IPVanish is one of the oldest VPNs of its kind, with millions of loyal subscribers. It certainly seems like the perfect package, at least from the outside. And when it comes to our other contender, we’re sure that Avast needs no introduction. Founded in 1988, this company knows a thing or two about cybersecurity.

2022 speeds and performance

No matter which VPN you pick, be prepared to experience some drops in speed. However, the best VPNs out there have come up with ways to minimize this downside.

In general, IPVanish brings fast speeds – especially for servers near your physical location. However, what’s astonishing is that it maintains quick upload speeds even for the most remote servers. IPVanish can achieve these breakneck speeds due to the next-gen WireGuard protocol.

On the other hand, Avast SecureLine brings adequate performance, with a prominent highlight on supporting download speeds. Alas, Avast does not have the WireGuard option and relies solely on OpenVPN, which leaves a lot to be desired from their overall performance.

Moreover, Avast SecureLine VPN still uses outdated connection protocols, making their speeds mediocre at best. With the Avast SecureLine VPN, you are more likely to experience lag, problems streaming videos in HD, and interrupted connections.

That being said, if you are looking for an even faster VPN than IPVanish, you may want to check our fastest VPNs list. For those interested in an in-depth speed observation, check out our VPN speed comparison and testing tool.

Having a large server fleet gives a great advantage in accessing foreign content libraries and slightly improves overall VPN performance. It’s essential to consider this aspect when picking a suitable VPN service.

IPVanish has 2000+ servers in 50+ countries. In addition, the provider owns and operates all of its physical servers, adding an extra layer of security to the service. This is an enormous advantage since it ensures IPVanish’s hardware can’t be tampered with by third parties.

Their smaller contender Avast SecureLine VPN provides 700+ servers in 34+ countries. Even though the connection options offered by Avast are far less than those provided by IPVanish, the service is also flying under the radar. This ensures that Avast SecureLine VPN’s servers are less congested, preserving the connection options and browsing speeds.

Price is an important factor to consider when choosing between service providers. Both discussed here offer standard VPN pricing with increasing discounts for their long-term plans.

The VPNs are fairly different in their pricing. IPVanish is the cheaper option compared to Avast VPN. The former lacks a free trial and only provides a 30-day money-back guarantee, but you also get the VIPRE antivirus for free. The latter, on the other hand, offers a 7-day free trial in addition to their 30-day money-back guarantee, just without any free bonuses.

IPVanish pricing

IPVanish customers have a choice between these subscription plans:

IPVanish subscription options

Their longest 1-year subscription plan also offers a 69% discount. You can also get alternative deals by utilizing these IPVanish coupon codes. Although the provider doesn’t offer any free trial options, it provides a 30-day money-back guarantee, which allows you to test its service completely risk-free.

Currently, you can pay for an IPVanish subscription only via a credit card or PayPal. Sadly, there are no anonymous payment options.

Avast SecureLine VPN pricing

Those interested in what Avast SecureLine VPN has to offer currently can choose between these subscription plans:

  • $4.60/month when buying their 1-year subscription plan
  • $4.20/month when buying their 2-year subscription plan
  • $3.75/month when buying their 3-year subscription plan

Avast VPN subscription options

Avast SecureLine’s longest plan – 3 years – currently comes with a 53% discount. Yet it’s still more expensive that IPVanish’s one year deal. There are no options for a shorter subscription that the annual plan, but at least all plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee. You can also try it before buying with the 7-day free trial version.

With a significant lack of features, however, there might be better low-price options for you to consider. If you are interested in a cheap yet great VPN provider, you may want to check out our cheapest VPNs list.

You can be sure that all your basic security needs will be met with either provider as both have the essential VPN features. Moreover, with all the privacy threats posed online, the protection that such services offer is one of the main aspects to consider when choosing the best provider.

IPVanish security features

IPVanish is a long-standing VPN. It supports an array of modern tunneling protocols (WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2) backed up by 256-bit AES encryption. And the provider offers all the basic security features you would expect from a reliable VPN.

IPVanish is based in the United States, which is known not to be a very privacy-friendly location. That being said, the provider upholds a strict no-logs policy, guaranteeing your online activity is not available to any third parties.

  • OpenVPN Scramble feature. It masks VPN usage, making it appear as regular web traffic.
  • Wireguard. This tunneling protocol allows you to achieve fast connection speeds and protects your online activity. With IPVanish, it is now available for FireOS, macOS, iOS, and Android devices.
  • SOCKS5 proxy. It allows torrenters to hide their IP address without enabling a VPN connection. This proxy gets configured with the torrent client. However, it does not provide encryption.
  • Split tunneling. Allows you to choose which of your applications should go through the VPN tunnel. At the moment, this feature is available on Android only.

You can check all that IPVanish has to offer for your security and privacy in our IPVanish review.

Avast SecureLine VPN security features

The same level of encryption comes with Avast SecureLine, but there’s a significant difference. This one relies on two protocols only: OpenVPN for Android and PC and IPSec for macOS and iOS.

That being said, Avast SecureLine VPN is based in the Czech Republic. Europe is known to be more privacy-friendly, and the Czech Republic is outside the jurisdiction of the Fourteen Eyes Alliance. On the downside, Avast keeps connection logs of its users, which largely diminishes trust in this provider and the level of privacy it is able to offer.

In terms of features, its customers can enable Smart VPN. This mode automatically turns your VPN on and off, ensuring that you are protected when you most need it. For example, it turns on the connection automatically when you’re connecting via a public Wi-Fi network.

VPN services tend to have more similarities than differences in terms of their compatibility. IPVanish and Avast SecureLine VPN are no exception. For example, both have dedicated applications for the most widely used operating systems. However, there are some key aspects to consider when choosing the right service for you.

Ever since it came to the market, IPVanish was more oriented toward tech enthusiasts. This VPN comes with a somewhat outdated design – but hugely powerful, nonetheless. It gives real-time stats about your connection and allows users to fine-tune even the smallest of details.

However, don’t think that IPVanish is an overly complicated technical solution. We’re sure even completely inexperienced users won’t have any trouble using it. Plus, it has no device connection limit, meaning you can use it on every device you own.

Avast SecureLine has positioned itself as a fully automated solution. It comes with a straightforward UI where you get to pick from different servers and easily connect and disconnect from them. You can’t play around with different settings or fine-tune your user experience, though. Avast SecureLine VPN allows only these customizations:

  • Interface language change. You can choose from roughly 44 languages to use on your Avast application, making it one of the most multilingual VPN providers out there.
  • Enable Avast SecureLine notifications and receive beta updates
  • Automatic protection. Switch on the VPN automatically when using an unsecured Wi-Fi network or as soon as your computer starts.

Therefore, we recommend it for those who want a fully streamlined solution. With 10 simultaneous connections and Chrome & Firefox browser extensions, Avast poses significant competition to its bigger contender – IPVanish.

Torrenting & P2P

Nowadays, torrenting has a bad reputation due to its association with pirating copyrighted material. That being said, P2P file-sharing is completely legal as long as you are not exchanging such content. Just keep in mind you’re still making yourself vulnerable to viruses, third-party attacks, and potential personal data leaks.

Avid torrent enthusiasts understand the importance of having fast download speeds. However, here’s a piece of shocking information – Avast only partially supports torrenting via specialized P2P servers. To make things worse, the lack of a strict no-logs policy makes Avast SecureLine an unreliable option for this pastime activity.

On the other hand, IPVanish comes with a torrenting-friendly policy. It fully supports torrenting over all of its P2P servers, hiding everything you do online. Even though the headquarters of the service is located in the United States – a not-so-privacy-friendly location – its strict no-logs policy ensures that your torrenting efforts are protected.

Our tests have proven that IPVanish isn’t the best tool for media streaming. When it comes to Netflix, IPVanish successfully unblocks US Netflix from abroad. Other than that, the service is unable to access libraries from other countries. Thankfully, we had better luck with CBS and NBC.

Avast SecureLine comes with servers that are optimized for unblocking the US version of Netflix – and these servers work without a hitch. We even managed to unblock Netflix with random US servers, so you have some freedom to experiment (and perhaps gain faster performance).

IPVanish was known as a reliable method of overcoming China’s Deep Packet Inspection (DPI). This has changed recently, though, with China blocking this provider’s IP addresses.

Luckily, subscribers have the Scramble OpenVPN traffic feature available. Enabled, it disguises your VPN traffic, allowing you to bypass the Great Firewall of China. However, this service is not very reliable for this purpose.

When it comes to Avast SecureLine, it’s even worse. None of this company’s products work in China, even if you install this VPN outside the country.

Customer support service is vital for any VPN. There is an enormous difference between resolving your issue instantaneously via live chat or waiting days on end for an emailed response.

IPVanish reigns supreme again with 24/7 live chat and even the option to call the support via phone. With Avast, you’ll have to make do with emails and perusing their knowledgebase.

It’s disappointing that neither of them can break the China firewall. Just based on this I wouldn’t choose either of them. I just think there are better options (for any needs) like Astrill VPN for example. They can do anything these two do and much more.
