NordVPN’s new file encryption software, announced back in May, is finally out and available for securing files stored both on users’ devices or on cloud hosting services like Dropbox.

The service features both end-to-end encryption and zero-knowledge privacy for file storage. “Your data is not our business. Our encryption system is designed in such a way that we can’t see your file content under any circumstances,” says Ruby Gonzalez, Head of Communications at NordVPN.

With NordLocker, those without a master password or permissions to access your files will only see unreadable, folder-like “lockers” that will protect your sensitive data with advanced military-grade encryption techniques that include AES256, Argon2, and ECC ciphers.

How NordLocker works

According to Ruby Gonzalez, NordLocker’s mission is “to combine the best usability practices with the highest encryption standards. NordLocker is not cloud storage. Think of it as middleware that adds a security layer to your data. It never stores your files anywhere. Instead, it lets you keep them wherever you’re used to, only securely.

To secure your files with NordLocker, you’ll simply have to drag-and-drop them into your chosen locker or add them from within the locker folder with a click of a button. Once there, the files can only be accessed by entering the master password. The encrypted lockers themselves can be uploaded to the cloud or shared by email, file transfer services, messaging apps, etc.

Needless to say, the recipient of your encrypted locker will have to have NordLocker installed in order to decrypt them. So far, NordLocker is available on Windows and macOS, with both free and paid versions on offer.

So, to recap, here’s what NordVPN’s new file encryption service has to offer:

  • One-click encryption
  • Master password protection
  • Confidential cross-platform sharing
  • Zero-knowledge architecture
  • Powerful encryption (AES256, ECC, Argon2)
  • File protection on devices and in cloud storage services
  • Windows and macOS support
  • Free (5GB storage limit) and Premium (from 2.99/month) plans

At a glance, NordLocker’s feature package looks quite impressive. Some of our favorites here have to be zero-knowledge privacy, one-click encryption, and cloud storage service support. All in all, we’re definitely excited to give NordLocker a test drive.
