Sky is one of many internet service providers (ISPs) in the UK. And while it has a large number of customers, the service comes packaged with some unwanted features as well.

One such “benefit” is Sky Broadband Shield. It’s an internet filter that’s meant to block dangerous and inappropriate websites. It’s built with good intentions, but it tends to restrict too much traffic. As such, people are looking for ways to get around it.

A great tool for that is a VPN (Virtual Private Network). It can bypass Sky Broadband Shield by redirecting your connection through a remote server and hiding your traffic from your ISP. Of course, a VPN has other uses as well, which we will outline further in this article.

How to Bypass Sky Broadband Shield

Want total access to the internet without restrictions? Here’s how to bypass the Sky Broadband Shield using a VPN:

  1. Choose a VPN with servers in the UK. Our top suggestion is NordVPN, currently available for 68% off

Why do you need a VPN for Sky Broadband Shield?

Internet Service Providers have a lot of control over your internet. In extreme cases, they can throttle data during specific activities, such as streaming and torrenting. Alternatively, they impose certain restrictions with the best intentions, yet they go overboard and block off too much of the internet.

Such is the case with Sky Broadband Shield. It’s a set of tools that blocks various harmful websites, such as pornography, online gambling, spam, phishing, and even malware websites. Essentially, it’s built to protect children from the dangers of the internet.

However, the filter is enabled by default and is active practically all the time. Plus, it also blocks inconspicuous pages, such as social media, forums, and news publications. Therefore, it’s fair to say that the filter goes overboard and blocks off too much of the web.

How a VPN helps against Sky (and geo-blocks)

Thankfully, you can use a VPN to bypass Sky Broadband Shield. A VPN works by rerouting your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel. The connection then goes through a remote server that is in a different location and unaffected by your internet service provider.

That way, any restrictions are removed, and you gain access to an unfiltered internet. Plus, your online activities are encrypted with military-grade encryption, ensuring that no one can see what you’re up to on the web.

Plus, a VPN can be used for so many different purposes as well. For example, you can unblock additional movies and TV shows on streaming services like Netflix. All you have to do is connect to a server in a different country, and then you gain access to that country’s library. So if you ever get tired of the UK library, you can use a VPN to access the expansive US or any other library.

Alternatively, you can use a VPN to visit websites that are typically blocked on certain networks. That could be a social media site at work or online games at school, such as Pokemon GO. Plus, a VPN connection provides security when connecting to public networks, which typically leaves you exposed and vulnerable to hackers.

Furthermore, some networks also restrict P2P traffic since it’s usually used to download copyrighted content. Some countries have even outlawed the technology entirely. Thankfully, a VPN can mask your online activities and enable torrenting from anywhere.

Best VPNs for bypassing Sky Broadband Shield

When picking a VPN for bypassing Sky Broadband Shield, it needs to have servers in the UK for optimal connectivity. Furthermore, it should have fast tunneling protocols to provide speedy connections overall. Naturally, it needs some essential security features, such as a kill switch and DNS leak protection.

With these criteria in mind, we selected the top three VPNs that can bypass Sky Broadband Shield.

1. NordVPN – the best VPN for bypassing Sky Broadband Shield

How to Bypass Sky Broadband Shield on any device

Sky Broadband Shield looms over your internet connection like a foreboding dark cloud. That means that you need a solution for your entire home network. Thankfully, like a large umbrella, a VPN can protect your whole family from digital dangers and restrictions. Alternatively, you can also hog the benefits for yourself while others are left soaked with restrictions.

How to Bypass Sky Broadband shield on your home network

For widespread protection, you’ll need a VPN provider that can be installed on a router. However, you also need to make sure that your router supports manual configuration. If these two puzzle pieces are aligned, all you have to do is:

  1. Choose a VPN that can be installed on your router. Our top choice is NordVPN, the best VPN service overall
  2. Access your router settings according to the manufacturer specifications
  3. Reconfigure the settings with the configuration files that the VPN provides
  4. Check the connection on any of your router-connected devices

If everything is done correctly, the VPN will secure all of your home devices with a new IP address, AES-256 encryption, and provide geo-unblocking capabilities.

How to Bypass Sky Broadband Shield on your device

Alternatively, you can simply install the VPN on specific devices separately if you need the Shield restriction on the network. Such a method is excellent if you want to limit internet access for your kids but not for yourself. In that case, what you need to do is:

  1. Subscribe to a VPN that is compatible with your device. Our go-to pick is NordVPN, available for 68% off!
  2. Install the VPN on your device and connect to any server
  3. Enjoy the internet without any limitations!

What to look for in a VPN

It’s worth noting that not all VPN services are made equal. Some are exceptional and provide everything that you could possibly want. Meanwhile, others are overpriced and don’t offer essential features that you would need.

Here are some aspects that you need to pay attention to when choosing a VPN for Sky Broadband Shield:

  • Speed. With a VPN, some speed reduction is expected. But with a fast VPN provider, that reduction is minimal. Check our VPN speed test for up-to-date information on how some of the most well-known providers are performing.
  • Servers. For ideal connectivity, choose a VPN with servers in your home country or in neighboring regions. In the case of bypassing Sky Broadband Shield, you’ll benefit the most from a VPN for the UK.
  • Security. Sky Broadband Shield protects against various digital threats, such as malware and phishing attacks. Make sure that your VPN can fight against such dangers in the absence of Shield.
  • Privacy. A VPN keeps your browsing habits confidential from your ISP. Verify that the service is going a step further by having privacy-respecting jurisdiction and a strict no-logs policy.
  • Price. When it comes to VPN cost, the sky isn’t the limit. A reliable service should cost somewhere between $3 to $5 per month when choosing a long-term plan.
  • Compatibility. You won’t bypass Sky Broadband Shield if your VPN isn’t compatible with your device. Luckily, most services can be installed on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. Support for other platforms, such as Linux or routers, isn’t as common.
  • Customer support. Occasionally, you’ll need a VPN to unblock time-sensitive restrictions, such as sporting event streams. During such situations, you’ll want to have 24/7 live chat support covering your back.

Bottom line

The Sky Broadband Shield has its positives. It’s great for families with young kids, but it can lack purpose if you don’t have children. Even the malware protection that Sky Shield offers can be replaced by VPN’s antimalware tools.

A VPN will also allow you to circumvent other forms of censorship and access any content on the internet. Go ahead and try the Sky Broadband Shield bypass using a VPN and let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.

I had to turn off sky broadband shield yesterday because it was driving me insane. It does protect the kids but I can’t see anything because it blocks everything! A friend said I could use a VPN so then I started searching for one. Then I wondered: does sky broadband block vpn? I read of sky slowing down vpn but from what you said if I use ExpressVPN I will be in the clear, no? I don’t want to completely disable Sky Broadband Shield so maybe a vpn will work.

      Hey there Albert,

Yup, you should be in the clear if you’re using ExpressVPN — our top-recommended VPN. You can get more information about how to use it here in our full ExpressVPN review.

      Thanks for reading!

sky broadand doesnt work when expressvpn is loaded. it blocks the internet connection and when you turn expressvpn off you can access again – except for the expressvpn website which is blocks access to!

  4. Brianne M

I think Sky makes it simple to turn off the shield again; as soon as you visit a website that is blocked, the account holder will be invited to amend the controls or switch Sky Broadband Shield off altogether. I do not know if these have changed or the need for a VPN?

  5. 73Mark Finn

Having both PG 13 and 18 capability is definitely a good feature for Sky broadband shield. One can freely work with this option when kids are present at home and keep them safe actually.

    1. nancyfletcher

I was actually curious about this. My kids have gotten to the age where literally everything needs a childblock, and I have to check sites like this for every single piece of software I buy. The things they learn in schools these days, you wouldn’t believe! Some of those kids are learning things at home they really shouldn’t.

I like to let them play on the computer sometimes, but with the internet the way it is you never know! This makes me feel a bit safer.

This is incredible! I started reading this post with an intent to personally benefit myself but the situation is taking a different turn.
Honestly, it’s fabulous to stumble on this information. Now I can restrict and filter content in the interest of my kids
