Best Italy VPN providers in 2025

After extensive testing, NordVPN stood out as the best VPN for Italy, with four Italian locations (Rome, Naples, Palermo, and Milan). Additionally, NordVPN has over 7,100 servers in 118+ countries, providing vast coverage that allows users to access content from various regions easily. For a free Italy VPN option, Proton VPN is the most reliable choice, offering unlimited bandwidth on its free plan and strong privacy protections.
With the right Italy VPN, you can stream Italian content from anywhere, unlocking platforms like Netflix Italy, DAZN Italy, Sky Italia, Mediaset Infinity, and RaiPlay. These services are geo-restricted, meaning you’ll need an Italian IP address to watch your favorite shows, movies, and live sports while abroad.
A VPN lets you bypass these blocks effortlessly, ensuring fast and smooth streaming without buffering. Plus, even if you're in Italy, a VPN enhances your privacy by encrypting your traffic and preventing ISP throttling.
Not all VPNs work well for streaming, so I’ve tested the best options. Keep reading to find out which VPNs provide reliable access to Italian content with the best speeds and security.

Best VPNs for Italy: in 2025: detailed review
Using a VPN in Italy is completely legal and is not restricted by the Italian government, except for using a VPN for criminal activities. Overall, you can freely use a VPN to protect your internet data and access websites from anywhere without any legal concerns.
At VPNpro, we prioritize privacy and have rigorously tested numerous VPNs to evaluate their speeds, data leak protection, content unblocking capabilities, and more. We've identified the best VPNs available on the market while also considering additional factors to determine the top VPN for Italy. Below, you’ll find a detailed list of my tried-and-tested VPNs for Italy that offer plenty of servers in Italy, excellent speeds, and robust security features.
1. NordVPN - best Italy VPN overall
Panama

118
452 Mbps
-
60+ servers located in Italy
-
Consistent 468+ Mbps speeds
-
Extremely robust security features
-
Only up to 10 simultaneous connections
NordVPN is the best VPN for Italy as it offers 60+ Italian servers, 10+ Gbps connection speeds, great geo-unblocking capabilities, and robust security features. Additionally, it works seamlessly unblocking both Italian and foreign streaming platforms.
Servers. NordVPN has 60+ servers in Italy, spread across 4 key cities – Rome, Naples, Palermo, and Milan. Overall, the provider has more than 7100+ servers in 118+ countries, offering great usability in unblocking foreign content. This feature is enhanced by the 1970+ servers in the US and 440+ servers in the UK, and streaming-specific servers, perfect for unblocking and streaming on such platforms as Hulu, HBO Max, ESPN, YouTube TV, and US Netflix library.

Speed. I did my own in-house testing of NordVPN’s Italian server speeds by connecting to several servers in different cities. Unsurprisingly, no matter which server or city I chose, I got consistent 468+ Mbps connection speeds with up to 94% initial speed retention rate. This makes NordVPN the fastest VPN for Italy in the industry.
Security features. NordVPN has several security features important for browsing in Italy, including AES-256 encryption to hide your activities from being tracked by the government. Additionally, there’s the IP & DNS leak protection, which comes very handy in unblocking geo-restricted content. Plus, to name a few more, NordVPN offers obfuscated servers for additional anonymity and a double hop feature for even better security.
Pricing and free plan. NordVPN does not have a free plan, offering instead a 7-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee. I strongly recommend taking advantage of these options and using a robust premium VPN, instead of relying on dubious free services. NordVPN subscription prices start at $3.09/month, which makes up for a great price-to-feature ratio.

2. Surfshark - fast and secure VPN for Italy
Netherlands
3200
100
405 Mbps
-
Unlimited simultaneous connections
-
Servers in Rome and Milan
-
466+ Gbps connection speeds

Some features cost extra
Surfshark is the best VPN for Italy, especially if you’re looking for a service with unlimited connections while not compromising on speed and security. On top of that, Surfshark is excellent at geo-unblocking and works great for streaming.
Servers. In total, Surfshark has over 3200+ servers in 100+ countries. On this list, there are numerous servers located in Italy (Rome and Milan), over 600 servers in the US, and more than 200 in the UK. Such a diverse server fleet ensures you’ll never run into trouble with congested servers or unavailable locations. Plus, you’ll easily unblock and stream the US Netflix library, Hulu, HBO Max, and more with special streaming-optimized servers.
Speed. When I tested Surfshark’s server speeds, I noticed great consistency between servers and countries. For instance, I got 466 Mbps connection speed when connected to Milan and the same speed when connected to one of the US servers. What’s more, Surfshark has an initial speed retention rate of 92%, which is good news if your internet speeds aren’t the highest.

Security features. Surfshark is brimming with various security features, starting with a third-party verified no-logs policy. This means none of your activities are ever tracked and logged while also being protected with AES-256 encryption from onlookers all the time. Additionally, the providers offer a Camouflage mode to mask your VPN traffic and a NoBorders mode to unblock geo-restricted content in countries where other VPNs might not be able to. Lastly, your real IP address is always protected by a reliable kill switch.
Pricing and free plan. Surfshark does not have a free plan; however, you can try it out during the 7-day free trial or extend the period with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Subscription prices start at $2.19/month making it one of the more affordable premium VPNs around.

3. Total VPN - Italian VPN to access content worldwide
UK
50
35
179 Mbps
-
Servers in Italy, the US, and the UK
-
Highly affordable
-
Beginner-friendly interface
-
Lacks some advanced features
Total VPN is a perfect Italian VPN as it is highly affordable and offers servers in Italy, US, UK as well as other countries worldwide. Plus, it’s very reliable at geo-unblocking and offers surprisingly good speeds.
Servers. Total VPN operates a compact fleet of 50+ servers in 35+ countries. In this lineup, there are readily-available servers in Italy, UK (London and Manchester), and US (12 cities in 11 states). And while this is a significantly smaller fleet than competitors’ I never had an issue of running into congested or ill-performing servers.
Speed. Because Total VPN has WireGuard tunneling protocol for a choice, I did my tests using it, as it is one of the fastest protocols in the industry. So, I got 428 Mbps speeds on Italian servers and the same consistent speeds on UK and US servers. The initial speed retention rate is a bit lower than competitors, hovering around 85%. This means that if you have a poor internet connection to begin with, you might feel the impact while using this Italian VPN.
Security features. Total VPN has all the necessary security features to make it a reliable VPN, including AES-256 encryption to safeguard your activities, a kill switch to protect your IP address, and an additional IP & DNS leak protection feature. And while Total VPN does not have obfuscated servers it is still very capable of unblocking both foreign and local streaming platforms, including US Netflix, HBO Max, RaiPlay, and more.

Pricing and free plan. Total VPN offers a free version limited to servers in Amsterdam, Iceland, and Singapore while also subjecting users to a bandwith cap of 2 Mbps. This means, you won’t be able to stream anything with it, but it will reliably encrypt your traffic nevertheless. If you’d rather get a full-featured version, Total VPN subscriptions start at just $1.59/month and come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

4. Proton VPN - great VPN with both free and paid plans for Italy
Switzerland
9900
117
423 Mbps
-
Huge server fleet
-
Strict no-logs policy
-
Has a free version
-
Paid version is pricier than average
Proton VPN is an excellent VPN for Italy, offering both free and paid plans. Additionally, this Swiss-based provider is known for its iron-clad no-logs policy and robust security features.
Servers. Proton VPN operates an enormous fleet consisting of 9900+ servers in 117+ countries. In this list, there are 10 servers in Milan, Italy, close to 30 servers in the UK, and around 40 servers in the US. This nice server and location dispersion make Proton VPN highly effective in unblocking geo-restricted content and is perfect for those who travel a lot.
Speed. I was very happy with the speeds I got when testing Proton VPN as they often reached up to 428 Mbps and were very consistent even with faraway servers. That’s all thanks to the VPN Accelerator feature that can make distant connections up to 4 times faster. All in all, this sort of speed is perfect for all sorts of network activities. Lastly, I got around 90% initial speed retention rate, which is also quite high.
Security features. Besides the military-grade AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, and an IP & DNS leak protection, Proton VPN also offers Secure Core feature that re-routes your traffic through two servers, instead of one. This enhances your security significantly, but does slow down the connection speeds. Plus, Proton VPN has a Stealth protocol if you need to bypass any form of advanced internet censorship.
Pricing and free plan. Proton VPN probably has the best free version around, with the same security features, unlimited data, and bandwidth. The only thing that is limited, is your server choices narrowed to The Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, and the US. However, if you need more servers and available countries, then be prepared to pay around $3.59/month for a subscription. Remember, all your purchases are protected with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

5. Bitdefender - easy-to-use VPN for an Italy IP address
Romania
4000
50
241 Mbps
-
Very cheap with long-term subscriptions
-
Has servers in Italy
-
Offers both free and paid versions
-
Slightly slower connection speeds
Bitdefender is a great user-friendly VPN that will give you an Italy IP address any time you need it. With servers in Italy, the UK, and the US, it’s perfect not only for unlocking foreign geo-restricted content but also for accessing Italian sites when traveling abroad.
Servers. Bitdefender operates a mid-sized fleet of 4000+ servers in 50+ countries. While the provider does not state how many exactly servers are in each country, its customer support confirmed that it has servers in Italy. However, you cannot choose specific cities with Italian servers, while the options in the UK are broader with 2 city choices and the US with 15 server location choices. However, even without being able to choose a specific server, I easily accessed RaiPlay, DAZN Italy, TV8, and Mediaset while abroad. Additionally, I also had no issue accessing foreign streaming services, such as US Netflix, ESPN, or HBO Max, just to name a few.

Speeds. When I tested the speeds while connected to Italian servers, they kept at around 422 Mbps, with the initial speed retention rate hovering at 89%. I also found similar speeds with the UK and US servers, but faraway connections were significantly slower at around 364 Mbps and 335 Mbps with the servers in Japan and Singapore. So, if your goal is to access exotic content, Bitdefender might not be the ultimate best choice.
Security features. Bitdefender is very effective in masking and protecting your true IP address from leaks while also safeguarding your traffic with the AES-256 encryption. Additionally, your browsing experience can be made smoother with the Ad & Tracker Blocker feature, while split tunneling will ensure your network traffic is used in the most efficient way if you have a slower connection.
Price and free plan. Bitdefender has a free plan available; however, it is highly limited. First of all, you can’t choose a server, and you’ll be connected to the nearest available one when you need it. Plus, there’s a daily data cap of 200 M,B which is insufficient for streaming. So, I’d recommend choosing the full paid version, which starts at an extremely affordable $2.92/month. Lastly, all your purchases are protected with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How I tested and selected the best Italian VPN
Before compiling my list of the best Italian VPNs, I put over 20 of the most popular providers through rigorous testing and reviewing. Only those who matched the high standards of unblocking capabilities, security measures, speed tests, and more made it to the final list. Here’s what and how I tested with each VPN:
- Server locations. A truly good Italy VPN needs to have plenty of local servers available, in cities like Milan, Rome, and Palermo. That’s simply because the closer you are to the server – the better speed, lower latency, and more stable connection you’ll get. Additionally, each VPN should have plenty of servers abroad in countries like the US, UK, Germany, and more, so you can easily unblock geo-restricted content.
- Unblocking capabilities. I checked if the VPNs on my list are capable of unblocking Italian streaming sites from the USA, such as RaiPlay, DAZN Italy, Italian Netflix, Mediaset Infinity, and Sky Italia. Then, I checked a reverse situation by trying to get into USA geo-restricted content in Italy, such as the US Netflix library, ESPN, HBO Max, and Hulu. Only the VPNs that unlocked all of the sites got into the final list.
- Speed test. I did my own in-house testing on VPN speeds by using a tool called SpeedTest. For the tests to be fair, I always chose the fastest available tunnelling protocol, such as NordLynx or WireGuard, and performed my tests while connected to several servers in Italy, and servers located in the US and UK. My goal was to only include VPNs with speeds greater than 400 Mbps, so you’d be able to stream content lag-free and in high quality.
- Security measures. The best VPNs for Italy should all have AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption, as other encryption versions aren’t as safe and robust and might not protect you well enough from government interference. In addition to that, I looked for VPNs with third-party verified no-logs policies so you could be sure none of your data is ever logged or stored. Lastly, I checked if my chosen VPNs keep your true IP address sealed tight by performing tests on Ipleak.net.
- Subscription prices. Last, but not least, I wanted to make sure you’ll be getting the most out of your buck with decent price-to-feature ratios, considering the subscription prices of these Italian VPNs. In the end, I included both very affordable VPNs and premium ones so you could choose based on your own particular needs.

Why do you need a VPN in Italy?
Italy belongs to the 14-Eyes intelligence alliance, allowing it to track and share internet user activity with other countries in this alliance. Furthermore, without a reliable VPN, your network activities are unprotected, putting sensitive data at risk. Lastly, a VPN helps to unblock geo-restricted sites and content, allowing you to browse more freely. Here’s a more detailed breakdown of why do you need a VPN in Italy:
- Enhance privacy and anonymity. Because Italy is a member of the 14-Eyes alliance, your network activities can be tracked and shared with the other member countries of this intelligence alliance. However, a reliable VPN encrypts your network traffic, making it indecipherable to ISPs and preventing the government from tracking user activities.
- Access restricted content and blocked sites. A VPN can change your virtual IP address in an instant, granting you access to otherwise geo-restricted content. So, if you’re wondering how to watch HBO Max in Italy or other foreign streaming platforms such as Hulu, ESPN, YouTube TV, or US Netflix, then using a VPN is the most straightforward solution. Additionally, a VPN can also help you access Italian streaming sites, such as RaiPlay, DAZN Italy, Mediaset Infinity, and Sky Italia when you’re traveling or staying abroad by giving you an Italy IP address.
- Browse the internet securely. A VPN can greatly enhance your browsing security by encrypting your network traffic, which is especially important if you use unsafe public WiFi connections. Even if you’re not using public WiFi, unencrypted traffic can be an easy target for hackers and snoopers. This can also be easily solved by using a VPN.
How to get an Italian IP address in USA
The fastest way to get an Italian IP address is by using a VPN. It’s simple to set up and requires no technical expertise. Just select an Italian server from the list, connect, and instantly get an Italian IP.
Here’s how to get an Italian IP address with a VPN:
- Subscribe to a VPN that offers servers in Italy, like NordVPN.
-
Download and install the VPN onto your device.
-

- That’s it – now you have an Italian IP address and can access any geo-restricted website.

Is there a free VPN for Italy?
If you simply want to hide your IP address and encrypt your traffic for anonymity, you can use the free Proton VPN version, which has servers in The Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, and the US. To get Proton VPN, you simply need to head to its official website or an app store on your phone. From there, look for the Proton VPN app, download it, subscribe, and enjoy the free VPN on your laptop, phone, or tablet. Remember that the free version does not have servers in Italy but comes with unlimited bandwidth and data.
However, I strongly recommend against using suspicious free VPNs. Such VPNs usually have only a few available servers, which are often congested, come with crippling daily data caps, and could be infected with malware. Lastly, free VPNs still need to make money somehow, and they usually do so by monetizing your sensitive data. So, either choose the unpaid Proton VPN version, or one of our recommended free VPNs.
Ultimately, if you need a truly reliable VPN with plenty of Italian servers available, great geo-unblocking capabilities, and robust security features, I recommend choosing a premium VPN with a free trial and a money-back guarantee. For instance, both NordVPN and Surfshark offer all of the features I mentioned above, plus they come with 7-day free trials and 30-day money-back guarantees.
VPNs for Italy that didn't make the top list
VPN with the most servers in Italy: | NordVPN has 60+ servers in Italy, located in Milan, Rome, Naples, and Palermo, now with 77% off! |
VPNs without servers in Italy: | VPN Unlimited, Privado VPN, Hola VPN, Betternet |
Not all VPNs are suitable for Italy, and during my in-house tests, I found some to be either sub-par or even potentially dangerous. Here are some of them that did not make it to my list:
- VPN Unlimited and Hola VPN do not have any servers in Italy. Additionally, Hola VPN is based on a P2P model, rerouting your traffic through users’ devices, making it potentially unsafe.
- Betternet – although it does have servers in Italy, it has been known to log user data and often fails at unblocking geo-restricted content.
- TunnelBear – this VPN has Italian servers in its free version; however, it also comes with a very restrictive 2 GB monthly data cap. Plus, it often struggles to unblock popular streaming sites, such as US Netflix.
- HideMyAss – while it does have Italian servers, it almost completely failed to unblock both Italian and foreign content during testing. Additionally, the service’s privacy policy is also far from ideal.
- Windscribe – offers Italian servers in its free version, but comes with a 10 GB monthly data cap and works poorly unblocking US streaming sites, such as HBO Max and Disney+.
What Italian websites can you access with Italy VPN?
An Italian VPN allows you to access all of the most popular Italian streaming services. For instance, you can gain access to RaiPlay, which is a free Italian streaming platform of Italy’s national broadcaster Rai, offering live TV, news, and a wide library of Italian shows, movies, and documentaries. Then there are Sky Italia, Mediaset Infinity, and the Italian Netflix, which have many on-demand movies, series, shows, and local content. Lastly, if you’re into sports, you can get into DAZN Italy for live coverage of Serie A and the UEFA Championships. Here’s a more detailed look at what content you can find on the Italian streaming platforms:
Platform | Content |
RaiPlay | Don Matteo, Inspector Montalbano, Sanremo Music Festival |
DAZN Italy | Serie A matches, UEFA Champions League, MotoGP |
Mediaset Infinity | Grande Fratello VIP (Big Brother VIP), Le Iene, Striscia la Notizia |
Netflix Italy | Suburra: Blood on Rome, Curon, The Law According to Lidia Poët |
Sky Italia | Gomorrah, Diavoli (Devils), Live Serie A and Formula 1 coverage |

Final thoughts: do you really need a VPN for Italy?
Italy is a part of the 14-Eyes alliance, which means the government is allowed to track your network activities and share them with the other countries in the alliance if such a need arises. Additionally, with regular browsing, you might often find yourself left behind with geo-restricted content unavailable in your country. Luckily, that can all be solved with an Italian VPN.
A VPN is capable of masking your real IP address and granting you access to otherwise geo-restricted content. What’s more, a VPN encrypts your network traffic, making it imperceptible to onlookers, including the government. My top recommendation for an Italy VPN is NordVPN, as it comes with extremely robust security features, has the most Italian servers available, and works with the fastest connection speeds in the industry.
