What is ExpressVPN

It is not crowded at the top of the VPN heap. Running a decent anonymity network is not very difficult, but running ExpressVPN is a whole different ball game. Since 2009, when the company began operations, their principal product – ExpressVPN – has been steadily marching forward. At the moment of writing, the tool is offering its users access to one of the most far-flung networks on the market. The server list has 3000+ entries scattered over 90+ countries. This level of expansion speaks to their success-fueled financial prowess and allows for impressive speed test results. If any VPN can get you to your destination, ExpressVPN sure can –  that’s a fact recognized by such respected publications as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch, The BBC, and Forbes.

Power and security are the most notable ExpressVPN characteristics.

The company prides themselves on a lightning-fast product and one that can answer the largest proportion of user needs. In line with this, ExpressVPN has awesome encryption, minimal leaks, great features, lots of apps, and a huge geography of operation that includes even the most oppressive countries on Earth. For all this power, users are paying two prices – a large money price and a small privacy price. While the security given by the ExpressVPN service is beyond reproach, the company’s privacy game could do with a bit of work. They could start by addressing their use of Google Mail Exchange Servers and the Facebook pixel on their website.

For users who can afford both costs and don’t mind the average number of simultaneous connections, ExpressVPN is one of the best choices. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s used for “serious” goals like activism or “frivolous” activities like Netflix and torrenting.

Where is ExpressVPN located and why it matters

Virtual Private Networking greatly depends on trust, and the reason for that is secrecy. Users don’t know what goes on behind closed doors in data centers or corporate offices and a lot of the time they don’t even know where those offices are. Hiding the real company location is a very common practice in the VPN world and the reasoning is simple – compelling someone to hand over data is harder when there are layers of organizational obfuscation to penetrate first. It’s also favorable for users that their VPN is governed by privacy-friendly laws (copyright, data retention, etc.). Finally, although this is rarely mentioned, some jurisdictions have “friendlier” tax rates than others.

ExpressVPN Location: Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands

The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is in many ways a perfect offshore VPN location, but there is room for reservation as well. The good part is that the BVI has no data retention laws and is not part of the Fourteen Eyes country groups. This means ExpressVPN is free to pursue a Privacy Policy their users would find appropriate. Also, the BVI is known for having 0% corporate and 0% income tax – something we can’t help but think played a hand in ExpressVPN’s decision.

Perhaps the more important aspect to discuss in relation to the British Virgin Islands is that they are, obviously, British. ExpressVPN would have you believe that this doesn’t matter at all because it’s not a Crown Dependency (like Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man) and is governed by its own laws. Be that as it may, it seems common sense that the United Kingdom still has some sway over what goes on in the BVI.

Compare ExpressVPN to other providers

While ExpressVPN is a very solid service, that doesn’t mean there’s no competition. So far, ExpressVPN has won all but one comparison. Its only loss came by the hand of NordVPN, our best overall provider. You can check out all the comparisons here.

Available plans and pricing

Pricing is undoubtedly the weakest point of ExpressVPN. While the product is great, it’s not for the price-conscious consumer. ExpressVPN offers 3 different plans and a special affiliate deal – all of which are more expensive than the other VPN services in the Top 10. Granted, most of those services can’t compete with ExpressVPN, making it, in a way, “fair enough.”

Unlike some other VPNs, ExpressVPN only has no free trial and the paid version has a limit of 5 simultaneous connections. The only mitigating factor is that you’re protected from disappointment by their 30-day money-back guarantee. We tried getting a refund for our review and didn’t run into any issues.

From another perspective, the pricing only indicated ExpressVPN’s market position, which, for our money, is pretty high. They are clearly confident that their product has few real competitors. Additionally, the prices haven’t changed much recently – a sign that their position is warranted.

Platforms ExpressVPN supports

ExpressVPN supports some of the biggest numbers of platforms of devices of any VPN service. It has custom apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, Android TV, Kindle Fire, Chromebook, Fire TV & Fire Stick, and routers. Also, on their website, you will find browser extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. Finally, the MediaStreamer feature (SmartDNS) adds smart TVs, game consoles, Chromecast, Roku, and Nvidia Shield.

Of course, that’s not all – ExpressVPN also supports a long list of other platforms without offering custom apps. Users can access the network through freeware OpenVPN apps. Here’s a list of some platforms you can use this way: Ubuntu Studio, Peppermint OS, Maui Linux, Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Korora Project, and Parrot Security.

ExpressVPN can be used for fun!

It’s always a big compliment to say that a VPN is good for the most sensitive user groups: journalists, political activists, whistle-blowers, citizens trying to exercise their freedom of speech under repressive regimes, etc. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t use the service for fun. ExpressVPN will allow you to stream Netflix, watch geo-restricted content, download torrents, and much more.

ExpressVPN will get you into any Netflix library, including the most sought-after Netflix US. Over the past couple of years, the streaming giant has managed to break the nerve of most VPN services, forcing them to admit that they can’t keep up with the pace of blocking. Only one or two top products can confidently say that they have remained reliably unblocked. ExpressVPN happens to be one of them. Additionally, the nice spread of server locations and the overall performance means that a decent connection will likely let you stream Netflix in Ultra HD or HD when connected to almost any location. Connecting from Europe, we had speeds insufficient for Ultra HD when using only Australian servers.

We haven’t yet tested Express with some of the other streaming platforms – Hulu, BBC iPlayer, Amazon Prime, etc. With that being said, ExpressVPN’s website suggests that their product is equally good for those platforms too, and reviews seem to support this.

Finally, the awesome security credentials of ExpressVPN make it one of the best for Kodi and all of its third-party pirate streaming add-ons.

Torrenting and P2P

ExpressVPN does not discriminate against P2P traffic – the network neither blocks it nor throttles connection speeds to discourage users. In terms of convenience for users, ExpressVPN is probably the best torrenting VPN service because it doesn’t even limit which servers you can use for P2P. It’s also among the fastest, most secure services on the market.

In their own words: “Open the uTorrent application with the VPN turned on and start torrenting with peace of mind.”

China? Yes! ExpressVPN works in China

Uncertainty surrounds the topic of VPN usage in China. The country has varied means of blocking these services – server IP blocking, DNS blocking, and OpenVPN traffic blocking through the use of Deep Packet Inspection. It is unclear how the country combines these different tools, but one thing is clear – to some extent, most VPNs have issues in China. ExpressVPN has been able to remain a good choice for Chinese users, although it doesn’t necessarily have the biggest arsenal against the Great Firewall. Part of its success can probably be attributed to ExpressVPN having been able to maintain a constant expansion of their server list, giving China ever new IPs to block.

There is always some secrecy attached to the way VPNs get around China’s efforts to sabotage their services. Products like NordVPN, TorGuard, and VyprVPN have “Obfuscated servers” or “stealth protocols.” Meanwhile, ExpressVPN just tells you to put the protocol on “Automatic” and connect to one of three specific server locations. This probably means they get around DPI by going through their formidable roster of security protocols.

Whatever the case may be, there’s no arguing with the fact that ExpressVPN works!
