How to use a VPN to get cheaper flights in 2024

Get Cheaper Flights with a VPN

Your location may influence travel prices. Airlines track your IP address to set prices based on local economies. What’s more, your visits to their websites give them weight to increase the final price tag of that flight you’ve been wanting. That’s called price discrimination – a common occurrence on the travel booking scene.

Luckily, there are plenty of travel hacks that can reduce the fees. The most effective one involves buying flight tickets with a VPN. So, instead of spending a fortune on airfare, you’ll have more money to enjoy great food, exquisite accommodation, and memorable activities.

In this article, we’ll overview how to use a VPN to get cheaper flights and the best services that can instantly reduce airline ticket fees. Plus, we’ll take a look at some other tips and tricks that can help you get the cheapest plane tickets.

What causes flight prices to change?

Even when using the best VPN, you must be strategic when looking for cheaper airline tickets. Thus, you need to know the main factors influencing flight cost increase.

  • Dynamic pricing. Ticket prices can change based on factors such as your browsing history and frequency of visits. The more you visit the booking sites, the more you’ll pay for the tickets.
  • Booking time. If you want to get the cheapest flight tickets, you either wait for last-minute fares or book far in advance. With the latter, we suggest looking at least 2 months in advance.
  • Destination’s popularity. Travel agencies increase flight prices if the location is very popular with tourists. Nevertheless, you can see extremely high fees for destinations that are hard to reach, for example, Mongolia.
  • Your location. Airline companies see where you are browsing from. So, if you’re trying to book from a wealthy country, chances are you’ll have to pay more.
  • Airline location. Some flight companies mitigate pricing in conjunction with the market in their home country. The cheapest country to book flights from  with a VPN could be one where the airline is based.
  • Type of airlines. Getting inexpensive flight tickets with luxury airlines is highly unlikely. Plus, don’t forget that you can get better deals when flying economy or business class.
  • Seasonality. Airfare is always more expensive during summer, Christmas holidays, or other special occasions. So, try making holiday plans in the off-season if you want to save money.

How do websites determine your location?

Airlines and other travel-related websites pinpoint your location based on several things. While the address they make out isn’t precise, they know the city, town, or village you’re in as you browse their page. Here’s how:

  • GPS. A number of websites like to straightforwardly ask for access to your location. If you deny it but the GPS tracking is enabled on the device, chances of them learning your whereabouts are sky-high. The flight prices can reach the same height as a result.
  • Mobile tracking. The location tracking is often enabled on smartphones and this data remains on the site or app unless cookies or cache are cleared.
  • IP address. Since your IP address can reveal your location via any household gadget, these sites can track your searches and potentially inflate prices for flights you’ve been looking at.
  • Browser cookies. Websites keep tabs on your browsing habits using cookies, which store info like when you visited and your whereabouts. This data lets them tailor what you see, and it might also be used to nudge up prices for flights you’ve looked at a lot.
  • Browser HTML5 geolocation. Your location may reach airline sites through the HTML5 geolocation feature. It’s present in most browsers, but a reliable VPN can easily trick it with a masked IP address.
  • Wi-Fi. Since Google and others can link Wi-Fi network names (SSIDs) to physical locations, travel sites could potentially use your network to get a general idea of where you are.

10 tips to get cheaper flights online

Even with a huge holiday budget, saving money on fares is always a win. After testing a few money-saving methods, we found the easiest ways to get cheaper flight tickets. Additionally, we advise combining these techniques for the most effective results.

  1. Use a VPN to get cheaper flights
  2. Look for Black Friday flight deals
  3. Clear cookies & use Incognito mode
  4. Use flight comparison websites
  5. Plan a layover on your own
  6. Book flight tickets individually
  7. Try budget airlines
  8. Hidden city flight method
  9. Look for error fares
  10. Use flexible points to fly for free

Use VPN to get cheaper flights

Utilizing a virtual private network is the best way to find cheaper flight tickets. A reliable provider will help you change your location and actual IP address to the country where flight tickets are the cheapest. That way, you trick booking sites and avoid inflated fares.

By avoiding geo-blocks, you can also hop to regions such as Mexico and India. There you’ll often find better deals as they are lower-income countries. You can also experiment and try different destinations.

Lastly, a VPN can help circumvent data tracking and inflated fare prices. A virtual private network will encrypt your data and hide your identity online. Thus, booking sites can’t use that information to increase ticket costs.

Note, that using a VPN only is not a guaranteed method for saving money on flights. Some airfare booking sites don’t adjust the prices on a whim. Nevertheless, utilizing a VPN proved to be one of the most effective methods.

Easily find cheaper flights with NordVPN

Clear cookies & use Incognito mode

You might have noticed that the more you revisit the booking site, the higher the prices. That’s because travel sites use your browser’s history to analyze your online habits and see which flights you’re interested in.

Clear cache & cookies to get cheaper flight tickets

You can prevent that by deleting your browser’s cookies and going incognito. While it won’t entirely hide your information, it will offer a degree of privacy.

Look for Black Friday flight deals

If you’re flexible on dates, you should look at Travel Tuesday, Cyber Monday, and, Black Friday flight deals. Biggest airline companies like Southwest, Delta, SAS, British Airways, Iberia, Ryanair, and many others eagerly participate in the Black Friday frenzy, unveiling exclusive flight deals that can make your dream destination a budget-friendly reality.

To navigate this sea of Black Friday travel deals effectively, our top recommendation is to start monitoring airlines and travel platforms in the days leading up to Black Friday. Many companies provide sneak peeks and special early bird deals. Moreover, sign up for newsletters and alerts from the flight providers. That will ensure that you are in the loop when it comes to Black Friday flight sales.

Excessive price checking on flight platforms can increase ticket costs during Black Friday. You can mask your activities and get better airline deals with a VPN. Currently, NordVPN offers up to 69% off + 3 months free.

Use flight comparison websites

Utilizing fare comparison sites is a great way to save time (and money) while hunting for cheaper flight tickets. These places let you check all possible flight options, prices, layover times, stops, and so on.

Skyscanner cheaper flights with a VPN

Additionally, don’t forget to check a few comparison sites before booking, as they usually offer different deals. Hence, a few places where you can start looking are Skyscanner, Kayak, Google Flights, and Kiwi. Moreover, don’t forget to change your location with a VPN, as you might find better prices that way.

Plan a layover on your own

One of the most missed chances in getting cheaper flights is a layover. In fact, making multiple-day layovers can, at times, save you hundreds of dollars on roundtrip flights. According to CNBC, airline tickets with a layover are 20% cheaper, on average, than nonstop flights. Of course, this method only saves money on flights, not the accommodations and other expenses of the layover.

Some of the most popular airlines that offer a range of layover flights for free: Finnair, KLM, TAP Air Portugal, Hawaiian Airlines, Iceland Air, and Japan Airlines. Moreover, you can actively seek out free layover flights on reliable websites like Cleverlayover, Skyscanner, or Kiwi.

Though as you seek layover flights yourself, be aware not to book layovers that are hours apart. Remember that this method is for those who want to create an additional destination of a few days or more before catching their next flight.

Book flight tickets individually

Though not foolproof, it’s one of the possible ways to snag cheap flight tickets. When you book multiple tickets at once, the system might bump all the tickets to the highest available price if there aren’t enough cheap seats left. For instance, you buy a round-about trip for $250, while buying the same two flights individually might save you up to $50.

Of course, this likely means separate seating if you’re traveling with company. You might also miss out on bundle deals, so the best way to go around it is looking up flights individually and as a whole to see which is cheaper.

Try budget airlines

Knowing the airlines with more generous prices might save you a decent buck. Of course, this class of flights might not be the most luxurious experience, but why not save some extra for your holiday? Here we’ll give some of the best budget-friendly options for your next flight:

USSpirit, Virgin America, Frontier, Southwest, JetBlue
CanadaSwoop, WestJet, AirTransat, Sunwing, Flair Airlines
EuropeRyanAir, Air Baltic, Wizz Air, EasyJet
East AsiaAir Asia, Nok Air, ThaiVietAir, Spring Airlines, Lion Air
AustraliaVirgin Australia, JetStar
Latin AmericaVolaris, GOL, VivaAerobus
Middle eastAir Arabia, Jazeera Airways, FlyDubai, SpiceJet
AfricaFlyAfrica, FastJet, FlySafair

You can save even more if you check these airlines frequently for any holiday or last-minute deals. As a bonus, a powerful VPN, like NordVPN, can help you dump those prices even lower if you check them through different regions or countries.

Hidden city flight method

One of the best money-saving tricks incorporates buying a longer flight with a layover and cutting the trip in the middle. Sometimes booking a direct flight to your destination might cost you more than taking a longer flight to some cheaper destination with a layover.

For example, buying a ticket from Boston to New Orleans with a layover in Dallas is more affordable than a direct flight to Dallas. In this case, the cheapest flight to NO with a layover is 38.80% cheaper than one with no layovers.

But before you do so, be sure to check if the airline’s terms of service don’t specifically cover these cases. Since a lot of travelers regularly miss their flights, it’s usually not penalized. Nonetheless, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Looking for error fares

Mistakes are inevitable, even on booking sites. Error fares are a great way to get extremely cheap flights, thanks to airline typos and misunderstandings.

However, you must be quick on your toes and book these flights fast, so bookmark or follow these websites on social media. Thus, you can try Secret Flying, Jack’s Flight Club, or Fly4Free.

Use flexible points to fly for free

Often underestimated, another option for getting cheaper flights is joining an airline loyalty program and opening a travel rewards card. Various reward programs involve banks, stores, and other means. For instance, United Airlines’ MileagePlus program members earn 5 MileagePlus miles per dollar spent on qualifying tickets. On top of that, this is just one of the many available programs.

Cheaper flights with reward points

Another popular alternative is flexible points using an airline or non-airline credit card. One of the prime examples is the Bank of America initiative called Travel Rewards, whose credit card earns you 1.5 points per dollar. Then, you can convert these points to book a free flight in Bank of America’s travel booking portal. Scour your local area for airline-related deals and programs that grant flexible points for cheaper or free flights.

Incognito flights – cheap flight hack or deception?

You’ll often hear that Incognito mode can yield you cheaper prices because it hides your IP address and other sensitive data. However, that’s not exactly true. Incognito is a hit-or-miss flight booking hack and works better as an additional step rather than a whole tactic.

First, because Incognito doesn’t really succeed at concealing your location. Airline websites already can tell your approximate whereabouts due to previous searches and similar information. Only services like VPNs can fully hide your IP address and have you appear from another region. Otherwise, the Incognito can’t help you with market-based searches.

But one of the aspects that let airlines manipulate pricing is your browsing history. Traces of it reside in your browser cookies. So if the airline company sees your consistent interest in one of their flights, you bet the price is going up a notch. Incognito flight hack helps you here because it keeps your browsing sessions anonymous.

Having trouble finding cheap flights with a VPN: solutions

If you want to avoid fluctuating rates, getting a VPN is the cheapest and safest option. However, if you’re using a shady service, you might run into problems such as IP leaks, connectivity issues, and the inability to change your location.

Cheaper Flights VPN Error

Most importantly, you won’t get cheaper flight tickets due to these problems. However, you can easily solve most issues by following these steps:

  • Check for IP and DNS leaks. This usually happens while using a dodgy VPN. To prevent this, make sure the leak protection and kill switch are on. Additionally, you can find various sites where you can check if your IP is showing.
  • Try another server. Hardware disruptions might cause connectivity issues. Hence, disconnect and try another server. You can also try a different country.
  • Clear your browser’s cookies and cache. You leave traces of your information and whereabouts while you browse. Thus, for everything to work smoothly, clean out your browser’s cookies and cache before using a VPN. Changing your browser or using incognito mode also helps.
  • Check for VPN updates. Keeping your VPN service up to date is extremely important. This not only solves usual connectivity issues but keeps you safer online as well.

If you’re still having problems connecting and getting better prices, maybe it’s time to try a different provider? People on Reddit and industry experts recommend NordVPN as the most reliable option. It will instantly change your location, so you can find and book flights cheaper. And if something unexpected happens, professional customer support will help you 24/7.

Do we recommend trying a free VPN for flight booking?

We all love freebies, but getting cheaper flight tickets with a free VPN is basically impossible. Most charge-free services can’t bypass geo-blocks, so getting special deals is out of the question. Even worse, some costless providers can expose your information to third parties or inject malware into your devices. Not to mention, you’ll get very few countries to choose from.

If you want a free VPN for cheap flights, there are 2 options:

  • Get a freemium VPN. Such providers offer a bit of limited but excellent free services. You’ll get basic top-notch security needs covered features, a few servers to choose from, and stable speeds. However, keep in mind that not all free VPNs come risk-free, so we advise opting for a reliable provider like Proton VPN.
  • Grab a VPN with a free trial. That way, you’ll have no limitations, excellent geo-bypassing capabilities, and breakneck speeds. Moreover, you’ll have plenty of locations to choose from, so finding cheap flight tickets will be easier. In that case, why not opt for the industry-leading NordVPN, which offers a 7-day free trial on Android and the trusted 30-day money-return guarantee

I installed NordVPN today and have been experimenting for hours. So far this technique has not given me any better prices. Actually, it has done the exact opposite. In about 90% of cases the prices when using the VPN while set to pretty much any country results in HIGHER ticket prices. I have not found one single case where the ticket prices was less than just doing the search with the VPN turned off or even manually set to USA. I’ve done this several dozen times now with different countries, different destinations and dates, different websites, etc. 100% of the time the price is either exactly the same, or, more often higher.
