The Golden Globes celebrates achievements in drama and comedy in American TV and the film industry. The 76th Golden Globe Awards will air on NBC on January 6, 2019. The nominees include Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born, Crazy Rich Asians, and The Favourite. On the TV end of things, nominees include Killing Eve, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Bodyguard, and Homecoming. Sandra Oh and Andy Sandberg are set to host.

While it is easy to watch the Golden Globes if you are in the United States, as any major cable provider, satellite provider, or US streaming service will have NBC, if you live outside of the US or are traveling, you’ll have to jump through some hoops. Here’s how to watch the Golden Globes online from anywhere in the world.

Like most networks, NBC restricts a lot of the content on their website so that only people inside the United States can access it. Likewise, streaming platforms like Hulu and Netflix also restrict content according to geographical location. This is called geo-blocking. In most cases, these entities have to perform geo-blocking because of copyright laws and other legal concerns. If you are outside of the US and want to watch the Golden Globes, geo-blocking will be an issue because you won’t be able to live stream from or the NBC app. Luckily, if you have a VPN, you will be able to circumvent these geographic restrictions. Here’s how to watch the Golden Globes online using a VPN.

How to Watch the Golden Globes Online Using a VPN

The reason geo-blocking works is that websites can track a user’s location through their IP address, which is typically provided to them by their Internet Service Provider, or ISP. A VPN is a service that allows you to conceal that address. A VPN reroutes your browsing activity to a different server, and that server can be anywhere in the world. So if you live in Paris, you can make it look like you are in Chicago. Without the VPN, you’ll end up with an error message.

Once you choose a VPN provider and install it, choose a server that is located within the US. If you have an American cable provider, you can go to NBC’s website and live stream from the website. The VPN will make it look like you’re in America, allowing you to verify your location when they ask. If you don’t have American cable, you can still access NBC through a streaming platform. Hulu and Sling TV both have NBC.

In both cases, you need to be using your VPN when you go to buy your subscription, as these streaming services are US-only. You will also need an American credit card. If you don’t have one, you can buy gift cards for Hulu and Sling online. Sling costs $25 a month, while Hulu Live costs $39.99 a month. There are cheaper Hulu packages that will allow you to watch the Golden Globes the next day, but to watch them live you need the Live version. You might also be able to get a free-trial from Hulu or Sling if you are a first-time customer.

1. NordVPN

There are a lot of different VPNs to choose from. You want one that has servers located in the United States, otherwise, it won’t work. NordVPN has 5000 servers in 59 countries. Many of these servers are in the US. You’ll have no problem accessing NBC no matter where you are.

NordVPN prioritizes security and privacy. It doesn’t log their users’ activity, which is what you want if you’d like to stream anonymously. This also makes NordVPN ideal for bypassing Netflix geo-restrictions. NordVPN is also easy to use. You can use NordVPN with up to 6 devices at a time and there are corresponding apps for iOS, Android, Windows, MacOS, and Linux. For a VPN, NordVPN is also pretty fast and there is a good selection of add-ons. While there are cheaper options, NordVPN has some of the best security and privacy features, as well as a reliable customer service.

2. CyberGhost

CyberGhost is another good option if you want to watch the Golden Globes from outside the US. The service is a little cheaper than NordVPN, but not quite as fast. And although they have all the basic security and privacy features you need, they don’t have quite as good of a reputation as NordVPN does.

CyberGhost’s network has 6400 servers that span 90 countries. Many of the servers are in the United States. The VPN will work with Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS. CyberGhost has a no-logging policy and a leak-free system. It is also an easy service to install.

3. ExpressVPN

Another excellent option is ExpressVPN. This provider has 3000 servers in 90 countries. It is also one of the faster VPNs on the market. With a no-logging policy, strong encryption, and zero DNS leaks, the security and privacy reputation of ExpressVPN is the only one that matches that of NordVPN.

ExpressVPN has custom applications for Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Linux, and more. Another thing we like about ExpressVPN is that it has some of the best customer support options. Other VPNs take a long time to respond to customers, but ExpressVPN is very quick. The biggest downside of ExpressVPN is that it is more expensive than CyberGhost. But we found that ExpressVPN more than makes up for it with how many different quality features you get with it.

While all three will work if your goal is to watch the Golden Globe Awards online from anywhere in the world, our favorite is NordVPN because it is fast, secure, and easy to use. We also like ExpressVPN because of its top-tier privacy and security options. CyberGhost was our favorite budget option.
