It’s no overstatement to say Kodi revolutionized the way we consume TV shows and films. While Netflix and other similar platforms brought their own paradigm shifts, they weren’t open to everyone with an internet connection. The same can’t be said about Kodi – accessibility isn’t one of its issues. Making full use of this access, however, is risky business. Hence, looking into the best VPN for Kodi is not a bad idea!
Kodi has third-party addons that will let you stream pirated material. In that sense, it’s just like torrenting, only much simpler. Just like torrenting, using a controversial Kodi addon carries its own risks – copyright violations can be very expensive! That’s where VPN comes in. Virtual Private Networks are the best way to make yourself anonymous on the Internet.
1. NordVPN ‣
It so happens that specialization works rarely in the VPN space. Versatile tools are usually some of the best at doing any one thing, mostly because they can afford it. This is the case with NordVPN, which we consider a Top 2 VPN service overall, as well as the best VPN for Kodi.
Let’s break it down: what do you need from a good Kodi VPN? Clearly, security and performance are of primary importance, but it’s also important to assess whether the VPN can unblock Netflix and other entertainment platforms, as well as whether it’s compatible with Kodi devices.
NordVPN satisfies all these conditions. You won’t find better security anywhere: between the top-notch encryption, exceptional additional features, privacy-friendly jurisdiction, and imperviousness to all kind of leaks, NordVPN is second to none. At 5,200+ servers in 60+ countries, the connection speeds are great (although not the best), and geo-blocking measures are powerless. As are the VPN blocking measures of repressive governments, for that matter. Finally, NordVPN has custom apps for Android TV and is compatible with a wide array of devices you might run Kodi on.
Here’s the kicker – it’s also reasonably priced. You can get a subscription that gives you 6 simultaneous connections for $11.95/month, $6.99/month billed annually, $3.99/month billed every 2 years, or $2.99/month billed every 3 years.
2. ExpressVPN ‣
What we said about NordVPN also applies to ExpressVPN. This is another all-around great VPN that’s either the best or second best in most areas. That’s true for Kodi as well – ExpressVPN will secure you and keep the speed high.
Albeit not as strong security-wise as NordVPN, ExpressVPN can compete in that area with just about any other VPN service. As a matter of fact, when it comes to the raw basics, ExpressVPN is almost indistinguishable from Nord. It will encrypt your data and put it under a strong lock and key – AES-256 (strong enough to keep Prometheus chained to a rock). This VPN has a formidable arsenal of features, including a kill switch, split tunneling, and stealth servers. The latter will ensure your safety in restricted countries (ExpressVPN works in China, Russia, Turkey, Iran, etc.).
Crucially for Kodi users, ExpressVPN is based in the British Virgin Islands. Or rather, it’s registered there, which is essentially the same thing. The BVI has no data retention laws and does not fall under the umbrella of the 5 eyes and 14 eyes country groups. These facts afford ExpressVPN the luxury of a trustworthy no-logging policy. It’s already been tested by law enforcement in Turkey and proved to be as good as it seems on paper.
Among the many ExpressVPN selling points, speed and performance have a special place. This isn’t surprising, because the VPN has 2,000+ servers across 94 countries – both the volume and the spread are some of the biggest on the market. It’s safe to say that ExpressVPN occupies one of the top market positions in terms of speed. Great news for those in search of a fast Kodi VPN!
ExpressVPN has a knack for bypassing geo-blocking measures, including those used by Netflix or BBC iPlayer. You might want to include these streaming platforms in your Kodi collection and Express will let you do that. Finally, this VPN is compatible with many devices. Although it doesn’t have native TV apps, it does have manual setup guides for the MediaStreamer feature and a router app. Running the VPN on your router will ensure the safety of your home connection and let you sidestep the stifling 3 simultaneous connections limit.
Why isn’t it the best VPN for Kodi? A bit too expensive to justify for a very specific purpose. We’ll let you be the judge of that: ExpressVPN goes for $12.95/month, $9.99/month billed every 6 months, or $8.32/month billed annually.
3. TorGuard ‣
The margin separating TorGuard from the very best is so slim it might as well not be there. It easily makes the best VPN for Kodi list as well.
First off, security. The team that created TorGuard is clearly very gifted because their product has no holes to speak of. It has impenetrable AES-256 encryption, which you couldn’t crack with all the time in the world. Hackers can’t get around the encryption, because there are no leaks, and its security features are brilliant. TorGuard’s kill switch is very durable and the program has a wide selection of good security protocols. It’s only unfortunate that the company behind TorGuard is located in the US, which is not exactly Privacy Central.
Secondly, TorGuard’s 3,000+ servers make it fa-fa-fa-FAST! It certainly compares with the best and Kodi users definitely care about speed. Streaming is taxing on your bandwidth – no need to add insult to injury with a low-quality VPN service.
Finally, TorGuard has apps for a variety of different platforms, including the main ones (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android) as well as Linux and routers. Kodi users will appreciate being able to run TorGuard VPN on routers, because that will allow them to use it with Amazon Fire TV (Firestick) and other such devices.
You can get TorGuard for $9.99/month, $6.66/month billed quarterly, $4.99/month billed every six months, or $4.99/month billed annually.
4. CyberGhost ‣
If you want a tool with a different feel but most of the same perks, you might want to try CyberGhost. Despite being a bit worse than the abovementioned tools, this Romania-based VPN has proven to be a heavyweight time and again.
CyberGhost is capable of protecting you from the dangers of copyright infringement. It’s got strong ciphers and the best security protocols. Should your connection break, CyberGhost offers a kill switch to make sure none of your personally identifiable data spills out. The kill switch is critical for a sensitive activity such as streaming Kodi.
We consider Romania a good location to register a VPN – no data retention laws or harmful international treaties, and an overall privacy-friendly atmosphere. We are inclined to believe CyberGhost’s no-logging policy because the little details tell us this company is for real. The risks we see are related to leaking issues. It has been reported that CyberGhost has DNS/WebRTC leaks but it isn’t clear whether that’s still the case. If you intend to buy this VPN – investigate for your own safety.
The service gives you plenty of locations to choose from – 3,500+ servers in 60+ countries. That makes for very good speeds, although not lightning fast. CyberGhost should certainly give you decent enough speeds for streaming wherever you are in the world, but we wouldn’t recommend it for users in China and other restricted countries. The reason being, it doesn’t have good ways of bypassing serious blocking efforts.
One of CyberGhost’s perks is that it is capable of unblocking streaming services like Netflix. Many use Kodi just as a player/media library, and Netflix is an important part of many such libraries.
Unfortunately, it’s not the best service in terms of compatibility – there is no custom router app. However, CyberGhost does support Amazon Fire TV and Fire Stick, if you were wondering. Still, it’s not the best VPN for Kodi. It’s not necessarily a tragedy though, because it will still work with these devices. You will just have to run CyberGhost manually using one of the protocol apps – OpenVPN, IPSec, PPTP, or L2TP/IPSec.
The price is competitive: $12.99/month, $5.25/month billed $63 annually, $3.69/month billed $88.56 every two years, or $2.50/month billed $89.90 every three years.
5. PrivateVPN ‣
Another good shout for Kodi – PrivateVPN. You will not lack for security and speed with this little Network. The Sweden-based service pulls off good privacy features and impressive performance, all the while keeping their size small. PrivateVPN isn’t close to having the server numbers of other top VPNs.
The only security worry for Kodi and PrivateVPN users is the jurisdiction. Sweden hasn’t been the most privacy-friendly country and has also demonstrated a hostile stance towards copyright violations. This is a little worrisome, especially having in mind that many use Kodi in less-than-legal ways (and we, obviously, don’t condone this). All that said, PrivateVPN have stated in no uncertain terms, that they don’t collect any logs and are prepared to move their operations elsewhere if this policy is put in jeopardy.
Other than this concern, PrivateVPN is peachy and a good shout for any best VPN for Kodi list. Their encryption is no worse than the best on the market, and they have all the features necessary to ensure your safety.
Despite the somewhat unimpressive 80+ servers in 59 countries, PrivateVPN will not drag your speed down to the ground. On average, the performance is comparable to some other Top VPNs, although not the speediest ones.
While PrivateVPN doesn’t have a Router app or TV apps, it is compatible with both. Moreover, you can run it through the OpenELEC Kodi addon.
The best part? PrivateVPN offers a great bargain: $7.67/month, $4.88/month billed every 3 months, or $3.82/month billed every 13 months. You’ll be hard-pressed to find this level of quality for less!
6. IPVanish ‣
We’re somewhat reluctant to place IPVanish on the best VPN for Kodi list, but I fear we must.
IPVanish is US-based and that is far from ideal for the privacy-minded. The United States has vicious copyright laws and severe surveillance problems – it’s not the best place to engage in something sensitive. Even worse, data from IPVanish has been used to help prosecute their clients. Normally, that would be the nail in the coffin, but the VPN is currently owned by a different company and they are adamant about their no-logging policy. We’re giving them a chance!
Why is it here regardless?
Jurisdiction and business practices aside, IPVanish has great security credentials – tough encryption, a kill switch, all the important protocols, minimal leaking concerns. They also own all of their 1,100+ servers in 60+ countries, which helps IPVanish ensure practices are followed. Due to this the VPN has also managed to demonstrate amazing speeds that not many can replicate.
Here‘s another point for IPVanish: they have a Router app, and, more interestingly, an Amazon Fire TV app. This makes it a good VPN for use with Kodi on Fire Stick. The service is not very cheap: $10.00/month, $8.99/month billed every 3 months, or $6.49/month billed annually. That said, the subscription includes the ability to have 10 simultaneous connections, which is the double of the usual 5 or 6.
You should add VPN to Kodi – that’s the best way to have a good night’s sleep. With the tools currently on the market, there’s no longer any need to test those copyright laws. And while you’re at it, why not include Netflix, BBC iPlayer, HBO, Hulu and other streaming platforms to your Kodi experience? You can do that just about anywhere with any of the tools on this Best VPN for Kodi list.
