How to get a UK IP address featured image

What to consider when picking a UK IP VPN

You’re probably well aware that there are plenty of other VPNs with UK servers. You can choose them if you’d like, but I urge you to take a few minutes to analyze them thoroughly beforehand. After all, a well-performing and reliable VPN is more than just a handful of servers scattered worldwide.

Here’s a list of things we considered when putting this list together. Take these aspects into account when picking an alternative VPN to change your IP address to a UK one.

  • Servers. Most VPNs have servers in coveted locations like the US and UK, although there’s no harm in double-checking. Besides that, figure out who owns the server hardware, the underlying technology, and if virtualization is used to expand the region selection.
  • Speed. The connectivity of a VPN is influenced by the server network and available tunneling protocols. For example, a vast server fleet combined with WireGuard yields minimal speed loss. If you’re still unsure, check out our test of the fastest VPN servers.
  • Security. A VPN can guarantee user anonymity by having reliable security features to prevent IP leaks and other data exposure. Plus, they will protect you against other dangers like online trackers, virus-ridden ads, and malware.
  • Privacy. Besides state-of-the-art encryption, a virtual private network service must adhere to a strict zero-logs policy. Many say they do, but the best way is to check the privacy policy yourself. Alternatively, pick a service that went through independent audits of its no-logs policy.
  • Compatibility. Practically all VPNs are compatible with desktop and mobile devices. But if your needs are greater, check what other apps are available. You’ll get the most bang for your buck by grabbing a router-compatible VPN.
  • Price. Subscription cost isn’t everything in the virtual private network industry. Even cheap VPN services can do many things surprisingly well. Meanwhile, others can be overpriced and unreliable.
  • Customer support. Last but not least, it’s vital to verify what customer support options are available. You never know when you might hit a roadblock and need expert assistance. In any case, 24/7 live chat is paramount.

UK IP VPN not working?

Let’s say you’re connected to a UK IP address and trying to unblock geographically restricted content. However, BBC iPlayer won’t budge, and you still can’t find that special British TV show on Netflix.

What We Do in the Shadows on BBC iPlayer with NordVPN

If that’s the case, your VPN might be running into some issues. No need to worry; there are a few potential fixes you can try.

  • Switch to a different server. The first and easiest solution is to reconnect to another server. Whether the particular server is faulty or the IP address is blocked, this will immediately tackle the problem.
  • Check for IP leaks. If multiple servers aren’t able to change your Netflix region or unblock other geo-restricted content, try checking for IP leaks on a website like dnsleaktest.com. After all, you can’t curb geo-blocking if your true location is exposed.
  • Enable Stealth VPN. Perhaps a particular service is checking for VPN traffic. In that case, you should enable VPN-masking features, if available.
  • Update the software. A virtual private network won’t work correctly if it’s out-of-date. Check for possible updates and try again.

If all else fails, contact customer support. They may have some more tricks up their sleeves. Otherwise, they’ll be able to tell you whether the VPN can even deal with a particular problem.

Can you get a UK IP address for free?

Perhaps you’re unwilling to invest in a paid service and need a free VPN with a UK IP address. Hate to break it to you, but it’s practically impossible to find a reliable option for this scenario.

First, let’s break down the main issues with the no-cost VPNs in general. They can be either completely free or unpaid versions of premium services. Either way, they’ll include some of these drawbacks.

  • Handful of server locations
  • Throttled connection speeds
  • Limited or complete absence of security features
  • Monthly or daily data caps
  • Unreliable geo-block circumvention
  • Excessive data logging

As you can see, no-cost VPNs have practically every kind of limitation imaginable. Even if you find a free UK IP VPN, it won’t unblock geographically restricted content or keep you secure. Instead, it will collect troves of data about you and sell it to compensate for the lack of a subscription.

But if your budget won’t allow a premium subscription and you only need one temporarily, consider VPNs with free trials. You can get the complete package for a limited time and switch providers once you’re done. Otherwise, don’t forget that each UK IP VPN provider we’ve mentioned has a money-back guarantee.

Alternative ways of getting a UK IP address

Even though a VPN is the easiest way to get assigned a UK IP address, you do not always need to use this method to access British content. Here are some alternative ways of getting a UK IP address:

  • Proxy server. Utilizing proxies grants you the IP address of an intermediary server. The proxy acts as a middleman between you and the content you are trying to access. Unlike a VPN, however, your personal information will not get encrypted. Moreover, performance will dip significantly because proxies use older tunneling protocols.
  • Tor browser. A web browser focused on your online privacy and security, Tor is essential for accessing the dark web. It works by redirecting your connection through multiple volunteer-operated encrypted nodes. You can set the end node to be from the UK, thus gaining a UK IP address each time you connect. However, this method greatly reduces connection speed and is unsuitable for streaming.

Conclusion

Although there are many potential ways of changing your IP to a UK one, using a VPN is the best and most reliable method. It guarantees security, privacy, and minimal connection speed loss. Customers can also use the same virtual private network service to get IP addresses from other countries.

FAQ

How can I get a free UK IP address abroad?

There are no reliable ways of getting a free UK IP address abroad. For starters, most no-cost VPN services don’t offer United Kingdom server locations. Plus, they’re usually incapable of unblocking geographically restricted content, for example, BBC iPlayer. Your best option is to grab a VPN with a free trial or utilize a 30-day money-back guarantee.

How do I change my IP address to the UK?

You can change your IP address to the UK or another country by using a VPN. This software redirects your web connection through remote servers and makes it appear that you’re connected from those regions. You can use any VPN with UK servers to get a United Kingdom IP address.

How can I find out if my IP address changed to the UK?

You can verify your IP address online by checking websites like whatsmyip.com. If you’re connected to a VPN but can still see your original IP, your virtual private network is faulty and leaking your true location. You can avoid this issue by using a high-quality VPN service.

Which VPN has the most UK servers?

Not all VPNs disclose how many servers they have in a particular location. Therefore, it’s best to opt for a service with massive overall server fleets. For example, NordVPN has over 6400 servers across 111+ countries.

I don’t currently have one of the five options you suggest for a UK VPN, but I do need to be able to change my IP to UK regions, so I’ll look into NordVPN!

  2. Jordan24 September 21, 2019 at 4:34 pm

How come Nord has so many more servers than anyone else? I know it’s not just about the numbers but damn… They got a lot of them. I’m definitely using this vpn to change location to UK.

  3. Rkiw September 16, 2019 at 4:50 pm

I want to change ip address to UK because I want Netflix UK. It has a few shows I want to see and I can’t from my location. Why don’t these big VPN providers offer some sort of trial run? Even 3 days would be enough for me to see what they can do. I would be much more inclined to buy such a service for an extended period if I could test it for free. Ultimately I guess I’ll have to get a month with one of the top ones and see what it can do.

Is it illegal to change your IP address to another country? I don’t want to do something stupid here. I live in Belgium and would like to find a way to change ip address to UK if that’s legal. Is it ok or am I going to get into trouble if I do something like this? Better safe than sorry.

      Hi Eric,

Yes, it’s legal. There are no laws in Belgium preventing you from using a VPN and thus changing your IP address.

I was looking for a vpn to change location to UK and while there are plenty of them, most are too expensive. I mean their monthly plans are expensive and I don’t see myself going for a 1 or 2 year plan to reduce costs. I just don’t like to have to be tied down for such a long time. What’s the best month to month vpn out there? Anything around $5 monthly would do. I know Nord is probably a great one but that monthly price is killing me. I just want to get a uk ip address so I can unlock BBC iPlayer, that’s all. And I don’t want to pay a lot for this. Is that too much to ask?

    1. Conrad September 12, 2019 at 5:36 pm

I understand where you’re coming from. I felt the same way last year when I first heard about vpns. I wanted to get a UK ip address free of charge 😉 and found a UK ip address list but things didn’t work out as I expected. I realized that it was just too much of a hassle to make this work for free. Then I found out about NordVPN and while it was expensive I needed to try them so I got a month with them. I loved it! And then I decided it was worth it to spend $100 to stay secure online plus have access to all sorts of good stuff (Netflix US, UK, BBC iPlayer, etc) for 3 years! It just sounded like a great deal and I took the plunge. Best decision I made. I can torrent anything without problems or worries, access any site from the UK and US.

      Hi Jon,

Probably the ideal solution for your situation is trying something like Windscribe VPN. This is a service that has the “Build a Plan” pricing option – you choose one server location – in your case, the UK – and pay $1/month per location. Windscribe is otherwise pretty good as well. Hope this helps!

  6. Seven_Sins May 29, 2019 at 2:52 pm

Just subscribe to any vpn service, go to google and type in top 5 best vpn, i use cyberghost but there are a lot more to choose from but i would say don’t go for free if you are serious, once you subscribe you then have the option to use any country you want if they have servers over there. and US is always on their lists so no problem there.

  7. Christie Elizabeth May 9, 2019 at 12:23 am

Getting a UK address may not be the best option since the UK government has recently introduced a certain ban regarding Internet content…sad to see such a liberal country take these actions.

  8. Shana K March 2, 2019 at 5:32 pm

I’ve heard NordVPN is the best, I haven’t tried it yet but I think I will, I’m convinced. From what I’ve heard I can do almost everything with it (like Netflix or torrenting…). Thanks for the list.

  9. notyouraveragegirl February 6, 2019 at 4:54 am

I have been running an online business for 5 years and I must say, it is difficult to penetrate the UK market. I would be trying out one of these VPNs to see if I could penetrate the market there.

  10. Free Alone January 24, 2019 at 7:58 pm

All over the world more people are choosing to acquire a UK based IP address for one reason or another and this could be, because may be they want to access GEO restricted website for banking purposes or they want to watch UK based TV like BBC, iPlayer, iTV or ever the British Netflix catalogue. PrivateVPN is the best actually. I recommend this one for my every virtual friend.
