If you want a free VPN for Kodi, make sure it’s one with maximum security and privacy. It will ensure that all of your online activities are hidden from the prying eyes of your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Furthermore, using a trustworthy VPN is crucial because a lot of the free VPNs out there have some questionable practices in place. For starters, it’s unclear how “truly free” VPNs manage to maintain their infrastructure. A common method is to log your personal data and browsing habits, then to sell that information to online advertisers.

This is why we’ve selected a list of the top 10 free VPN services for Kodi in 2021. Naturally, they’re not as good as a worthwhile premium VPN service, but you can’t expect perfection without any downsides. Check them out and see which combination of pros and cons is most suitable for you.

NordVPN has 5100 servers in 60 countries, giving you unrestricted access in a wide range of areas around the globe. Plus, it’s wicked fast with the proprietary NordLynx tunneling protocol. It’s also secured with AES-256 encryption and an audited no-logs policy.

Once claimed, you can utilize the VPN on an unlimited number of devices. Naturally, you can also take advantage of the 30-day money-back guarantee to try out the service even further.

  • Free
  • Good security
  • 24/7 email support
  • Unblocks Netflix US
  • Allows torrenting
  • WireGuard tunneling protocol
  • Few countries
  • Apps lack features

Although Atlas VPN does not have a dedicated app for Kodi, its fast connection speeds and generous 10GB/month data cap make it one of the best free options for reliable streaming. It also comes packed with an internet kill switch to ensure that your IP address does not leak in case of disaster.

The free version comes with some limitations as well. First off, you’ll only get three server locations – Amsterdam, Los Angeles, and New York. Some mild speed reduction is also expected, as the best servers are reserved for premium users only, but the fast WireGuard protocol surely does its job. The free version is not optimized for unblocking geo-restricted content either. Finally, you’re constrained to only one simultaneous connection.

In any case, Atlas VPN is definitely worth a shot if the other VPN providers don’t live up to your expectations.

4. ProtonVPN

  • Plus version will get you Netflix and Hulu
  • Apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android
  • 10 simultaneous connections
  • Few P2P servers
  • Not good in China

ProtonVPN has already attracted a lot of attention by providing one of the most secure and private free services. Its strict no logs policy, IP & DNS leak protection, and kill switch all contribute to the high level of online security and privacy.

When it comes to Kodi, your anonymity is certainly secured with ProtonVPN. Another great advantage is that this service has unlimited monthly bandwidth. However, it’s also worth mentioning that the free version only offers three server locations to choose from. Plus, your connection speeds will be throttled slightly.

For a deeper investigation of ProtonVPN, read our ProtonVPN review.

5. Windscribe VPN

  • Ad and malware blocking
  • No live chat support
  • Complicated refund policy

Windscribe offers a generous 10 GB/month and 13 servers to choose from. With this service, you may have just enough speed to enjoy music and video streaming. It also supports major platforms and more, such as Amazon Fire TV. In fact, it even has an app for Kodi!

What’s more, Windscribe VPN is one of the safest free services that I feel like recommending for Kodi. It has a good selection of security and privacy features that make Windscribe one of the best VPNs for Kodi.

For a deeper investigation of Windscribe VPN, read our Windscribe VPN review.

6. Hotspot Shield

Number of countries covered
Number of countries covered:
85
Number of servers
Number of servers:
1800
Support
Support:
24/7 live chat
  • Free version
  • Fast speeds
  • Great for Netflix
  • Supports all major platforms
  • Super-fast connection times
  • 24/7 live chat
  • Questionable privacy, invasive data practices
  • WireGuard protocol not supported
  • Costs a bit too much

Hotspot Shield gives you a daily allowance of 500MB of browsing data. Although that doesn’t seem like much, it’s actually quite good compared to most. However, although this service is usually one of the fastest on the market with its proprietary Hydra protocol, the free version has a 2 Mbps bandwidth limit. It’s also limited to only one simultaneous connection and only to servers in the USA.

Regardless, it’s a great choice, especially for users in the US. It’s available on a wide range of devices, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, and Kodi.

For a deeper investigation of Hotspot Shield, read our Hotspot Shield review.

7. Hide Me VPN

Number of countries covered
Number of countries covered:

Support:
Live chat
  • Good security credentials
  • Decent geographical variety
  • Works in China
  • Not bad for torrenting
  • Minimal logging
  • Good connection speeds
  • Free version
  • No router app

Another great freemium option worth considering is Hide Me VPN. The free version comes with a generous 10GB/month data cap. And although you can only connect one device at a time, you can choose from five different locations around the world. Plus, you don’t even need to create an account to use the VPN.

Furthermore, the free version has no ads and does not log your data in any way. Additionally, the free version has many of the security features that the premium version has, such as split tunneling, a kill switch, AES-256 encryption, and a wide selection of secure tunneling protocols.

For a deeper investigation of Hide Me VPN, read our Hide Me VPN review.

8. ZoogVPN

Number of countries covered
Number of countries covered:
26
Support
Support:
24/7 live chat
  • Can access Netflix
  • Supports torrenting
  • Decent for preserving privacy
  • Good speeds
  • Free plan
  • Not many features
  • Small network

With 10GB of browsing data per month, ZoogVPN is a good choice for browsing or streaming movies on Kodi. As usual, the free version comes with some limitations compared to the premium version.

First off, you can only connect one device simultaneously with a single account. It also comes with limited P2P capabilities, although it does not store any logs whatsoever. It’s worth noting that this VPN might perform better than most due to 128-bit encryption. However, this can be considered a serious red flag in terms of security.

For a deeper investigation of ZoogVPN, read our ZoogVPN review.

9. Speedify

Number of countries covered
Number of countries covered:

Number of servers
Number of servers:

  • Very fast
  • Allows torrenting
  • Has a kill switch
  • Allows up to 5 devices on Personal Plan
  • Offers money-back guarantee
  • Great for those with slower or less stable connections
  • Limited customer service
  • Limited servers in Asia-Pacific
  • No Netflix
  • Under US jurisdiction
  • Doesn’t work in China

Speedify offers less monthly data than most freemium services – only 2GB/month. However, it comes with barely any limitations compared to the premium version.

For starters, it allows five simultaneous connections, which is quite uncommon for free VPNs for Kodi. You can also access the entire 200 server network in 35 countries, including the special P2P servers. Furthermore, you can even take the VPN for a spin without creating an account to maximize your privacy. It’s also easy to use and available on a wide variety of platforms.

For a deeper investigation of Speedify, read our Speedify review.

10. TunnelBear

  • Free version (500 MB/month)

  • Founded in Canada (Five Eyes)
  • Only 20+ countries
  • No money-back guarantee
  • No support for gaming consoles, Fire TV Stick, or routers
  • No live chat
  • No support for P2P
  • No Netflix

TunnelBear is one of the most well-known VPN brands out there. However, it’s not known for a generous free version. It only gives you 500MB of data per month, which is abysmal compared to the rest in this list.

However, it does not restrict you in any other way. You can still access all 1800 servers in 34 countries worldwide. Plus, all the strong security features are still there, including a kill switch and GhostBear – a special tunneling protocol against heavy censorship.

Why do I need a VPN for Kodi?

In essence, A VPN for Kodi gives you a few key benefits:

  • The ability to change your location and get around geo-restrictions of streaming services
  • Security from various online threats
  • Privacy from your ISP and other online snoopers

With Kodi, you can access all kinds of media libraries to stream. Of course, you need to have a valid account for Netflix or other platforms.

But what if your desired content platform is unavailable in your country? That’s where a VPN steps in. A VPN will allow you to connect to a server in the US or other locations and stream your desired videos or music. It can also help you avoid blackouts for live sports or get the latest content as soon as it’s available.

In itself, Kodi is just a media playback tool. That means you won’t be able to stream anything unless you add a source. And for that, you need to install third-party add-ons. This is where a situation becomes complicated.

You’ll probably need more than a few Kodi add-ons to satisfy your streaming needs. However, while the core app can be considered more or less safe, each add-on poses a risk because of possible security vulnerabilities. Those include malware injection, keyloggers, man-in-the-middle attacks, etc. Therefore, using Kodi add-ons is less dangerous if you encrypt your traffic with a VPN and hide your IP address.

What’s more, some add-ons offer illegal content. So if you don’t use a VPN, your IP address and location becomes visible to your ISP and your government. As a result, you may have to pay a fine even if you didn’t know that you were streaming illegally.

Free VPN limitations

You need a decent internet connection to stream in HD and a pretty good one for 4K. That’s especially important if you’re watching live – something many Kodi users do. Naturally, a free VPN needs to offer fast enough speeds.

The problem is that all VPNs slow down your connection due to encryption. While that’s inevitable, some free VPN services also add speed caps that make things even worse. Therefore, you should look for a free Kodi VPN without speed caps.

Finally, you should test the speed for yourself. Sometimes your location and your ISP have more to do with the number of Mbps than a VPN itself. The results might differ even among your devices. That’s why I recommend trying out several free VPNs for Kodi to stream at the best possible quality.

Furthermore, most free VPNs cap not only your connection speed but also the amount of data. Usually, you’ll be able to download somewhere between 1 GB and 10 GB per month. Knowing that HD quality videos are pretty big, such strict limits may result in you not finishing the final episode and waiting two weeks to continue.

Risks of using a free VPN with Kodi

Not all free Kodi VPNs are made equal. Some are made from sugar, spice, and everything nice, while others are made from other nasty bits, such as:

  • Monitoring of your online activities
  • Logging of your personal data
  • Selling your data to advertisers
  • Potential malware and malicious ads

You can easily spot such one if it doesn’t have a premium version and doesn’t show ads. Such free VPNs might even inject your device with malware to steal passwords and online banking information.

Luckily, there are a few reputable free VPNs for Kodi. You can find them listed in this article above. All ten companies have kept themselves away from scandals while staying true to their strict no-logging policies. With these free Kodi VPNs, you can be sure that your traffic isn’t monitored and sold, and your IP address is safe from third parties, including your ISP, your government, and hackers.

FAQ

Is there a good free VPN for Kodi?

Yes, there is. The best VPN for Kodi is NordVPN. You can get a 7-day free trial on Android and then try the VPN out on Kodi. Plus, it also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee. giving you a total of 37 risk-free days.

Is it risky to use Kodi without a VPN?

Using Kodi is not considered risky. However, using Kodi add-ons is.

That’s because not all of them are developed by well-known and reputable companies. Some third-party Kodi add-ons might inject your computer or phone with malware. Others might log your keystrokes to steal passwords and online banking data. However, this becomes much more complicated if you encrypt your traffic by using a Kodi VPN.

Even if your chosen Kodi add-on is completely safe, chances are the content it provides is illegal. If you don’t use a VPN to hide your real IP address and location, you might get a fine for copyright infringement.

How do I download a free VPN on Kodi?

The fastest way to download a free Kodi VPN is to pick one of the top choices overviewed in this article and visit its official website from any of our links. For example, NordVPN can be downloaded from nordvpn.com. After that, you only need to create an account and download the free VPN for Kodi on your selected device. That’s it – you’re ready to stream safely!

Kodi is an awesome way to enjoy content but I am done with using free VPNs for it or for anything else for that matter. I just don’t feel safe doing so. Up until recently I didn’t know exactly what I was doing but now that I know I wouldn’t use such a service with a free vpn. No way.

  2. Parker

ProtonVPN is great. If they’d only add a P2P functionality they would clearly become the best when it comes to a free vpn. Right now I like them but I need more.

  3. Alberto

I’m using Kodi on my Smart TV and have been using Windscribe (the free version) for a short while. While I am happy with it, I’ve recently heard some things that made me want to consider getting their paid version soon (like in a few days). I just want to be safe when using Kodi.

  4. Joshua

While I am almost totally against using a free vpn because of many, many reasons like privacy concerns, if I were to choose one, I would go with ProtonVPN. I tried their free and paid versions a while back and they were very good. The speed was good even on the free version which was very impressive.

  5. Jen

I am very addicted to streaming songs in different languages. But as you mentioned in this article, there can be a number of legal obligations while using the Open source applications. Can I still be traced if I try to install Kodi, locally? Because I wana enjoy the good and free stuff.

  6. Vicky

I have pretty well very experience with HotSpot shield but this VPN service has very limited traffic cap allowed and with the slow p2p downloading speed as well. Do you think I should give a try to Windscribe VPN in the first place, or go straight for a paid one?

  7. Phil

Well, from what I’ve read on your site, and I’ve read at least 10 or so articles I think it seems like Windscribe and Proton VPN are the best when it comes to the free options with good speed, servers, easy setting up without the need for a tutorial, etc. I’m not yet ready to go the paid route so I’ll probably try these VPNs that you mentioned. I’ll start with Proton because I know they did a fantastic job on their free version which from what I’ve heard and I agree with you, could be the best free VPN out there. I wouldn’t even touch most of the ones you advised against like Betternet; what a name they took – it’s the exact opposite of what they are.

  8. Charlie G

I’m not completely sure that Free VPN standalone apps like the ones on the list are best suited for Kodi, if plan on being safe it’s better to pay. But I guess depending on the budget it can still work fine, and the speed looks very decent as well.

    1. avatar
      Ethan Payne Author

Paid VPN apps are certainly better when it comes to legally grey activities – both streaming via Kodi and downloading via P2P – but using a free VPN is still better than nothing, at least in most cases.

  9. Matty

I also think that it is a mistake to install a free VPN for Kodi. It’s just dangerous to do so (just do a search and you will see how dangerous it is) and don’t even get me started on the low speed you will get with a free service. The speed you’ll get will not be enough for your streaming needs, not by a long shot. With a paid option you just don’t have to worry about things and I like to enjoy my Kodi experience not worry about who knows what.

    1. avatar
      Ethan Payne Author

We wouldn’t call it a mistake, more of a last resort. If you notice that the VPN severely slows down your connection after you install it on your desktop or TV and you can’t stream because of the slowdown, it means that you should probably get paid VPN instead. If you can stream just fine, a free VPN will still trump “bareback” streaming.

  10. Rhys Allan

Can you also publish a Kodi guide to tell viewers how to unblock geo-restricted media streams? I know using a VPN is usually recommended, but a guide on this topic will be helpful.

    1. avatar
      Ethan Payne Author

Hey Rhys, we actually already have a post about the importance of using a VPN with Kodi just for this occasion. Be sure to read it, you’ll have all your questions answered.

  11. Shirley Tang

It is good to know that Windscribe VPN supports Android system. Does it also support Windows-based devices as well?

    1. avatar
      Ethan Payne Author

Yes, Shirley, Windscribe supports both Android and Windows, as well as a whole bunch of other platforms, including macOS, Linux, Amazon Fire TV, and routers. You can use Windscribe on pretty much any device you own.

  12. John

This is just mind-blowing Windscribe VPN supports Android-based devices, including Amazon Fire TV for me it’s just a lifesaver. When my Windscribe 10GB expires I will try to switch to VPN Hide Me app.

    1. avatar
      Ethan Payne Author

If budget is an issue, you can switch to the ProtonVPN free version after you reach your Windscribe data cap. It’s got unlimited bandwidth and supports Android as well.

  13. Markos

I love Kodi because you can add so many addons and they’re all so cool. Right now I don’t have plans to get a paid VPN (although that is an option I am considering for the future because you never know) so I started trying out some of the free options. I haven’t yet tried Proton but I’ve already heard nice things about them so I am hopeful. I tried Windscribe and it’s ok but I think there’s probably better ones out there.

    1. avatar
      Ethan Payne Author

Yes, ProtonVPN and Windscribe are your best options, Markos. For Kodi though, we’d recommend going with Proton. The free version offers unlimited data (at the cost of Windscribe’s better speed), which is essential when it comes to streaming.

  14. Kara M

This sounds great ! I always have a doubt when it comes to using a free VPN, but I have to admit ProtonVPN seems great (I’m already using Protonmail). I’m not quite sure how I will be setting up ProtonVPN on Kodi though.

    1. Jan89

Is ProtonMail a paid VPN? I’m looking to install a free VPN first, and it looks like I’ll be going with Windscribe VPN as of now

      1. Konrad Strauss

Hi Jan, Windscribe is a great VPN for Kodi, and if you’re looking for help setting up Windscribe on your Kodi player, here’s a guide that will give you all the details, from general information to ways to install it.
