Should you use a totally free VPN for Firestick?

While 100% free VPNs for Firestick look good on paper, sadly, they are lacking compared to their premium counterparts. For starters, most no-pay services can’t bypass geo-blocks due to very few servers and blacklisted IP addresses. So, if you want to unblock more content, you’ll need the best Firestick VPN.

Not to mention, there are data limitations, abysmal speeds, and overcrowded servers that will ruin your streaming experience. And if that’s not enough, no-pay providers often compromise your privacy by selling your data to advertisers and other third parties.

Plus, unlike the multi-device VPN, free virtual private networks usually offer only 1 or 2 simultaneous connections. That, of course, is not enough, especially if you want to protect all of your smart gadgets.

Therefore, a better option is to pick a freemium or a free trial VPN. They won’t compromise your safety, and you’ll be totally private. Additionally, you’ll be able to stream new things on Firestick without any obnoxious curbs or interferences.

How we picked the best free VPN for Fire Stick

Picking the top free VPNs for Fire Stick is no easy task since there are so many options. Most of them aren’t great, so we had to decide on a few essential criteria to help filter out the best from the rest.

  • Price. Unsurprisingly, we had to limit the options to services with free plans, trials, and money-back guarantees. Plus, subscription prices should be affordable if you ever decide to commit to a paid plan. Meanwhile, fully-free providers are out of the question as they’re notorious for collecting user data and being unreliable.
  • Device compatibility. If an Amazon Fire TV app isn’t available, the provider should at least be compatible with Android. That way, you’ll be able to sideload the VPN onto your Fire Stick. You may also configure the VPN on a router if that’s not up your alley.
  • Speed. A pleasant experience on Amazon Fire Stick is only possible if the VPN provides top-notch connectivity for lag-free video streaming. This can be ensured using modern tunneling protocols, for example, WireGuard.
  • Servers. Free VPNs typically have an abysmal selection of servers. Despite that, it’s possible to find a provider with server options near your location for optimal connection quality.
  • Security. Besides essential security, virtual private networks can protect against ads, trackers, malware, and viruses via bonus features. Make sure your provider is prepared against the online threats you’re most concerned about.
  • Privacy. Confidentiality is guaranteed if a VPN sticks to a no-logs policy, provides anonymous payment options, and resides outside Five Eyes jurisdiction. Bonus points if a third party audited the service.
  • Customer support. Setting up a VPN on Amazon Fire Stick can be tricky if there’s no dedicated app. In such cases, it’s great to have knowledgeable customer support agents to turn to, ideally available 24/7.

VPN not working with Fire Stick

Free VPNs for FireOS are more prone to issues than premium options. If you ever come across problems while trying to unblock content on the Fire Stick, try some of these fixes.

  • Connect to a different server. Usually the problem lies with a particular server, not the VPN as a whole. Therefore, reconnecting to a different one is the simplest and sometimes the best option.
  • Check if the IP changed. Go to the settings menu of your Amazon Fire TV. Click on device, then about. There you should see the IP address of your device. Make sure it matches the IP of the VPN server. Otherwise, you’re dealing with an IP leak and potentially faulty virtual private network.
  • Update the VPN software. Perhaps something doesn’t work because your VPN app is out of date. Check the version on your device and whether it’s the latest one.

If nothing works, try contacting your VPN provider’s customer support. They’ll be able to help with your particular issue. Otherwise, you may have to contend with the fact that a free VPN for Amazon Fire Stick isn’t necessarily the best option.

I need something that will work well with my Fire TV. Do all of these work on it? Thanks guys.

  2. Magra

I haven’t tried TunnelBear but heard good things about it. I want something for my firestick, a free option for now. I may opt for a paid vpn soon but not right now.

  3. DreamyRobot

I’m actually surprised to see ProtonVPN in the sixth spot since I think it might be the best firestick VPN out there, when it comes to free options of course. Streaming will work great with Proton and with Windscribe which I also tested. For me, Proton worked just a bit better than Windscribe but the differences are sometimes very small. TunnelBear has certain limitations like that bandwidth cap that annoys me. If I were a beginner I would definitely try Proton and Windscribe first and only afterwards go for other options. Proton VPN is a very good, free options for anything except torrenting which shouldn’t rely on free tools anyway.

  4. Jackie P

Is it really necessary to use a VPN on the fire tv ? I mean if you’re only using apps like Netflix or Molotov Tv do you really need one ? Even a free one ? I can understand that if you use Kodi on the firestick it’s better with a VPN but just for Netflix I’m not so sure.

  5. Cojl

As a free vpn for firestick I also think Windscribe is a great option. It might not be the best choice if you want to use Kodi for streaming movies (well, when you use Kodi I think you should get a paid VPN anyhow) but if you need something basic that still works fine, Windscribe is a very good option.

  6. Rumisa

I have personally used ZenMate and I think it is the best VPN when it comes to choosing a Free VPN for your firestick.

    1. Amer

OMG! Did you just mention Zenmate? have actually used it for other purposes and it was horrible lol. Maybe you should try Tunnel bear or Proton vpn either but I personally think Windscribe is the best vpn for firestick

  7. Mabel

I remember back in the day when I was upset when Amazon said certain content wasn’t available in my region. It’s not that I was upset but I didn’t do anything to fix this. I’m thankful I learned about using VPNs for my Firestick and now I just watch what I want.

  8. Brinda.89

For me, TunnerBear works great for firestick streaming! Moreover, the app is readily available on Amazon Fire Stick.

  9. Bobby

Had this issue for a long time with my Amazon FireStick. I’m glad there is a solution to solve this problem. Planing to use Hide.me VPN app.

  10. David Look

Windscribe seems to be the cheapest/free VPN option for Kodi and Amazon firestick although the speed is a bit slower when using the free plan. I paid for the yearly subscription of $49 three days ago and found it to be literally very fast and stable. Would recommend it 10x’s over again
