Goose VPN lets you get it up and running in less than a minute. But before letting it loose on your network, read through our Goose VPN review.

Goose VPN is based in the Netherlands and gives you access to a reasonably large VPN server network of over 63 locations across 28 countries. Most are located in the US and Europe, but there are servers in Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Israel, and Australia as well. Goose has custom clients for Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. You can also configure it to run on routers to protect an unlimited number of your devices.

The Goose VPN client offers a varied selection of proxy locations, as well as specialized P2P and streaming servers for legal-consequence-free torrenting & streaming geo-blocked content, respectively.

With different plans available, you can pay as little as $2.75 a month for the 3-year plan. If any questions come up, you’ll be happy to know that they offer a 24/7 live chat service.

Our Goose VPN review will take a look at the VPN’s speed and performance, whether it’s safe and easy to use, whether you can use it to gain access to Netflix and torrenting, and all the other important aspects to help you decide whether you should get it.

Is Goose VPN safe to use?

Goose VPN protocol

Goose VPN has secure and speedy servers, which deliver robust encryption to protect your anonymity.

GooseVPN utilizes the virtually unbreakable AES-256-bit encryption technology which offers reliable encryption and protection. Their OpenVPN security protocol is based on OpenSSL. This protocol makes good use of related encryption methods and is supported by regular security updates. Their service also has the obligatory customizable kill switch that will terminate your internet connection in case of VPN connection failure.

A number of Goose VPN servers support the peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol, which gives you the ability to use torrent websites and download with ease. The only caveat is that you’re not allowed to torrent files unless you connect to one of these servers.

Speed & Performance

When using any VPN service, the distance of the server you connect to and the hardware you use can impact the speed of your connection. That said, when we performed the speed test for our Goose VPN review, the servers within the UK were fairly snappy, while connections to most European countries saw a decline in speed, though it was still quite reasonable.

However, in a few locations such as the Netherlands, the connection was particularly slow. Be sure to test different servers to find the swiftest goose of the flock.

Overall though, Goose VPN gave us a fair performance in terms of speed: not a comatose snail, but not the Usain Bolt of VPNs either.

How to download and install Goose VPN

To use Goose VPN, you’ll first have to register on their website. Unsurprisingly for a service based in the Netherlands, goosevpn.com has an orange color theme. It’s also quite well designed and easy to navigate.

On to the download and installation process:

  1. Go to goosevpn.com and fill in their registration form.
  2. After completing the registration, you’ll be given a link to download their app.
  3. Open the setup file, choose your language and select “Download software.”
  4. Go through the license agreement and accept it.
  5. Select the necessary options and click “Install.”
  6. After you complete the installation, select “Finish.”

You can also install Goose VPN on your Android TV. To do this, download the app through the Google Play Store on your television. If your TV doesn’t have access to the Google Play Store, you can install their APK manually:

  1. Download the APK file through your Android phone, then put it on a USB flash drive or an SD card and insert it into your TV.
  2. After installing the application, click “Connect” and begin your Goose VPN experience.

Note: At the lower section of the site, you’ll find a number of stellar reviews by other users. You should probably take these with a generous pinch of salt. None of them give Goose less than four stars, and might as well be written by actual geese, unlike this Goose VPN review, which was written by a human-passing duck.

How to use it

After you’re through with the installation, the Goose VPN client will greet you with a login page, where you’ll find options to sign in with Google or Facebook. To be on the safer side, go for the traditional method of entering a regular username and password.

The Goose VPN client features one of the more user-friendly interfaces: on the main window, you’ll see your default server, a map showing its location, a Connect button alongside your current IP address, and a meter giving live updates of how much bandwidth you have left. There are also links to upgrade your account and check for updates.

Server selection appears much like with other VPN clients. Tapping the default location opens a list, highlighting which servers are suited for specific applications (P2P and video streaming), and displaying a simple indicator of server load. The Connect button directs you to choose a server manually.

There is a location-based connection attribute hidden away in Settings, but that only applies if you set up the client to connect automatically on launch. You can set a single server as your “Favourite” which will automatically connect when you start the client.

Goose VPN for torrenting

You can use Goose VPN for torrenting, but this is only available on certain servers.

To find out which servers you can use with your BitTorrent client, click on the “Country” tab in your Goose VPN app and a drop-down list will pop up. Look for the servers marked as “P2P Server.” They’ll have a little “P2P” icon next to the signal strength indicator.

Note that the country you choose will have an impact on the speed of your downloads, so be sure to select one that’s closer to your location.

Goose VPN for Netflix

At the time of our Goose VPN review, the client performed well with Netflix streaming. However, note that since Netflix is tirelessly working to block known VPN servers, the situation is always liable to change.

To stream US-exclusive content on Netflix, select the USA Streaming server option with the smart server list enabled. Fans of British TV shows can use the UK streaming server, which has proven to work seamlessly with Netflix UK.

Regarding other streaming services, we were able to access Amazon Prime using the UK servers; US-based servers were blocked by Amazon, however. Via the UK server, you can also gain access to the BBC iPlayer.

Apps & Extensions

goosevpn apps

At first glance, Goose VPN offers the usual selection of operating systems for their client: you can run it on Windows and Mac OS computers, as well as on iOS or Android mobile devices. However, as we dug into their FAQ section for our Goose VPN review, we found a guide that shows how to manually configure the client for a variety of other platforms, including Synology OS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 3, and ChromeOS, which is a surprisingly nice touch.

Another pleasant surprise is the fact that Goose VPN mobile apps for iOS and Android are incredibly similar to the Windows client, both in visual and structural experience. The developers have painstakingly reconciled design and UX across all platforms to the extent that if you’re used to the Goose VPN client on a particular device and decide to change, you will adapt quickly and easily, with user experience being almost the same.

Setting up the VPN, as well as choosing a server and accessing other settings, is practically identical on every platform. And by configuring the service on a router, you can protect all your devices without paying for extra licenses.

Also, Goose VPN recently released a Chrome extension for simplified access to geo-blocked websites.

Can you use Goose VPN in China?

Nowhere on the official website does Goose VPN expressly state that you can use their service in China. When looking through their FAQ section for our GooseVPN review, we found that China was only mentioned in comparison to Russia. According to the company, Goose VPN is focusing on giving users access in Egypt and UAE, where governments are also hard at work striving to stamp out VPN usage.

If you’re living in China, you should probably skip Goose VPN. Fear not, however, since there are many other VPNs that work in China, such as the top scoring NordVPN.

Support

GooseVPN support

When it comes to choosing the right VPN, one of the more important things to look at is the efficiency of customer support. As you may have noticed, we made a number of references to the FAQ section in our Goose VPN review so far. This is because it’s really well-organized to answer general questions, as well as those related to payment, privacy, and setup. However, if you have a more specific issue, there is a 24/7 live chat option available. Unfortunately for avid and vocal callers, Goose has no phone line support team.

For more specific questions, you might want to use the contact form, which will connect you to a Goose VPN representative via email. You’re pretty likely to get a reasonable and knowledgeable response within a short period of submitting a request, which is always a plus for email support. You can also connect through social media via Facebook and Twitter, but they are only moderately active on those platforms.

Though there have been cases of users complaining about misinformation, Goose VPN’s customer support team is generally quite efficient.

Pricing

Goose VPN offers both monthly and yearly package options. The 3-year plan is their recommended plan for $99.00 ($2.75 a month) and has no data limit. With monthly plans, you have two options: 50 GB of data and unlimited data. The 2-year plan is cheaper and costs $2.99 per month. The 1 year plan costs $4.99/month while the 1-month plan is $12.99 monthly. In case you’re skeptical about the service, they offer a 30-day free trial with full access to all features.

Goose requires you to enter your payment information before you can use the free trial. If you come to a negative conclusion after using the service, you can decide to cancel without charge. They offer the following payment options: Visa, MasterCard, iDeal, American Express, GiroPay and PayPal MINT (prepaid card system). Your best choice for anonymity is MINT. Accounts are for single person use only, but you can get a discount if you refer a friend.

Bottom line of our Goose VPN review

So, to Goose or not to Goose?

The verdict of this Goose VPN review is clear: all things considered, it’s definitely worth a test drive using their free 30-day trial, at least for its simplicity and ease of use.

Goose VPN has most of the basics covered: the encryption is top-notch, the interface is excellent, they have dedicated P2P servers, and they do not log your online activity. Also, their support staff is pretty great, especially their email and ticket-based support systems.

Goose’s lack of access in China (allegedly), uneven performance, and streaming service issues are the main downsides we encountered during our Goose VPN review.

How difficult is it to connect to a P2P server? Does your internet speed decrease if you try torrenting through them? That would make a big difference for me in considering this VPN provider.

  2. Victor Danielsen

Goose VPN looks good for just about every type of user (unless you happen to live in China). The price is pretty good and the security protocols sound solid. Speed might have been an issue for the reviewer but it looks like the users who commented here are happy with it. I’ll have to think about getting it when my current VPN subscription is over.

I have the pro version working on two Raspberry pi’s , a windows 10 pc and two android tablets, all work flawlessly. The support team are friendly and switched on too.
    Great job goose

I don’t have any problems. Goose helps me to be untraceable and protect me from cybercrime And I can watch my favorite shows on Netflix, so goose works great for me.

I work offshore and travel all around the world. Goose has been fantastic for me to keep my info private on free wifi servers in airports, hotels, cafes and even vessels.

At $2.99 a month, the 50 GB plan for Goose VPN is a good price and I like that they offer a free 30-day trial for their service. I’ve checked out their FAQ page and I have to agree with you that it is very well-organized and thorough. I’m interested in installing Goose on my router and they have manuals with step-by-step instructions with the information on how this process works. Very impressive!
