Gom VPN would be better off if it did not market itself as a VPN, but rather as a proxy/unblocker. Even then it’s not great and borderline-scammy.
Gom VPN only comes as a Chrome extension. It does not offer you a lot of security but will unblock some geo-restricted or censored sites. However, it’s quite expensive for what it does and also doubles as a multi-level marketing (pyramid) scheme.
The Gom website is extremely vague and lacks meaningful information, but it seems clear that the service is extremely low on features and is in fact not a VPN at all.
In short, you shouldn’t trust your security to Gom alone.
Since Gom VPN tries to keep everything simple, it does not have any location-switching feature. It also seems that Gom VPN only has US servers.
During our tests, we found out that Gom VPN is not nearly good enough when it comes to speed. When trying out the trial version, we saw as much as a 50% decrease in download speed and as much as an 80% reduction in Upload speed.
Our standard speed, as shown above, was the benchmark against which we tested the connection, but watch what happens when we connect to Gom VPN.
These are simply not good enough speeds for a “VPN” that does not offer anything in the way of security either.
This is the fun part. In order to download Gom VPN, all you need to do is:
Once you have done it, you will be able to use the VPN without any registration once. However, you will need to register either with your Google account or with your e-mail once you connect to it for the second time to begin your 7-day free trial.
As we have stated above, Gom VPN is only available as a Chrome extension. While many VPNs try to cut their costs by only being available on a couple of platforms or as extensions, the fact that it’s only available on Chrome makes it a proxy service than a VPN.
The fact that Gom is only available on Chrome smacks of low-quality and a low-budget. It would be alright if the VPN managed to redeem itself on its performance and security, but it fails to do so as stated so many times above.
It is stated on the Gom VPN website that Gom can be used to unblock Netflix. However, that is not the case as we tried repeatedly and were unable to stream anything.
Due to the fact that Gom VPN has servers in the US, it is unable to run BBC iPlayer either. We did try it with Hulu, but it failed to work there as well. If you want a good VPN for streaming, we suggest looking elsewhere.
You could use Gom VPN for torrenting using a webtorrent client. With that said, this would expose you to WebRTC leaks since webtorrents work through WebRTC. In other words, torrenting with Gom VPN is likely not secure.
While we can’t claim to know the answer to this question, using a VPN in China is a high-stakes activity. We would certainly refrain from doing it using Gom VPN.
If you want a VPN that will reliably work for you in China and guarantee you complete safety from the authorities, take a look at NordVPN.
First things first, Gom VPN does not have live chat support, which is no surprise considering the size of the VPN. Overall, we found the support to be accommodating and we did not run into that many problems with them.
The support team had decent knowledge about their product although they were unable to answer certain questions such as which protocol Gom VPN uses.
One area where Gom really disappointed us was the knowledge base on their website. When we tried to go to it, we found that it was down. In fact, we had to e-mail support in order to get any of our queries answered. We are not sure if their knowledge base is always down, but it definitely does not look good.
Gom VPN seems cheap in isolation. You can get it for $3.99 a month if you pay annually or $4.99 a month if you pay for a single month. Unfortunately, you can easily find a cheaper and more powerful VPN. As a matter of fact, you can get some of the best services for just about as much.
Gom has a “Gold” version which lets you have a Private IP and offers to refer other users to the product. For each user you refer, you get $2 and an additional $2 for each user they refer. In order to enter this scheme, you have to pay a subscription fee of $19.99/month. Obviously, this smacks of a multi-Level marketing scheme and does not raise our confidence in Gom VPN.
The only thing Gom can do properly is unblock websites on the internet for a cheap price. Unfortunately, there are many other services that can do the same for free or for an extremely low price.
Don’t buy it, period.
