Liberty Shield VPN(previously known as UK Proxy Server) is a service that offers support across multiple platforms and routers, hiding nothing and offering a 48-hour free trial to test the service for yourself before you pay to subscribe.
One of the cheapest VPNs on the market, Liberty Shield VPN lets you unblock sites from censored resources to Netflix, all while being backed by the protocol of your choice.
You can switch between IPs speedily, get unlimited data, and install the app on virtually any device you want, including getting a pre-configured VPN router that’ll whisk all your worries away.
However, server count is low, and so you might run into latency issues if you can’t connect to somewhere close to you. This might be difficult, with Liberty Shield VPN offering only nine countries as options.
That being said, their focus does seem to be on quality over quantity – instead of focusing on investing in more locations, they’ve invested in a bigger network in the countries that they offer.
Security and privacy
This VPN provider is located in a 5 Eyes country. Specifically, it’s in Scotland in the UK, which has a very privacy-unfriendly law called the Snooper’s Charter. That makes it a less-than-ideal place to store your sensitive data.
The VPN network is configured to allow both PTTP (by default) and L2TP (also known as IPSec) connections. Liberty Shield VPN also supports OpenVPN (both UDP/TCP), which you’d have to set up on your own. However, they provide support for the protocol and the available installation guides are easy to follow.
While many consider OpenVPN to be the most secure and the other to have widely-reported security backdoors, the L2TP/IPSec and PPTP options make Liberty Shield VPN a viable choice if you’re in a country that recognizes and blocks OpenVPN connections coming in.
The encryption is 256-bit, which is an industry standard – you may have heard of it being referred to as “military-grade”. To that end, we found absolutely nothing in the way of WebRTC or IPv6 leaks – however, on some servers, DNS rerouting (i.e. DNS leaks) were observed.
The lack of any special features – multi-hop, Tor over VPN, or a kill switch – are a bit disappointing, as the inclusion of these would substantially improve the quality of the app and take it up a few notches.
Speed and performance
Most VPNs suffer a massive drop in download/upload speed when connected, making it harder to use those VPNs for, streaming and torrenting.
Liberty Shield VPN, however, offers a simple proxy in addition to the VPN – the data isn’t sent through a secured tunnel, but the proxy will change your IP address to the location of your choice, and you can browse the Internet unencumbered, with no loss in speed.
Most VPNs take a fast connection and make it almost unusable, let alone a slow one. Our original speed wasn’t very fast to begin with, and the results were heartening.
Some VPN companies either throttle the free data as a way to prevent strain on their servers or encourage people to upgrade to the paid option. Our average showed that, at the very least, Liberty Shield VPN retains 50% of the original speed, even on the free trial connection.
As speeds are ultimately a subjective topic, let us know in the comments section if your experience was similarly speedy!
How to download and install Liberty Shield VPN
While the website is easy-to-use, the setup process for Liberty Shield VPN might be a bit confusing for some.
You cannot download the software without signing up, even for the free trial. Just clicking on “Get VPN,” even after signing up, will keep taking you back to the purchase/sign-up page, even after you log in. This is a very frustrating process.
To download the application, you have to log in to access your Dashboard, from where you go to a tab called Access Details that finally lets you download the application.
Once downloaded, the installation is quick, but you have to log in to the application to access your account as well.
Liberty Shield VPN allows you to install their VPN over PS3, Xbox, Wii, Windows computers and phones, Android, Mac and iOS, and even sell pre-configured routers that turn your entire internet connection into one secured by the VPN.
This means you can use any device, such as a Kodi box or Amazon Fire TV, and use the Liberty Shield VPN router to help you unblock anything you’d want.
The interface is largely the same across all platforms, except some of the protocols being different – iPhones, famously, do not allow an app to have a native OpenVPN connection, and require you to install a separate app, the official OpenVPN client, and run your VPN through it.
Liberty Shield VPN for Netflix
As mentioned previously, Liberty Shield VPN is a rebrand of UK Proxy Server. This means that the one thing Liberty Shield VPN can always be relied on for is unblocking geo-restricted content and websites.
We were able to jump around from the UK Netflix to Netflix US and back again, with a 15-second delay in connection without compromising on the HD quality.
The high speeds and encrypted connections make Liberty Shield VPN a good choice to get around Netflix’s proxy ban.
The same can be said, as talked about in the previous section, for Kodi and other streaming services (Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and even YouTube).
Liberty Shield VPN for torrenting
The only difference between a VPN for streaming and downloading torrents is whether or not P2P connections are allowed on their servers, and if they throttle BitTorrent data.
As Liberty Shield VPN opens up the entire internet, it opens up a world of exploration for torrents along with it. In many places, you’ll find specific trackers and torrent sites banned.
With Liberty Shield VPN, you can get around both these blocks easily, on almost all servers. Since Liberty Shield has focused on making their few servers better instead of increasing reach in multiple countries, the servers offer the same functionality.
Is Liberty Shield VPN good for users in China?
China is notorious for its Great Firewall, wherein the internet is subject to mass censorship, and even unauthorized VPNs are banned (thus rendering the very purpose of a VPN ineffective).
Since Liberty Shield was essentially founded to make it easier for British tourists venturing out of the country to be able to access the same resources they had back home, it’s ideal for getting around censor-happy governments. The encryption model is robust, there’s a solid choice of servers, and the speeds are reliable with an almost 100% uptime of connectivity.
That being said, if your goals are to engage in political dissent, you might be better off with a VPN specifically dedicated to guarding freedom of speech than simply unblocking websites.
While there’s a live telephone hotline, especially if you run into router issues, our experience unfortunately got us in touch with some personnel who didn’t seem highly experienced when it came to VPNs.
On the other hand, however, there’s a ticketing system, live chat options, setup guides for virtually all platforms imaginable, an extensive FAQ and Blog section, as well as a physical address, which inspires confidence.
For what it offers, many might say Liberty Shield VPN is a bit costly.
The least you can pay is $7.58/month, via the annual option. If paid monthly, the charge is $9.09. That’s not that valuable of a deal and, given the fact that you can only pay via two types of credit cards, all the benefits go out the window when you weigh the pros and cons versus the pricing and the possible limitations presented by the payment options.
Ultimately, Liberty Shield VPN is safe and secure software that does what you want it to, but might not be the best for you if you’re not a UK resident, or are being charged in dollars (or any currency other than pounds).
The price tag is heavier than the benefits on display, and there are some concerns over inconsistent security. It might not be for everyone, but if you want something without the bells and whistles and to ensure unrestricted access to your favorite streaming sites, Liberty Shield VPN could be the one for you.
