FrootVPN markets itself as the Best VPN Service and offers affordable plans. Read our review to learn about all the different features FrootVPN has to offer – and whether it is actually “the best” .

FrootVPN is a Swedish company, founded with the aim to reliably and affordably protect the anonymity of internet users as they navigate the web. They claim to have over 300,000 subscribers, which could be a testament to the quality of their service.

Several selling points that the FrootVPN website highlights to those considering a VPN subscription include a no logs policy, location masking, multiple server locations, and unlimited bandwidth. Users will be especially pleased to know that their connection security is reinforced by a strong encryption, making it significantly harder for hackers to break through.

But as with every VPN service provider, FrootVPN is not without flaws. FrootVPN doesn’t have the best speed on the market, nor can it be used for Netflix. At $2.99 a month if you commit for a year, the price is average. But users can benefit from a 30-day money-back guarantee. In this FrootVPN review, we will discuss all the pros and cons, to help you make an informed decision.

Is FrootVPN safe to use?

The encryption level offered by FrootVPN is unclear. Their website says the data encryption level is 2048-bit, which is false and misleading. FrootVPN is referring to the Handshake, while the data encryption cipher remains unclear. Whether the misleading information on FrootVPN’s website was given due to malice or incompetence is a matter of judgement. Neither is good though.

FrootVPN offers a kill switch, a key feature one should look for when searching for a solid VPN service.

Thankfully, FrootVPN offers a kill switch, a key feature one should look for when seeking a solid VPN service. When a VPN connection drops, your browsing data is exposed, but having a kill switch essentially shuts down all Internet traffic, preventing any data leaks until you can get a secure VPN connection up and running again.

Finally, FrootVPN accepts Bitcoin as a payment method. Combined with the no-logs policy, this makes FrootVPN a middle-of-the-pack VPN.

Speed & Performance

Speed is an important aspect of any VPN. FrootVPN has 36 servers and, based on speed tests, it might be time for them to upgrade.

Tests run on a US server found downloads clocking in at 19.6 Mbps, uploads at 13.56 Mbps and ping at 186 ms. On a European server, ping was at 55 ms and downloads were around 18.34 Mbps. But upload speeds fared a bit better with 39.43Mbps. The test on an Asian server, however, was the most disappointing. Ping clocked in at 249 ms, download speed was 6.07 Mbps and upload speed was a miserly 9.14 Mbps. For the sake of reference, our base download/upload speeds are at around 60 Mbps.

With speed being a key element to all things VPN, this is one area where Froot has a big disadvantage.

How to download and install FrootVPN

Froot VPN installation

FrootVPN has a relatively easy installation process:

  1. First, you need to open an account on their website.
  2. After your account has been verified, you will be able to download the app.
  3. Once you’ve downloaded it double-click the frootvpn.exe file.
  4. Click “RUN” and, after you’ve selected your preferred language, click “OK”.
  5. In the next window, read through the Terms and Conditions and accept them, then click the “Next” button.
  6. Decide where you want to save the file and then follow the prompts. If you go to the Start Menu, you will be able to configurable the software.
  7. After you have configured it, again follow the prompts. Should it ask you to install TAP Adapters, click “Agree.” After this has been done, you can click “Finish.”
  8. Then close and rerun the client as Administrator. Integrate your information for an Administrator account on your PC.
  9. Finally, enter your chosen password and username to log in.

Once logged in, you will have access to FrootVPN’s servers over the full range of locations, protocols and server addresses.

How to use FrootVPN

After successfully installing the client on Windows, you will be asked to log in. Use the username and password that you created when you opened your account. After you’ve entered your credentials and clicked on the “Login” button, the app will automatically remember your username and password, even if you close the client and reopen it.

The client interface is easy to use and has very few settings to change. Your main task is to select a VPN protocol and to click on a server, after which you will be able to click on the “Quick Connect” button.

The main panel of the app contains a few more server options. You can pick a country from the top drop-down list or select a specific server from the lower list. However, if you use the Quick Connect option, you won’t need to do this at all.

FrootVPN for torrenting

FrootVPN supports torrenting and peer-to-peer (P2P) activity. Thanks to this support feature, users are able to torrent, which means that downloading or uploading high-quality content is entirely possible.

In fact, the controversial Pirate Bay promoted FrootVPN when they first began operating in 2014.

In a high-profile stunt, the FrootVPN logo replaced the Pirate Bay logo on their website for a fixed time period. The reason this move garnered so much attention was that The Pirate Bay claimed not to have received money for the stunt, and it was simply a “friendly plug” for a new startup.

Regardless, according to copyright and privacy news website TorrentFreak, it supposedly helped FrootVPN’s subscription numbers to swell to over 100,000 users. The service was being offered for free at the time, but of course, this no longer applies. All of FrootVPN’s subscription levels claim to support torrenting, but server speeds may work against it.

FrootVPN for Netflix

Many streaming services have regional limitations that block access from unauthorized locations. Access to streaming platforms is often the major reason why people invest in a VPN.

Unfortunately, these services have established methods to identify and block VPNs. FrootVPN has fallen prey to these geo-blocking measures and it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to access Netflix while connected to one of its VPN servers. If you are specifically looking for a VPN that will allow you to stream Netflix, you might need to give FrootVPN a skip until they find a way back in. Meanwhile, you can check our list of the Best VPNs for Netflix and choose reliable provider from there.

Apps & Extensions

Froot VPN apps and extensions

FrootVPN only has a custom app for Windows, but you will be able to use the network on your Mac, Android, or iOS devices through standalone tunneling protocol apps. You will need to do a manual set-up that will enable you to use this service on non-Windows devices. The setup procedure is laid out clearly in the installation guide on their site.

FrootVPN has a compatible client for Windows only. There is no known client for iOS or mobile devices.

All mobile devices require FrootVPN config files and an OpenVPN app, but the setup is not intricate. The Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and installation guides are easy-to-follow and also very helpful, even for non-techies.

FrootVPN offers config files if you are familiar with the OpenVPN software. You can choose to rely on these config files instead of a FrootVPN native client, since this connection type is supported by Mac, Android, Linux, and Windows.

The Windows app has a rather simple settings tab that allows you to configure the app-behaviour at startup. You can also change the interface language. FrootVPN can also be used with routers – this will expand the number of devices it will protect.

Can users in China use FrootVPN?

While FrootVPN claims to work well in China, we have our doubts. Firstly:

frootvpn map showing China in Africa map

We think this VPN service provider may have mixed China with either Nigeria or Niger, where, we have no doubt, FrootVPN functions without a hitch.

Secondly, it’s simply not true that OpenVPN is the only protocol that can “get around the country” (whatever that means). As a matter of fact, OpenVPN is known as the protocol that has had the most trouble getting around China’s Great Firewall.

Incidentally, FrootVPN has no “stealth protocol,” which is what most top VPN services offer to ensure reliable service in China. As a result, we’re inclined to say even if FrootVPN works there at the moment, there’s no way of knowing it will continue to do so even in the nearest future.

We would also like to point out yet again that the “military-grade 2048-bit data encryption,” line FrootVPN keeps on parroting is false. Which begs the question – why trust a VPN that can’t even get the basic facts right with your livelihood?

Froot VPN support

The support section can be accessed from the company website. There are two ways to reach FrootVPN support directly – the live chat and the ticketing system. In addition, there are also self-help resources in the form of guides and an FAQ.

The live chat service is only active during working hours. At the bottom right of the site, you will find the live chat box that indicates the opening hours. The live chat is available to registered members only, so if you are not registered, you will only get email support. Overall, wait times are long and sometimes the agents are so ‘busy’ that no one answers.

FrootVPN also has active accounts on Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus. These social network platforms will send you updates if new features are being released or if a new server has been added. If you are comfortable using these social platforms, you can send them messages directly.

FrootVPN pricing

FrootVPN is one of the most affordable VPN services in the industry. There are three pricing tiers, based on your subscription length. A one-month subscription costs $4.99, while three months cost $3.99 per month ($11.97 billed every 3 months). A full year’s subscription is the cheapest and will cost you $2.99 a month ($35.88 in total).

All plans come with the native desktop client, support for a variety of protocols (PPTP, OpenVPN, SSTP, and L2TP), and limitless bandwidth and speed. As a subscriber, you have up to 5 connections for your devices, but you can also use the service at the router level for limitless connections.

You can pay using credit cards, PayPal, and Perfect Money. If you prefer anonymity, Bitcoin is accepted as well.

Unfortunately, FrootVPN does not have a free or trial version. The good news is there is a 30-day money-back guarantee in case they do not meet the standards portrayed on their website. Before clicking the order button, don’t forget to uncheck the auto-renewal option (if you prefer to manually renew your subscription).

Bottom line of our FrootVPN review

FrootVPN might be the right service for you if you are looking for a budget plan with a money-back guarantee. The security seems at least somewhat decent, including several protocols and a kill-switch. While it’s not the best tool for use in China or accessing Netflix, P2P fans may be in luck.

FrootVPN might be worth trying out for casual VPN users, but overall, this VPN service still has a lot to work out before joining the ranks of good VPN service providers.
