Established by Polish security firm Defendemus back in 2012, VPN Shield is a service that appears to offer great value for money upon first glance. It has a whole set of features that’s easy to use even for those with limited technical knowledge.

In the following review, we’ll cover all the essential information you need to know about VPN Shield and whether it has the features necessary to take your online privacy to a whole new level.

Is VPN Shield safe to use?

When browsing the VPN Shield website, we found that it didn’t exactly offer much information regarding which encryption methods or security protocols are used. For that reason, those who are concerned about privacy should probably look elsewhere.

VPN Shield collects a considerable amount of data, such as the amount of time you spend on the VPN in addition to your choice of server location, with there being no clarification on how long this data is kept for. In spite of this, you’ll be happy to know that as the company is based in Poland, it’s less likely that the NSA or GCHQ will intercept your data.

Unfortunately, VPN Shield is not compatible with OpenVPN. This is hugely disappointing considering many other alternative VPNs allow you to make use of this particular security protocol which is known to offer the strongest level of protection.

Instead, VPN Shield uses PPTP, L2TP, and IKEv2. Each of these protocols offers a decent level of protection, just not as strong as OpenVPN. So, this is certainly worth bearing in mind if you are considering purchasing a VPN Shield subscription.

Speed and performance

There’s a lot room for improvement when it comes to the speed and performance of VPN Shield. This is likely because of the small choice of servers – all of which will have many people connected to them at any one time.

Slowdowns are pretty much inevitable with most of, if not all VPNs. But, some slow down your connection far more than other alternatives. Unfortunately, VPN Shield is one which suffers from inconsistent speeds which negatively impacts your ability to browse the web and perform online tasks such as streaming and online gaming effectively. Therefore, this is likely to be hugely off-putting for many users.

How to install VPN Shield

Installing VPN Shield really couldn’t be easier – simply head on over to the official website, input your details and download the relevant client for your device.

For any mobile devices you have that are running either iOS or Android, simply head on over to the app store of your mobile operating system and you’ll soon be up and running.

Apps and extensions

You’ll find that VPN Shield has its own native clients for all the major platforms, including:

  • Windows
  • Mac
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Amazon Kindle

So, it’s safe to say that almost all operating systems are covered by this particular VPN service. This is great to see as not all VPNs offer support for such a wide range of platforms.

Each client allows you to easily access the full features of VPN Shield. However, the basic user interface of the client means that settings and options are somewhat limited when compared to other VPN services. In spite of this, you’ll find that even complete beginners will be able to easily get to grips with the application in no time.

VPN Shield for Netflix

VPN Shield has been shown to be an effective choice for getting around geo-blocking practices which are imposed on various websites. However, given the small server choice of this particular service, it wouldn’t be surprising for it to fail to unblock Netflix. Therefore, it’s probably worth taking the time to make use of the free trial to discover whether or not you can use it for this particular purpose.

VPN Shield for torrenting

While torrenting in itself is perfectly legal, it’s the content which some people decide to download that is the issue. This is why you need to invest in a solid VPN so that you can safely and anonymously download torrents while avoiding a run-in with the law.

However, you’ll find that with each VPN Shield server, you are not allowed to use it for P2P/torrenting. Therefore, you will need to search for an alternative VPN that has been proven to work effectively for torrenting purposes.

Is VPN Shield good for users in China?

For spoofing your location, protecting your personal data on open wifi networks, and getting around censorship, you’ll find that VPN Shield works effectively. But, when it comes to countries such as China who take internet censorship very seriously, it’s probably worth proceeding with caution when using this particular service.

Little is known about this particular company and the lack of information on encryption methods and security protocols suggests that your personal information could be at risk. In a country such as China which is very strict about how its citizens and visitors to the country use the web, it’s far better to avoid this VPN within the nation just to be on the safe side.

Via the official VPN Shield website, there is a useful guides and tutorials section in which you can search the database for common issues on various platforms. There is also an FAQ section which you can consult prior to getting in touch with the customer service team.

With that being said, the entire knowledge base section isn’t as in-depth as we would have liked. When you take a look at many other VPN services, you get support features such as live chat, which is arguably the most popular method of gaining assistance in the modern day. However, VPN Shield is yet to offer such a feature. Instead, you will need to rely on email support which we found to be inconsistent in terms of response time.

To get started with VPN Shield, there is a 1-day free trial which allows you to test whether it is suitable for your particular needs. One day isn’t really that long to get to grips with what a VPN is capable of. But, you can enjoy an additional three days if you like the company’s Facebook page.

In terms of price plans, you’ll find the following:

  • one week: $2.99
  • one month: $5.99
  • 3 months: $5.00/month
  • one year: $3.33/month
  • 3 years: $2.78/month

With each license, you are able to benefit from up to five simultaneous connections. This is great for anyone who has multiple devices that they would like to protect at once such as in a small office or for a family household.

Bottom line of our VPN Shield review

Offering plenty of features for an affordable monthly cost, multiple device connections with one subscription, along with the option to take advantage of a free trial, there are many reasons to like VPN Shield. The fact that there are native applications for most major platforms further enhances the appeal of this particular VPN.

However, the poor performance of VPN Shield means that even though the monthly cost is higher than reasonable.  You simply don’t get enough value for the price that you pay. Along with the lack of OpenVPN support and the minimal information that is available on security protocols, you might just be putting your personal information at risk.

Therefore, it is hard to recommend VPN Shield, as all of the aforementioned downsides confirm that there are plenty of better options out there on the market.

Way too slow for me! I have had terrible speeds with this service, and that on top of all the other problems it has? I’m cancelling it as soon as possible. I’m going to try out one of the big box options next. Between the two, do you suggest Nord VPN or Express VPN? I know they’re both good, but I want to pick the best one.

I had this one for a bit and it worked okay, but the slow speeds killed it. I don’t really torrent much since that doesn’t really appeal to me, I don’t need it to be super good with torrents, but I DO need good speeds, and it just isn’t there with this one. So finding out it doesn’t support OpenVPN too and learning about that was a big eye opener, and I’ve been looking for a new one ever since .

What kind of modern VPN doesn’t support OpenVPN?? That’s a huge lack. The slow speed is also a big put off, since we no longer live in the early 00′ haha.

Given the fact that VPN Shield is blazing fast and provides on-demand connection encryption service with straightforward pricing and a brilliant user experience, I think it deserves a rating of a little above than average. When it comes to pricing, it is excellent and also provides good features, ease of use and reliability and support.
