It's not quite affordable enough to justify itself as a bargain, and it doesn't have quite enough features to make it really stand out.

What is IPVanish VPN

IPVanish is one of the best-known VPN services to originate from the United States. But what is it known for? And is it truly the “World’s Best VPN Service”?

First, we must mention that IPVanish owns all of their 8.8+ servers located in 50+ countries, while most competitors also use shared and rented servers or even virtual servers. It also has more than 40,000 shared IPs and allows up to 10 simultaneous connections, which is two times more than almost any competitor.

Unfortunately, IPVanish is also known for its drawbacks. One you can hardly blame them for is running the company from the US – a Founding Member of the Five Eyes Alliance and otherwise infamous for its government surveillance (think NSA for starters).

Another, however, is one we certainly can blame IPVanish for – it has been caught logging user data, jeopardizing its reputation as a no-logs VPN service. Even though it’s been more than two years since the scandal, IPVanish is yet to offer an anonymous payment option (credit cards and PayPal is all users get), shunning users concerned about their privacy.

If that alone wasn’t enough, IPVanish struggles to provide an efficient service outside of North America and Europe. This VPN is not known for unblocking multiple Netflix libraries or working in China, despite its broad server network and numerous IP addresses. Nevertheless, great security features and above-average speed is still a sought-after combination in the VPN industry, which IPVanish just manages to deliver.

Where IPVanish VPN is based and why it is important

IPVanish VPN is based in the US, a Founding Member of the Five Eyes Alliance. This means that IPVanish is subject to some of the heaviest surveillance. Being in the US also makes IPVanish subject to tough data retention and anti-piracy laws. Cooperating with Intelligence is also something US companies can hardly avoid. And due to the Five Eyes agreement, US intelligence will be eager to share your personal data with Canada, the UK, New Zealand, or a wider 14 country alliance. On the other hand, this information shouldn’t worry you much unless you’re into some seriously illegal stuff.

While the intelligence-sharing agreement leaves the chance that your data will be transferred outside the US, one should be more concerned about the NSA and other governmental institutions regularly spying on internet users. With this in mind, you will always have a better chance of staying anonymous with a VPN, such as IPVanish, when compared to an unencrypted connection, which leaves enough data to track you down, if necessary.

Compare IPVanish to other VPN providers

So far, IPVanish VPN has been compared with ten providers, winning three. But that doesn’t mean that IPVanish waves white flag before the guns are fired. We will be making more comparisons in the future where we should definitely see this VPN as a winner.

Available plans and pricing

IPVanish has a strange way of representing its pricing plans. According to its website, picking the priciest monthly plan still lets you save money because it used to be even pricier in the past.

However, this is nothing compared to the fact that IPVanish doesn’t have a two-year plan, not to mention anything longer. Therefore, while other VPNs have their annual plan somewhere in the middle discount-wise, IPVanish and its modest discount certainly look less attractive.

These plans are certainly not among the cheapest, letting you question the overall bang-for-the-buck ratio of IPVanish.

However, IPVanish offers 250 GB of SugarSync encrypted storage and backup for all plans, which certainly raises the value of their deals. After all, most of us have already run out of storage space in our free Google and Dropbox accounts.

IPVanish has a 30-day money-back guarantee, but there’s one caveat. Apple users should register not via the Apple Store, but from the IPVanish website. Otherwise, they won’t be eligible for the money-back guarantee.

Unfortunately, payment options are also not the IPVanish forte. It accepts a range of credit cards and PayPal but offers no anonymous payment option.

Unfortunately, we are yet to see IPVanish launching a browser extension. At least one for the most popular Chrome browser would be nice, especially since more and more competitors are offering apps for Firefox and even Opera.

Using IPVanish VPN for streaming, torrenting, and China

IPVanish for Streaming

Our speed tests and streaming trials have shown that IPVanish is far from the best VPN for streaming. The bandwidth was good enough to watch HD content from the US Netflix library, but loading versions from Canada or the UK proved to be too much. Which is ultimately irrelevant, because IPVanish is not known for its ability to unblock Netflix.

While most users report difficulties connecting to Hulu, some people will take comfort in the fact that IPVanish will let them access the BBC iPlayer. Finally, another great aspect for those who want to stream content using IPVanish is the app variety, especially the Amazon Fire TV app.

IPVanish for Torrents

the pirate bay torrenting

While some VPNs won’t even allow P2P file sharing, IPVanish is very good for torrenting, mostly because of its vast network of self-owned servers and IPs. There’s also no bandwidth limit. But what makes torrenting with IPVanish really special is its SOCKS5 proxy server. Using it hides your identity while allowing for maximum possible downloading speed.

IPVanish for China

IPVanish support states clearly that their VPN will probably not work in China due to extensive IP address blacklisting. Their only offer is to manually configure the client for the L2TP/IPSec protocol on any of the four major platforms and hope for the best. Even if you manage to connect. The L2TP/IPSec protocol is less secure than OpenVPN, which can present an issue for Chinese users.

IPVanish VPN history

The biggest event in the company’s history is also their biggest stain, which even the new management finds difficult to remove. In 2016, IPVanish was caught logging user data, leading to serious repercussions and a significant blow to their reputation, which suffers even today.

Homeland Security was able to identify a customer of IPVanish as a suspect in a cybercrime investigation. They then proceeded to get his name, email, VPN subscription details, real IP address, and connection timestamps from IPVanish. This was a hard blow to the company, which claimed to have a no-logging policy.
