The number of entertainment options that you can find online in the UK surpasses most of the other countries in the world. However, many services often end up restricting access of non-UK residents due to copyright issues and other potential problems.

If you want to know how to get a UK IP address, we’ve got you covered. Not only will we tell you how to use a VPN to change your IP address to that based in the UK, but we will also recommend five different VPNs that work perfectly in the United Kingdom.

Why people want to change their IP address to the UK

Apart from professionals who might have a number of reasons for wanting to appear as if they are in the UK, people often end up wanting to change their IP address due to the entertainment options available in other counties.

As of right now, BBC iPlayer is only available to British residents. If you want to access any content on iPlayer, you’ll have to spoof your location and change your IP address to the UK. Similarly, Netflix UK also has more content than almost any other region, Japan and the US excluded.

Whether you’re looking to access the greater plethora of movies on Netflix UK or appear as if you live in the United Kingdom, the process is still the same.

We’ll now take you through the process of getting yourself a UK IP address, followed by a guide to some of the best VPNs on the market.

How to get a UK IP address

To get an IP address, you’re going to need a VPN. Simple as that.

All VPNs work in a somewhat similar fashion, so you can apply the following guide to whichever VPN you end up downloading:

  1. Choose your VPN and download the application for your Operating System.
  2. Once the app has been downloaded, you’ll need to open it and login with your credentials.
  3. Then, you will either be shown a map to select a server from, or provided with a list of available servers.
  4. All you need to do is to select a server located in the UK, and you’ll have changed your IP address.

Recommended VPNs

Once you’ve connected to a VPN, you have masked your internet connection. Let us take you through some of the best VPNs that you can use to get a UK IP Address.

1. NordVPN

NordVPN is one of the leading VPN services available on the market today. They offer amazing security and have a total of 5400 servers in 59 countries, the UK included. NordVPN is also easily able to unblock geo-restricted Netflix libraries in most countries.

NordVPN provides you 24/7 live chat support as well, along with a very easy to use interface, which will allow you to change your IP easily. If you’re looking for a premium VPN, look no further than NordVPN.

2. Ivacy VPN

Ivacy VPN service logo

Ivacy VPN is a fairly good and really cheap VPN. Compared to other top VPNs, it doesn’t have a lot of servers, but there are enough in the UK to get the job done for most people. Ivacy has all of the features that you’d expect in an industry-leading VPN but costs only $2.40/month if you subscribe for 2 years (and you get an additional year free).

IvacyVPN is your best bet if you have no use for numerous servers and are only planning to access certain UK services. Ivacy works in China and has good Netflix support, making it your best bet after NordVPN.

3. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN uses its price to set itself apart from the rest of the group. If you’re looking for a cheap solution to a UK IP address, then look no further. You can get access to PrivateVPN for $1.89/month.

PrivateVPN does provide you with a lot of features, but the quality of the service is not as good as either NordVPN or CyberGhost. It does have Netflix support, but like CyberGhost, it might run into problems if you live in China.

4. Private Internet Access

Private Internet Access (PIA) is a last resort. It’s by no means a great VPN, but it might get the job done. It doesn’t work well in China, doesn’t seem to be good for Netflix, and it doesn’t have a good customer support system.

However, the UK servers do work quite well and give you amazing speeds. If you’re not planning to use your VPN for heavy-duty work, then PIA might very well be a decent VPN for you.

5. CyberGhost

CyberGhost service logo

CyberGhost is another great VPN service for getting a UK IP Address. It has a total of 7100 servers in 90 countries, many of which are hosted in the UK. It also works great with Netflix as well as other streaming services and has all the necessary features such as encryption and live chat support.

The main problem with CyberGhost is that it doesn’t always work well in China. If you plan to use your VPN to bypass the Chinese Firewall, then you might run into trouble with CyberGhost.

I don’t currently have one of the five options you suggest for a UK VPN, but I do need to be able to change my IP to UK regions, so I’ll look into NordVPN!

How come Nord has so many more servers than anyone else? I know it’s not just about the numbers but damn… They got a lot of them. I’m definitely using this vpn to change location to UK.

I want to change ip address to UK because I want Netflix UK. It has a few shows I want to see and I can’t from my location. Why don’t these big VPN providers offer some sort of trial run? Even 3 days would be enough for me to see what they can do. I would be much more inclined to buy such a service for an extended period if I could test it for free. Ultimately I guess I’ll have to get a month with one of the top ones and see what it can do.

Is it illegal to change your IP address to another country? I don’t want to do something stupid here. I live in Belgium and would like to find a way to change ip address to UK if that’s legal. Is it ok or am I going to get into trouble if I do something like this? Better safe than sorry.

      Hi Eric,

Yes, it’s legal. There are no laws in Belgium preventing you from using a VPN and thus changing your IP address.

I was looking for a vpn to change location to UK and while there are plenty of them, most are too expensive. I mean their monthly plans are expensive and I don’t see myself going for a 1 or 2 year plan to reduce costs. I just don’t like to have to be tied down for such a long time. What’s the best month to month vpn out there? Anything around $5 monthly would do. I know Nord is probably a great one but that monthly price is killing me. I just want to get a uk ip address so I can unlock BBC iPlayer, that’s all. And I don’t want to pay a lot for this. Is that too much to ask?

I understand where you’re coming from. I felt the same way last year when I first heard about vpns. I wanted to get a UK ip address free of charge 😉 and found a UK ip address list but things didn’t work out as I expected. I realized that it was just too much of a hassle to make this work for free. Then I found out about NordVPN and while it was expensive I needed to try them so I got a month with them. I loved it! And then I decided it was worth it to spend $100 to stay secure online plus have access to all sorts of good stuff (Netflix US, UK, BBC iPlayer, etc) for 3 years! It just sounded like a great deal and I took the plunge. Best decision I made. I can torrent anything without problems or worries, access any site from the UK and US.

      Hi Jon,

Probably the ideal solution for your situation is trying something like Windscribe VPN. This is a service that has the “Build a Plan” pricing option – you choose one server location – in your case, the UK – and pay $1/month per location. Windscribe is otherwise pretty good as well. Hope this helps!

Just subscribe to any vpn service, go to google and type in top 5 best vpn, i use cyberghost but there are a lot more to choose from but i would say don’t go for free if you are serious, once you subscribe you then have the option to use any country you want if they have servers over there. and US is always on their lists so no problem there.

Getting a UK address may not be the best option since the UK government has recently introduced a certain ban regarding Internet content…sad to see such a liberal country take these actions.

  8. Shana K

I’ve heard NordVPN is the best, I haven’t tried it yet but I think I will, I’m convinced. From what I’ve heard I can do almost everything with it (like Netflix or torrenting…). Thanks for the list.

I have been running an online business for 5 years and I must say, it is difficult to penetrate the UK market. I would be trying out one of these VPNs to see if I could penetrate the market there.

  10. Free Alone

All over the world more people are choosing to acquire a UK based IP address for one reason or another and this could be, because may be they want to access GEO restricted website for banking purposes or they want to watch UK based TV like BBC, iPlayer, iTV or ever the British Netflix catalogue. PrivateVPN is the best actually. I recommend this one for my every virtual friend.
