Apex Legends is one of the most popular battle royale games. So it’s no wonder some people can experience problems while playing the game, the most annoying of which is lagging. Luckily, we have more than a few solutions in this article.

Though the servers have performed well when you consider the game has surpassed all expectations, establishing a solid playing connection can be a tricky prospect. When playing Apex Legends, you’ll occasionally experience lags, jitters, and rubber banding during respawning.

Though Respawn, the company behind the game, is working on solutions, here’s our top Apex Legends lag fix.

How to fix Apex Legends lag 4-step guide

    1. Get a reliable VPN. We recommend NordVPN, now with 60% off.
    2. Start NordVPN and connect to a server that’s close to you.
    3. Launch Apex Legends.
    4. Enjoy a lag-free game!

Get NordVPN

A VPN solves the issue of bandwidth throttling. Often an Internet Service Provider (ISP) would purposefully slow down the connection if your streaming, torrenting, or gaming. In fact, a VPN solves even more Apex Legends problems – read more in our dedicated section below.

Top 9 Apex Legends lag fixes

There are quite a few ways to reduce or fix Apex Legends lagging issues. They can lie anywhere, from your device to your internet connection. Hopefully, one of them will help you.

  1. Meet minimum system requirements
  2. Upgrade to recommended system requirements
  3. Reduce the impact of other devices
  4. Stop background downloads
  5. Restart the game or device
  6. Ensure your system and Apex Legends are up to date
  7. Disable Game DVR
  8. Change the server region in Apex Legends
  9. Reinstall Apex Legends or your OS

1. Meet minimum system requirements

To enjoy a lag-free game, your device needs to meet minimum requirements:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7
  • CPU: Intel i3-6300 3.8GHz or AMD FX-4350 4.2 GHz Quad-Core Processor
  • RAM: 6 GB
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 640 or AMD Radeon HD 7730
  • GPU RAM: 1 GB
  • Hard Drive: Minimum 22 GB of free space

If it doesn’t, you can still try turning off all video effects, reducing the resolution, and everything else. However, if you can get a stable 60 FPS, Apex Legends will lag even while offline.

For 100% experience, consider upgrading your system to the following:

  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7
  • CPU: Intel i5 3570K or equivalent
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 or AMD Radeon R9 290
  • GPU RAM: 8 GB
  • Hard Drive: Minimum 22 GB of free space

Just like with the minimum requirements, you can always tweak the video settings before playing. This is a good idea if you meet some of the recommended system requirements.

3. Reduce the impact of other devices

You’ll want to ensure your bandwidth is prioritizing Apex Legends while you play.

It makes sense to avoid using other devices during the process, which will sap potency from your internet connection. If your router is prioritizing the wrong device, you could be in trouble.

Establish a clean slate by disconnecting all other devices and rebooting your game.

4. Stop background downloads

Avoid downloading anything as you play, which includes turning off the auto-update feature which is usually on by default.

By stopping updates and torrenting while you’re playing, you’ll have more bandwidth to play! It’s also a good idea to turn off your browser which may have multiple tabs opened, draining your device’s resources.

5. Restart the game or device

Close down the game and restart it. You can also try rebooting your device because the background processes might be taking their toll as well.

If the jittering has stopped, then you might have resolved the issue quicker than you realized was possible.

6. Ensure your system and Apex Legends are up to date

This tip is only for PC, where frame rate and performance problems run riot. This means getting the latest Windows updates, including hardware drivers.

The same goes for the game itself. If Apex Legends works without the latest patch, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be downloading anything until it doesn’t. The game makers are also working on reducing the lag, so make sure you check the official website for news.

7. Disable Game DVR

This one is also for PC and Xbox users only. If you’re using an Xbox:

  1. Open your Xbox app.
  2. Log in to your Microsoft account.
  3. Open Settings (gear icon).
  4. On Game DVR tab, choose turn off.
  5. Restart your computer and launch Apex Legends.

On Windows, do the following:

  1. Press Windows logo key and I.
  2. In Settings, choose Gaming.
  3. On the left, click Game DVR.
  4. Turn off Record in the background while I’m playing a game.
  5. Restart your computer and launch Apex Legends.

If you’re not using an Xbox, simply uninstall its app from your device.

8. Change the server region in Apex Legends

Depending on your location, Apex Legends might connect you to a server that’s further away than the one in another country next to you. Naturally, this increases connection latency. Luckily, there’s a hidden method for choosing whichever server you want from the Apex Legends title menu.

List of Apex Legends servers

On Windows:

  1. Launch Apex Legends and wait one minute.
  2. Click Accessibility Settings.
  3. Close the window and click on a new main menu option Data Center.
  4. Choose your desired server and start playing!

On PlayStation and Xbox:

  1. Launch Apex Legends and wait two minutes.
  2. Click Accessibility Settings.
  3. Close the window and press R3.
  4. Choose your desired server and start playing!

9. Reinstall Apex Legends or your OS

This is the last resort, but desperate times call for desperate measures! Each update that you download and install can cause irregularities in the game folder. Therefore, doing a clean install might be the right choice.

If you still experience lag issues, make sure the situation is not the same with other games or services. If it is, it might be time to reinstall your OS, especially if you did it years ago.

Why should Apex Legends players use a VPN

There are plenty of reasons why a player like you should consider getting the best VPN for Apex Legends. It can range from ISP throttling to choosing a server that’s unavailable otherwise. Below are all the reasons to get an Apex Legends VPN without any particular order.

Do VPNs lower ping in games? | Top 3 truly BEST VPNs for gaming

ISP throttling

As we’ve mentioned earlier, your ISP may be throttling your bandwidth to reduce the load on their network while considerably increasing your ping in the process. This often happens without the ISP informing you or informing in those unreadable Terms of Service papers that you no longer have.

This throttling problem impacts not only gamers. You might experience reduced speeds while torrenting or streaming because your ISP wants to save that bandwidth without investing in the infrastructure.

A VPN hides your traffic so that your ISP cannot detect what you are actually doing online, resulting in the best available performance. That’s also great from a security standpoint because a VPN also changes your IP address.

Changing your Apex Legends servers

By default, Apex Legends chooses your server according to geographic location. For example, it usually merges the EU with Russia. While there’s a hidden way to choose your desired server (see the 8th tip above), that doesn’t mean your ping will be as low as it can be.

With a VPN, you can connect to a server in the US or anywhere else and play with the locals instead. What’s more, the chances are that the route from the VPN server might be shorter than the one that Apex Legends offers, resulting in lower latency.

NordVPN server map

One can use the same method to access streaming platforms and other geo-blocked resources unavailable in your country. Most premium VPNs have thousands of servers in dozens of countries, so finding what you like won’t be hard.

Protection against DDoS attacks

DDoS attacks are one of the major issues for the gaming industry. While usually top players become targets, you can experience this as well if someone with knowledge decides that he doesn’t like you.

A DDoS attack disrupts the gaming processes by sending numerous requests to your IP. When the system becomes unable to process all of those requests in time, your connection to the Apex Legends server will shut down. As long as the attack goes, you may be unable to get back online.

The majority of Apex Legends streamers also use a VPN. By encrypting your traffic and hiding the IP address, a VPN leaves no easy option to enact a DDoS attack on you.

Check out our “Best VPN for Gaming” list for a selection of VPNs that may help you avoid ISP bandwidth throttling while simultaneously securing your traffic.

What is Apex Legends?

Apex Legends is among the most popular battle royale games. It focuses on team play and various unique characters with special abilities.

Starting from 2019, it has followed the Fortnite winning formula with great success. At the moment of writing this article, Apex Legends has a total of 100 million players.

The popularity is expected to rise further this year. A mobile version has already gone beta, and Respawn Entertainment is hoping for the success that Call of Duty and similar game ports had.

Apex Legends has been praised by critics and players around the world and named a worthy competition for Fortnite. It has also won numerous awards, including Best Multiplayer, Best Shooter, and Best Game You Suck At.

The game is available on Windows, Play Station 4 & 5, Xbox One & Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

What is Apex Legends about?

Whether you’re a gaming vet or simply looking to sample something new, Apex Legends could be right down your street. It’s a battle royale platform centered on first-person shooting, where teams compete in different settings to remain the last squad standing.

You’re dropped onto an island scavenging for gear but always involved in a team-oriented setup. No solo mode makes it very interactive, where there are usually 20 groups of 3 players competing in each game.

With a ton of in-game tools available, there truly is something for everyone with this great platform. Apex Legends has eight distinct characters with special moves, including favorites like Gibraltar, a walking tank, and Wraith, a ninja soldier who can go invisible (!).

Battle Royale games are occasionally lonely and frustrating, where multiple players are dropped onto an island and fight until there’s nothing left. With this being said, millions of players from across the globe play games of this nature. Naturally, the genre helps to reach a user who already wanted something not named Fortnite.

The game out of nowhere

Let’s first say that Apex Legends has reached its popularity without any pre-launch campaign or other advertising. It turned out that if the game is really good, you can reach 10 million players in three days and shoot at the top of the Twitch charts effortlessly.

EA is a well-known publisher, so having its logo helped Apex Legends to create extra buzz among the gamers. At the same time, EA didn’t try to control the development progress, which often turns out for the better. That turned for the better, both for the publisher and Respawn.

A huge sandbox

Just like the EA gave freedom to the developers, they gave players the freedom to choose and decide. Nearly everything is random, giving the feeling that anything can happen once you drop on the map with your team. And certainly, Apex Legends manages to deliver.

There’s something about a truly random experience that appeals to the masses, and this inherent characteristic has catapulted battle royale games to the forefront of the gaming community.

Free to play

Inevitably, not having to pay for great game results in more players. And the greatness of Apex Legends is what makes them stay. Keep adding all the updates, new loot, and new content, and you get a long shelf-life that the best online games have.

A new way of communication

Some players aren’t comfortable speaking over the microphone. Others might end up with players that don’t speak their language. Being aware of these issues, Respawn Entertainment created a great way to communicate without words.

It’s called the ping system. It allows you to notify someone about the loot, enemies, or a perfect landing spot. In short, such call-outs work on almost anything.

The ping system is context-sensitive. When someone suggests a landing spot, other players can ping it to confirm playing there. This helps with teamwork, especially establishing rapport with your fellow players.

However, becoming over-reliant on ping can eliminate some of the intuition and complexity that makes Apex Legends so unique, so remember to reduce ping where possible and stay within the confines of a good challenge.

How to fix Apex Legends lag on PS4?

Unfortunately, that’s a pretty common problem for players around the world. Here’s what you can try to fix the Apex Legends lag:

  1. Make sure nobody else is connected to your Wi-Fi and using bandwidth.
  2. Update Apex Legends and your PS4.
  3. Use an Ethernet cable instead of WiFi.
  4. Choose a server with low latency. Read more.
  5. Call your PS4 customer support.
  6. Get a VPN and set up SmartDNS on your PS4.

The last one might help because a reliable VPN can optimize the routing, effectively decreasing ping.

How do I reduce input lag in Apex Legends?

Apex Legends input lag is mostly related to Steam and your monitor’s refresh rate.

Here’s what you should try:

  1. Open Steam Library.
  2. Choose Apex Legends.
  3. Click Manage (a cogwheel icon).
  4. In Properties, pick Set launch options.
  5. Enter +fps_max and add your monitor’s refresh rate, i.e., 60 or 144.
  6. Now the command should look like +fps_max60.

What is a good ping for gaming?

While that depends on the game itself, usually anything below 20 ms is considered good. If yours is higher, don’t worry too much. On average, most gamers play with a 50-100 ms ping. Finally, anything above 150 ms is a bad ping.

Which Apex Legends server has the most players?

There’s no info about the most popular server. However, we do know which countries have the most Apex Legends players:

  1. United States – 39%
  2. United Kingdom – 7%
  3. Russia – 6%
  4. Brazil – 5.5%
  5. China – 4%

Together, these five countries make up for more than 60% of all Apex Legends players.
