NordVPN is the best Austrian VPN for bypassing geo-restrictions while staying protected at all times. Due to the fast speeds and a large selection of servers, you’ll have no issues accessing local and international content from anywhere.

Has the most Austrian servers

NordVPN has 7400+ servers in 118 countries, including 33 servers in Vienna. Having many servers is beneficial as it ensures you can access your favorite content from anywhere. If you’re outside Austria and still want to enjoy local content, a VPN server in Austria will help you access this. Similarly, if you’re interested in other countries’ content on services like Netflix, NordVPN’s servers worldwide will easily bypass its geo-restrictions. Additionally, even your speed can increase by switching to a less loaded VPN server for a buffer-free browsing experience. I tested this, and NordVPN’s speeds stayed at 99 Mbps while connected to Austria.

Unblocks every Austrian streaming service

I tested NordVPN’s Austrian servers to access local content while being outside of the country. I was happy that NordVPN unlocked ORF, Pluto.tv, ServusTV, and ATV without any issues. Additionally, it had no problems accessing Netflix US and UK libraries, as well as Hulu, Disney+, and BBC iPlayer. To ensure total privacy when streaming Austrian content, enable the kill switch feature, which will disable the internet if your VPN connection drops. Additionally, if you want an extra layer of security, try using Double VPN, which will route your traffic through two VPN locations.

Up to 37 days of free VPN servers in Austria

The starting price for a NordVPN subscription is $3.09/month. If you’re looking for ways to save some money, you can take advantage of NordVPN and use it entirely free for 37 days. All you have to do is get a 7-day free trial, which is available on the Google Play Store. Once the trial expires, you will be charged, but NordVPN has a 30-day money-back guarantee. How I tested Austria VPNs

To ensure that all top Austria VPN providers provide top-notch services, I extensively tested them by considering several factors. Below, you can find a detailed list of what criteria each VPN provider had to meet to make the list as one of the best Austrian VPNs in 2025.

1. Austria server locations: 30%

  • Minimum Requirement: At least one virtual server in Austria.
  • We recommend: Multiple virtual servers in Austria in different cities.

You’ll need a VPN with virtual servers in Austria to access Austrian services outside of the country. Connecting to a virtual Austrian server is essential to avoid Austria's intrusive VPN laws. Additionally, having more Austrian servers reduces speed loss as it shortens the distance between the user and the VPN server. While I focused on Austrian servers, I also selected providers with servers worldwide for global content access.

The best VPN to get an Austrian IP address is NordVPN as it has even 33 servers in the country. Having multiple servers in the same location guarantees a successful VPN connection and fast speeds. Additionally, NordVPN can bypass geo-restrictions, so you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite content from anywhere.

NordVPN's Austrian servers list

2. Austria content streaming: 30%

  • Minimum Requirement: Unblocks a few popular Austrian services.
  • We recommend: Unblocks most Austrian services, including ServusTV, ATV, ORF, and Sky Austria.

Due to licensing agreements, many streaming services are geo-restricted. A VPN is required to access them from anywhere, but not all VPNs can bypass these restrictions. The best VPNs for Austria have servers in various locations, including Austria, for local content access. The VPNpro team regularly tests each provider’s ability to unblock Austrian services while being outside of the country. This includes the most popular services, ServusTV, ATV, ORF, and Sky Austria.

3. Global content streaming: 20%

  • Minimum Requirement: Unblocks a few popular international services.
  • We recommend: Unblocks most international services, including Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video.

Similarly to Austrian content, many popular global streaming services are geo-restricted in specific regions. While some streaming services restrict specific content and have different libraries for different countries, many streaming platforms are geo-restricted to specific regions. To access different Netflix libraries, Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, or BBC iPlayer, you must connect to servers in other countries. The best Austria VPN providers must have servers worldwide for global content streaming.

4. Speed: 10%

  • Minimum Requirement: An average of 60+ Mbps download speed and ping of less than 100 ms.
  • We recommend: An average of 100+ Mbps download speed and ping less than 50 ms.

Using a VPN provider with fast speeds is necessary to ensure a flawless and fast streaming and overall browsing experience. All the best VPNs for Austria use stable and fast tunneling protocols, such as WireGuard, to minimize the impact on your connection speeds. To stream content in HD without any delays or lagging issues, a fast download speed of at least 60 Mbps is necessary.

Best ServusTV VPN
NordVPN Austrian server's speed while browsing ServusTV

5. Security and privacy: 10%

  • Minimum Requirement: Strong encryption and a strict no-logs policy
  • We recommend: Strong encryption, a strict no-logs policy, and additional security features

The main purpose of a VPN is online privacy, which is why it’s important to choose a security-oriented VPN provider. All the best Austrian VPN providers ensure total privacy as they have a strict no-logs policy and use robust AES-256 encryption. To add an extra layer of security while streaming content online, it’s necessary to use features like a kill switch to protect your real IP address from exposure.

How to get an Austria IP address using a VPN

Access to an Austrian IP address can be extra handy if you’re interested in local content and are currently outside the country. A strong VPN server in Austria can help to access all popular Austrian media libraries, including Sky Austria, ORF, or ATV. If you’re a fan of Formula 1, using a VPN to access services like Servus TV or ORF or allows you to watch it completely free. Below, you can find a step-by-step guide on how to access Sky Austria (or any other Austrian service) with a VPN:

Reasons to use an Austrian VPN

While a VPN's main purpose is online privacy, using a good Austrian VPN provider has several benefits. You will not only be protected when browsing the internet but can also access exclusive content from anywhere. Here are a few advantages of an Austrian IP address that you would get when using a VPN:

  • Online privacy: Using a VPN in Austria is highly recommended to protect your digital footprint. A VPN will hide your IP address and encrypt your online traffic, meaning that you’ll stay anonymous while connected to the VPN. Additionally, extra VPN features, such as ad-blockers or kill switches, can enhance your overall VPN experience by adding an extra layer of protection.
  • Bypass geo-restrictions: Many streaming services and other platforms are geo-restricted and accessible only in specific regions. Using an Austrian VPN will grant you access to Austrian content no matter where you’re located. Similarly, a VPN service will also provide servers in other countries for global content access.
  • Free access to Formula 1 and MotoGP: If you’re a Formula 1 or MotoGP fan, you’ll know that it’s not always possible to stream it successfully for free. ORF and ServusTV, Austrian streaming services, both provide completely free access to Formula 1 and MotoGP races. If you’re not located in the country, using an Austrian VPN can allow you access to such services.

Yes, using a VPN in Austria is legal, and no laws prohibit its use for privacy reasons. Austria has laws that protect your rights to online privacy, meaning that using a VPN to hide your IP address and encrypt your data is allowed. While some platforms might not like VPNs, using them for online security is not illegal. However, it’s important to remember that using it as a tool for committing crimes online is against the law, and a VPN will not protect you from the consequences.

Free VPN vs paid VPN: Which is better for an Austrian IP?

While you can use a free VPN to get an Austrian IP address, there are many disadvantages compared to paid services. Free VPNs are usually very limited and provide a very basic level of security. More often, such services do not use the necessary security measures, such as strong encryption, which puts your data at risk. You’ll usually get a limited bandwidth cap, fewer server locations, and even slower speeds with free VPNs. Even if your primary use case for a VPN is streaming, many free VPNs cannot bypass geo-restrictions.

Instead of using a free VPN, I recommend using a premium Austria VPN with a free trial or a money-back guarantee. Premium services like NordVPN or Surfshark use only the strongest AES-256 encryption and have a trustworthy no-logs policy, ensuring your privacy is their top priority. Additionally, due to the wide selection of servers worldwide and additional features, you can stream geo-restricted content and browse the internet without issues.

NordVPN has a 7-day free trial on the Google Play Store, while Surfshark offers a 7-day free trial on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. You can download these free trials on your mobile phone, but you can also use the trial on all personal devices. If you want to use NordVPN and Surfshark for longer without losing any money, take advantage of their 30-day money-back guarantees, which are risk-free.

Which streaming platforms can you unblock with an Austria VPN?

Using a VPN server in Austria will not only secure your privacy online but also grant you access to geo-restricted content from anywhere. By using a VPN, you will be able to get an Austrian IP address while outside of the country. This way, you will get access to various streaming services, gaming sites, or even banking platforms that are only available in Austria. Below, you can find a few popular streaming services and exclusive content that’s only available with an Austrian IP address:

Streaming service Austria exclusive content
ServusTV The Wegscheider, Bergwelten, Talk im Hangar-7, Die Flugretter, Blickwechsel, Trost und Rath: Tanz mit dem Teufel
ORFon Der Bergdoktor, Soko Donau, Ski-WM: ÖSV Herren verpassen Podest, Ohne jede Spur, Klammer - Chasing the Line, Die Fälscher, Totenfrau
ATV (via JOYN) Bauer sucht Frau, Promis unter Palmen - Für Geld mache ich alles!, Die Landarztpraxis, Alpine Ski-WM 2025: Rennen, Fußball: ÖFB-Cup, Soko Kitzbühel
Pluto.tv Das Schwarz-Gelbe Duell, Täterjagd, Ein Fall für Zwei, Der Alte, Germany Shore, EFH Champions League

Additionally, one of the most significant sports events, Formula 1, will also be officially available to watch via Austrian services like ORF and ServusTV. If you’re in a region where Formula 1 will not be streamed, using a good Austrian VPN can easily help to change this. By changing your IP to one from Austria, you will be able to enjoy Formula 1, no matter where you’re located.

Conclusion: Use a reliable and safe VPN for Austria

Austria does not have strict internet restrictions, but it’s always important to secure your digital footprint, no matter where you’re located. Additionally, if you’re interested in accessing other countries’ content, you might experience geo-restrictions. Similarly, if you’re currently traveling outside of Austria, you will not be able to watch your favorite local programs.

Luckily, a reliable VPN for Austria can help to solve such issues. I tested 26 VPN providers to find the best ones, and NordVPN proved to be the best Austrian VPN in 2025. NordVPN successfully bypassed geo-restrictions on local and global streaming services while providing fast speeds. Due to the robust security toolkit and extra security features, NordVPN provides top-notch services that guarantee total privacy when browsing online. The provider ensures a secure and flawless Austrian VPN experience no matter where you’re located.

While I haven’t yet tested ExpressVPN I have found Proton VPN to work well in Austria. The speed is always very high and I’ve never experienced any bad thing with this. NordVPN also looks very nice because it’s one of the best from what I’ve seen and it has a very competitive price.

Currently ExpressVPN and VyprVPN are unable to live stream ORF. VyprVPN has never worked in my experience, however, ExpressVPN was working up until mid December 2018 but then stopped.

I highly recommend Express VPN no matter where you are in the world! Living in Austria might be an online security dream, but hacks exist everywhere and you can never be too safe online.
