OkayFreedom VPN promises to help keep your activities private and secure from snooping eyes. But can it deliver on its promises? This German service offers far fewer servers than what you’d get with a service such as ExpressVPN or NordVPN. The low number of servers also means that speed and performance have much room for improvement.

In terms of pricing, you’ll find that you can actually download OkayFreedom VPN for free, but of course with strict limitations. This service works on most platforms, although this is an area that can definitely be improved.

Continue reading and you’ll discover everything that you need to know about OkayFreedom VPN and whether it is suitable for your particular needs.

Is OkayFreedom VPN safe to use?

OkayFreedom makes use of OpenVPN protocols with 256-bit encryption. That’s about the only information we can get about this VPN service, which is always a bad thing.

If VPNs are really secure, they have no problem splashing that all over their Features page or home page. If they don’t advertise it anywhere on their website, they are probably not very secure.

Upon conducting leak tests for our OkayFreedom VPN review, the service did not reveal our exact location. So, it’s safe to say that this VPN provider works excellently for masking your IP address and enhancing your online privacy.

Does OkayFreedom VPN keep logs?

Fortunately, OkayFreedom VPN seems to be serious about user privacy. According to their privacy policy, a user’s personal data isn’t necessary to use the service.

They also make the following statement:

The OkayFreedom service saves neither addresses nor content accessed by the user, the IP address that OkayFreedom assigned to them; nor the user’s own IP address through which they are using OkayFreedom. As a result, it is not possible for Steganos to ascertain the content an OkayFreedom user has accessed. Neither the IP address of the user nor that of the accessed servers are saved.

Speed and performance

We tested the OkayFreedom VPN server speeds as is standard for VPNpro, by connecting to different locations around the world and checking them with Speedtest.net.

Here is the base (non-VPN) speed we’re starting with:

base speed - no zenvpn

  • Download speed: 243 Mbps
  • Upload speed: 247 Mbps

Germany

OkayFreedomVPN server speed - Germany

  • Download: 30 Mbps
  • Upload 72 Mbps
  • Dropoff: 88%

USA

OkayFreedomVPN server speed - USA

  • Download: 17 Mbps
  • Upload 56 Mbps
  • Dropoff: 93%

Japan

OkayFreedomVPN server speed - Japan

  • Download: 14 Mbps
  • Upload 5 Mbps
  • Dropoff: 94%

There is most definitely room for improvement when it comes to the speed of the service. Many of the servers which we connected to dragged down our connection speed considerably. Therefore, this is a huge downside for a service which works rather well when it comes to security and online safety.

Server coverage

OkayFreedom VPN offers a relatively low number of servers for a low monthly cost – with 19 locations including Italy, Japan, the USA, Russia, and more.

So, if you’re in search of an affordable VPN service, OkayFreedom VPN might just suit your needs.

Ease of use and multiplatform support

OkayFreedom VPN is only available to install on Windows, which means you won’t be able to use it on other operating systems such as Android and macOS. Therefore, if you’re looking for a VPN which will allow you to anonymously stream movies and TV shows on devices such as an Amazon Firestick, you won’t be able to do so.

In terms of the GUI of the Windows application, you’ll find that it is rather simple to navigate. This makes it easy to select a server and keep yourself protected while browsing the web. However, the issue is that the settings menu offers minimal options. So, this might not be to the liking of more advanced users.

OkayFreedom VPN for Netflix

On the OkayFreedom website, it does state that it can unblock videos. However, it doesn’t specifically mention that you can use it for Netflix. Upon testing it for that very purpose, we found that it wasn’t at all effective. We connected to the US server on OkayFreedom, with Netflix able to identify that we were using a VPN.

In spite of this, we found that we were able to use OkayFreedom to access on-demand services provided by the likes of the UK’s Channel 4 and ITV.

So, if you’d like to access any of those services outside of the UK, you should be able to do this easily with OkayFreedom.

OkayFreedom VPN for torrenting

When it comes to using OkayFreedom VPN for torrenting, it is highly recommended that you do so with caution. The OkayFreedom website states that you can utilize the VPN for P2P downloading purposes. However, it also mentions that downloading any copyrighted material without any prior permission is prohibited.

For that reason, it’s safe to say that OkayFreedom VPN shouldn’t be used for torrenting. Instead, you should opt for a VPN which has been proven to work effectively for this purpose.

Customer support

OkayFreedom VPN only has a dedicated FAQs/Support section on the website and email support. While this page is easy to find and navigate, when it comes to customer support, OkayFreedom VPN has plenty of room for improvement.

There’s a decent number of FAQs listed which might just provide the answers you are looking for. But, that’s about where the positives end in terms of support. Having contacted customer support via email, many people found that it took several days to get a response – with some not getting any response whatsoever. So, if you happen to have any urgent queries, you might just find yourself waiting for a while to get your issue(s) resolved.

Pricing

When it comes to pricing, it’s worth mentioning that you don’t have the option of purchasing a monthly plan – only a year’s subscription up front.

With that being said, the monthly cost works out at just $2.50 a month when you take into account the yearly cost of $29.95, with no option for simultaneous devices usage. While it’s affordable, it’s also quite limited.

You can pay for your subscription via PayPal, credit card, or wire transfer.

OkayFreedom VPN offers a free version as well – but there is a data limit of just 500MB each month. This is a measly amount which entices you to upgrade to the premium version in order to take full advantage of unlimited traffic. The free version is also ad-supported, which might be off-putting for many users despite it being free. Many other free VPN services such as Windscribe offer a far more generous monthly allowance while not displaying any advertisements.

If for any reason you are unhappy with OkayFreedom VPN, there is a 30-day money-back guarantee. This is encouraging considering you have to pay for a whole year up front. So, at least you won’t be stuck with a service that you’re unhappy with for the remainder of your subscription.

Bottom line

Overall, it can be said that OkayFreedom’s ease of use and low cost makes it a great option for those who are in search of a basic VPN that does what it says on the tin. The fact that they have a free version is great too, as this can give you a taste of exactly what you can expect when you install this particular VPN.

In terms of support, OkayFreedom clearly has room for improvement. This all starts from the fact their on-site FAQ/support section is very limited. Improving the turnaround from customer service would undoubtedly help with this.

Overall, it can be said that you can get better value for money elsewhere when you take into account the drawbacks which come along with an OkayFreedom VPN subscription. But, for those who are looking for a run-of-the-mill VPN for light web browsing, you can’t go far wrong with this VPN.
