The United States is at the forefront of internet development. Many of the web-based companies are found in the US. Even those that are not found there almost certainly provide their services in the US. Services like HBO GO, Crackle, etc. are all US-only, meaning they can only be accessed if you have a US IP address.

Even websites and services that are available outside the US, such as Netflix, might not provide a full library of content to outside users because of certain copyright laws. So, you need a US IP address to have complete access to websites such as Netflix.

Sometimes, content is geo-blocked, meaning they’re restricted based on a user’s geographic location. By changing your IP address, you are effectively hiding your location and routing traffic through a location of your choice. This can give you access to content otherwise unavailable to you.

How to get a US IP address

Here are the steps you can take to get a US IP address on a Windows computer.

  1. Download a VPN and Install it by following the set of instructions given in setup.
  2. Once installed, open the application. It will ask for your credentials to log in.
  3. Once logged in, you will see a list of servers and a map indicating their position on it. You can either click on the pin placed on the US in the map or select the US server from the list.
  4. Once selected, the pin on the US will turn green.
  5. Close the application window. Your IP address has been changed to a US IP address.

Best VPNs to Get a US IP Address

Most of the VPNs have the same process with a few variations. Though many VPN services are available, there are some which are better than others. We will now take you through some of the best VPNs that you can use if you want to spoof your location and appear as if you are connected from the US.

1. NordVPN

NordVPN service logo

NordVPN boasts leading connectivity in the VPN industry thanks to its proprietary NordLynx tunneling protocol. It has 5200 servers in 60 countries, including the US, and it supports all major platforms and devices.

NordVPN also provides 24/7 live chat support. Like ExpressVPN, it also provides access to the Netflix library that is available to US IP addresses. It also lets you access other US-based services, such as Hulu. NordVPN also has great pricing, starting at $3.71/month.

2. IPVanish

IPVanish service logo

IPVanish is a versatile VPN with numerous benefits. First off, it provides top-notch speed with the open-source WireGuard tunneling protocol. Secondly, a single account can secure an unlimited number of devices. Plus, customers can choose from over 1900 servers, many of which are in the US. And since the service owns all server hardware, optimal connections and zero interference from third parties are guaranteed.

Best of all, you can try out the VPN with the help of its 30-day money-back guarantee. Otherwise, IPVanish pricing starts at $3.75/month.

3. PrivateVPN

PrivateVPN is smaller than other VPNs in the list but also lacks in some of the features available in ExpressVPN or NordVPN. It has proper security protocols and decent encryption. It might not be the fastest VPN out there, but it is quite usable.

However, it is based in Sweden, which is not an ideal place for a VPN service as they have a strong stance toward copyright infringements which is what these services are used for quite often. It can, however, be used to access Netflix US and make all the content available there.

The main reason for which PrivateVPN stands out is its pricing. It is very cheap, starting at $2.00/month and going to $8.99/month. It is a good deal for people who don’t need top-tier security but require a VPN for tasks such as accessing the US Netflix library and other geo-location services.

4. TorGuard

TorGuard service logo

TorGuard is also a great VPN service. It has some of the best security features, including very robust encryption technology, a kill switch, and everything else you expect from a top-quality VPN.

It is also a great VPN to for people in China as it can bypass the Great Firewall of China. Their pricing plans, however, are very confusing. As far as we can tell, their plans vary from $3.89/month to $9.99/month, making them quite competitive.

5. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN service logo

ExpressVPN is good  VPN services since it provides solid performance in all the tasks that a VPN should perform such as security, performance, support, and features. It is lauded for its security throughout the VPN community.

Express VPN is also available on all of the mainstream Operating Systems including macOS, Windows, Android, iOS, and Linux. They also have 24/7 live chat support and great support for Netflix as well as torrents. However, all of these perks do come with one drawback: it’s costly, starting at $8.32/month and goes all the way up to $12.95/month.

And that’s it! With your US IP address by using one of these amazing VPNs listed above, you can enjoy everything that people in the US can.

I’ve never really understood why copyright doesn’t go global! The internet has broken down barriers, and creative media needs to catch up. Thanks for showing us how to get a USA IP address the easy way!

  2. Holmes

Heard a lot of good things about NordVpn and after seeing it at work at a friend’s house, I decided to go ahead and get that amazing 3 year Nordvpn deal. That things is insane! Love it!

  3. Comanche

Before reading this page I was tempted by IPVanish but then I was leaning towards NordVPN so I gave it a go. You can get a free us ip address but that won’t help much if you want to unlock Netflix US like I do. It’s been a week and I now couldn’t live without Nord. I can browse anonymously, use Netflix, BBC iPlayer, torrent anything without feeling unsafe. When this month is over I am getting the 2 year plan or maybe the 3 year one.

Could I get a free us ip address using a free VPN? I don’t currently have money for a paid one and I tried a us ip address generator that didn’t work at all :(. I don’t mind if it doesn’t work very well or doesn’t offer the speed of a paid version, I just want something for now. I will probably have to get a paid one eventually but for now, free is all I can afford :)). Any reply is appreciated.

Like Julie said, (not an expert at this) you could try Proton VPN, the free option, and see if that works. Not sure about it so use it and see for yourself. I guess it depends on what you need it for. If you just want to browse with ip address from another country this could work ok. If you want something more advanced it will probably not work very well or at all. I think that if you want a us ip address for netflix then you will need a paid vpn. I highly recommend NordVPN for netflix and anything else because you will get the best service for the best price (if you choose a 1 year plan or more).

      Hi there Deno,

Although we normally don’t recommend using free VPNs, largely because A LOT of free VPNs simply won’t work, or even worse might harm you, there are still some free VPNs that can get you a free US IP address.

Our highest recommended free VPNs are ProtonVPN and Windscribe, and they can certainly get you a free US IP address with no problem. You can see more great options in our best free VPN services list.

      1. Deno90

Thanks for that list, Julie. Have tried ProtonVPN since you recommend it and it works ok. After reading what you and Cesar said, I think I will also give NordVPN a test for a month to see if it works well and then we’ll see. I want to browse with ip address from another country and Proton can do this but I also want to know how to change ip address to usa for netflix and it seems that I have to pay to do this. Proton seems enough for basic needs like browsing more securely and making sure almost no one is watching you when you’re on the internet. But the free plan doesn’t work for more advanced things like unlocking Netflix or BBC iPlayer not to mention torrenting. If you want to torrent something, Proton doesn’t help you there. Nord, on the other hand has special servers just for this, which is very cool and would mean I can have great download speeds.

Google for VPN, or perhaps better yet, “VPN Review” and pick one that will work in your country. Many have free trials or free versions. Try one or several out. Make sure they do not keep logs or monitor your traffic in any other way.

Using ExpressVPN has opened my Internet experience to many websites and streaming sites. This is how it should be for all people, but sadly companies love to restrict their websites.

Thanks for the guide it really helps, I wasn’t sure how this was possible and if it was possible. It doesn’t seem that hard to do so I’ll try this. Thanks again !

As a business owner having clients from different parts of the world, I think having a VPN to get US IP address would be very beneficial especially when dealing with stringent businesses in the US

However, IPVanish offers a very few settings and not going to fight a very extensive customization. I’m real impressed with this blog description. Thank you for your dedication and hard work.
