opt-out within those 7 days, CyberGhost will charge you for a whole year. That would be awful, but there is also a generous 45-day money-back guarantee.
Despite boasting about their privacy credentials, CyberGhost does not offer any anonymous payment methods. Users will be forced to pay by credit card or PayPal, neither of which is ideal if you’re involved in sensitive activities.
Platforms CyberGhost supports
CyberGhost does not have the most extensive app list in the world, but there are custom clients for the most popular platforms – Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. The interface is somewhat unorthodox compared to the rest of the market. To simplify the VPN experience, instead of complicated options CyberGhost offers usage profiles.
In addition to the custom apps, CyberGhost VPN also supports many other devices/platforms through the use of standalone VPN protocol apps. In other words, you can use the provider’s network by entering the right settings into an OpenVPN, L2TP, or IPSec client. This way you can get the service running on Linux, Routers, and more.
Using CyberGhost: streaming, torrenting, and China
This VPN is a decent (if not great) choice for most occasions. To illustrate, here are three popular VPN uses – unblocking streaming platforms, allowing users to torrent safely, and bypassing censorship/keeping people secure in restricted countries, such as China. CyberGhost can do a bit of all three.
CyberGhost for streaming
Whenever streaming enters the conversation, aside from Youtube we think of Netflix. In particular, the coveted US library of Netflix, which is a treasure trove of content. As non-US fans of the platform will know, getting into this library is not simple. Most VPN or proxy servers are blocked due to copyright reasons and users are left ‘eating the scraps’ of their local Netflix library.
CyberGhost has a huge server list and can easily get users past the Netflix US barrier. With that said, speed tests we ran for our CyberGhost review have raised questions about the VPN’s performance. Therefore, this is a recommended tool for Netflix, but only with a decent-to-good connection.
According to reports, CyberGhost will also get you into other streaming platforms and online TV channels, such as Hulu, NBC, and others. We advise using the free trial to test on an individual basis.
CyberGhost for torrenting
A good torrenting VPN needs a good attitude towards P2P, strong security features, and speed. CyberGhost mostly has all of this covered – P2P traffic is allowed, albeit not on all servers, and the VPN has a kill switch/leak protection.
Speed remains the only real issue, but it’s also a contentious one. Connections become faster or slower due to a myriad of reasons, so testing for yourself is generally the right way to go. On paper, CyberGhost is an above average torrenting VPN.
CyberGhost in China
Despite its strong security suite, CyberGhost may not be the most reliable choice for users in China. The simple reason is they don’t offer a way to bypass traffic analysis-based VPN blocking measures. Deep Packet Analysis (DPI) is a confirmed feature of the Great Firewall and the only way to deal with it is using “stealth protocols”, which scramble the traffic.
CyberGhost instead suggests their users switch from OpenVPN to L2TP/IPSec – a less secure and potentially compromised protocol. This may be a good solution for regular folks, but not people engaged in life-threatening activities.
